  Fantastic

  The most wonderful hospitality I have ever experienced. The staff have limited English but went out of their way to help with information, transport and even booking us a Ryokan in Kyoto our next stay. The breakfast and dinners were sensational. The onsen's were brilliant, indoor and outdoor with great views over the sea. Very very clean and comfortable. Definitely highly recommended.

  Luxurious Stay and sure would like to stay again!

  Location: This Ryokan is far away from downtown, it is adjacent to the Sea of Japan, so you can enjoy a very beautiful sunset if the weather is fine. Room: I stayed at "Hakuin", the room is spacious, luxurious and comfortable, but expensive. They have no non-smoking room for any basic room types, so you need to upgrade to "Hakuin" or room type above so as to ensure a smoking free environment. Dinner & Breakfast: the food is so fresh, delicious & fabulous! We chose a 2 days stay plan. So we could enjoy different food respectively. The first evening was so fabulous! We cried out joyfully and enjoyed the meal so much. But the second evening was a bit disappointed once if you had had the first evening experience. Staff: very nice. The person serves your room in the evening will leave a note for you on your breakfast table the next morning. It is very warm and touching. I think the place is worth to stay 2 nights. One night is too hurry. But it is a bit too much for 2 days: two grand dinners and two grand breakfasts!

  Taste of Japan Sea

  This is my first experience to stay at Japanese Ryokan with such a beautiful sea view. the whole experience was awesome with nice room, onsen and dinner...and end with great breakfast. Although most staff do not speak English, except for Odagahi San who speaks some English, it did not ruin the experience. Staff are always polite with smile. Will definitely visit Sumihei again with friends or families during the winter season to taste their famous crab meal. Location: I will say the Ryokan is located in the middle of the nowhere. So it will be perfect if you are driving during your trip. If not, Sumihei also offers scheduled shuttle to/from Amino train station. (it seems to me that it offers more schedules than those listed in the japanese booking websites. Do check with Sumihei with more details.) Alternatively, there is local bus running from Amino Station to Sumihei. The nearest bus stop (Nakahama) is about 5 -8 mins walk to Sumihei. (however, it is not that frequent..about 30 mins to 1 hour each) and is about 20-30 mins traffic time from Amino station. I personally took bus from Ine and made an interchange at a bus terminal....which took me 1.5 hours ...What a long bus ride! Room: Since I am travelling solo, so I can only book the smallest type of room (same rule applies for many Ryokans). The room is still big enough for 1 to 2 persons with a nice balcony and a massage chair next to it (so that you can enjoy the seaview while relaxing yourself), and separate toilet but no bathroom (we are supposed to take bath in the public one). Despite the long history of Sumihei (over 100 years), everything is refurbished and in good condition. The property also has two/three standalone "luxury" quarters with private onsens....which look exquisite (love to try it some day). Onsen: Since Sumihei is "boutique" style Ryokan with 16 rooms/suites, there are only two onsens/public baths in the property. They swap for use between women and men at mid-night. Both outdoor onsens are small but with nice views. You really feel peaceful during that 10 mins. Meal: My dinner was served in a "private" room in the restaurant. Every dish tastes yummy. All seafood were fresh.However, I feel like my dinner set is lacking some meat to make it superb. Breakfast was served in the same place of dinner. The set included many small dishes. They taste so great and perfect for a new day. Service: Despite the English barrier, all the staff are sincere with smiles. I did change my shuttle bus (to Amino Station) and breakfast time once...and they were happy to change it for me. I do suggest you to check-in early to enjoy the environment and tranquility in Sumihei.

  relax place to stay and good food to enjoy (purposely for the seasonal crab)

  hotel is not big with very limited staff. they have a lounge, library with some free snack (sweet potato, oden) to serve. drinks and ice cream are charged but you either can drop in the cash in box or sign a note for billing. it is a very good trust service and you can enjoy without disturbing by others. those girls are very tough and they can bring in your luggage before you go inside your room. super. room is nice with balcony. can enjoy the seaview there too. we booked the private onsen but the inside is a bit normal. suppose there is a cleaning time before next use. when we go inside the one, there is baby diapers not cleared. feeling is a bit not good. they served us the dinner with specially booked seasonal crab. it is fresh and nice. however, this wouldn't surprise us as we try another type of crab somewhere else before we come on the same trip so make this without surprise to us. compare the stay plan package charged, this one is a bit over priced. i still recommend this place to try with their environment and service with your own affordable budget. the next day we checked out, they will provide a warm snack for you to eat on the way. very warm and thoughful service.
