Very comfortable hotelI have stayed twice in the Kempinski Hotel in Shenyang. I have enjoyed both times. This time my room was very spacious and had every type of amenity that one could imagine. The view was also lovely. The hotel has a very good breakfast, a nice pool, gym, steam room and bar with its own Paulaner brewery. The bar also has nice live music on some nights. My only issue is that it is difficult to obtain wine. The foyer bar will only sell wine by the bottle and it is not on the main bar menu. Also the mini bar does not contain wine. That is the only problem I have found. Otherwise it is great and it is my preference hotel in Shenyang. I have tried others but I would prefer to stay here.

Torn between super room and (some) badly trained staff with (mostly) great attitudesSpent 9 days starting beginning of 2020 Spring Festival which coincided with the first tough days of the Corona Virus period. The hotel had an extremely low occupancy and all restaurants were closed, except for breakast. The first two days a very good breakfast buffet was offered in the restaurant both Chinese and Western palates (and eyes) were made very happy! But as of the third day, in compliance with government instructions, breakfast was available only by room service. There were no problems in combining breakfast for a total of 4 adults & 1 child in the larger of two rooms. Every individual detail requested was fully met in top quality and generous amounts. We felt this was quite impressive and deserves special positive mention! All was served on a huge roll-in trolley with two shelves and served on a roll-in spacious dining table. Extra chairs had been made available, every desire was met. Amazing!!! On the downside of this northern China example of a top 5-star global hotel chain is the extremely low bandwidth available for communication. For the author, needing to communicate heavily even during this trip, it was a nightmare. Receptionists and the head of the hotel IT himself tried their best a few times but only extremely little improvement was noticeable. Certain times of the day seemed better than others on a very low level. De-activating VPN (advisable for a Westerner traveling in China!) helped hardly at all. By the judgment of a non-IT specialist, but traveling power user for decades in 5-star properties on six continents, the problem is a hardware one. The Chinese owners just have not bothered to update equipment in this 14-year old property to meet 2020 necessities. When this view was expressed to staff, the ones in the know did not object and remained silent. It was unfortunate having to complain knowing these people were simply doing their best with what was available. To the travelers extreme frustration, no middle or senior managers, such as an executive assistant manager or even the general manager (all Chinese) could be moved to respond to eMails, let alone show up in the hotel. TGhis had nothing to do with the Corona Virus but with the Spring Festival. For some reason, rates charged did not reflect this inferior demonstration of responsibility at all! Just for this, the Shenyang Kempinski is a disgrace to the brands name and reputation! Since the traveler happens to be based in the same city as the chains global head office in Europe it is considered to pay them a visit. Nine days of this attitude from top levels is intolerable! Lower staff levels all showed great attitudes and commanded respect for how they tried to cover for the higher-ups. A little more staff training in the lower ranks could help but all-in-all, the rest was fine. Subjective observation in closing: This hotel has the best mattresses and pillows I have ever encountered in any hotel. Sleep was heaven: Silent rooms and perfect bedding! And a final question: With the hotel almost completely empty and two rooms booked, why could the head traveler not be granted a room upgrade? Most chains would have done this.

Not up to Kempinski standards - avoidThe hotel rooms as well as bathrooms are small, bordering on tiny, with old fixtures. The elevators are surprisingly small as well. The parking lot of a bumpy, unpaved dirt patch that turns into a muddy mess in rain. Room service stops completely at night. Service is spotty at best. There are some great Kempinski hotels in China but this sadly is not one of them and thus deserves to be avoided.
