Classic ryokan experience
We were introduced to this place by a local friend. The experience started with a unique way of getting to the island - private taxi boat which came within 10mins of us calling the front desk (our arrival was delayed a little due to immigration). So started off on a good note. The hotel staff (and even the owner) were so hospitable the moment we entered that we didnt feel tired anymore after our long 12hr journey from Singapore. As it was close to dinner, the lady-boss then directed us right away to the fish market where we could choose what we wanted to have for dinner right out from the tank! As the fugu (blowfish) came highly recommended, the decisions were quick! Although of course we did select some other shellfish for the hotpot and fish for the sashimi. After a quick settle into our room (which comfortably could sleep 6 for our party of 5), we went back to the dining room and were not disappointed. Servings were sufficient and service was warm and personal. While the staffs fluency with English was not as desired, service was nevertheless efficient and always polite, as ever. The fugu course (our first) was to die for (sorry - I know - bad pun ) and while we started apprehensive, was a totally great choice. The sashimi was of course fresh and delicious. Nothing less than par for the course for a ryokan right next to the sea. When we got back to our rooms, the turn down service was already done and we had a great nites rest on our futon beds. One hint - leave the curtains open before retiring - the morning view of the bay is AMAZING and totally worth getting up at the crack of dawn to set up the time lapse camera . The onsen was small and the thin wall meant that chatter from the other gender drifted over and made what was supposed to be quiet and reflective time a little of a let down. Nevertheless it was an awesome experience for the family, especially since it was my kid's first time. A little out of the way but definitely something to try.
