Homey, secluded cabins for business or pleasure travel in Central Louisiana. My wife and I visit relatives in Boyce at least once a year. For the past five years, we have stayed at Susan's Cottages. They are about 10 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from Alexandria. The lodging is always a highlight of a visit, and a sanctuary on stressful visits. There are two stand alone units, and a duplex, with rooms separated by a breezeway. Each room is different and tastefully decorated with homey touches. The family managers live across the road, a perfect location for service and privacy. The breakfast is a variety of hot and cold foods to make on the kitchenette. No hassles with dressing to go to a breakfast room or fussing with room service. If you are in Alexandria for business you cannot go wrong with Susan's. I would not call Alexandria a tourist destination, but it has a a great zoo, boat tours on the Red River and Kent Plantation. About 20 miles North, Cane River National Historic Trail (www.nps.gov/crha/) starts and continues another 50 miles to Nachitoches. The trail is a string of plantations and historic sites dating back to Colonial times. Nachitoches IS a fine tourist destination.

Secluded, quiet, restful! We booked Susan's Cottages for a three day conference in Alexandria. It is about 20 minutes outside of town but we knew that ahead of time. We stayed in the Sweetheart room in the double cottage, separated by a breezeway, hallway. No one was staying in the other room so we sure never heard or saw another breathing soul while we were there. Upon entering the cottage we were pretty pleased with the layout. Unfortunately the bathroom had not been cleaned. There was urine on the toilet and soap all over the sink. No hand towels and only one washcloth with the towels. Pretty sure the floor hadn't been swept or mopped either. I always carry Clorox wipes with me so I went to work on the bathroom but finally decided I would call about the towels and Susan answered the phone. I very politely mentioned the bathroom had not been cleaned, figuring she paid someone else to do that and would want to know. She apologized and said she would send over the towels. In less than ten minutes her son arrived at the door with the towels and also had cleaning supplies to clean the bathroom. We appreciated that and we did not make a scene. I do think the entire cottage needed a good cleaning, baseboards and under the bed were pretty dirty. The bed was clean and the furniture is very nice. Susan has put a lot of extra touches in the room, plenty of snacks and breakfast items. There were Cokes and Sprites, juice and milk in the fridge. There is a toaster oven, microwave, coffee pot (it needed a cleaning for sure, I bring my own!) There were complimentary mints as well. Nice little extras showing she had tried to think of the little things. The only frustration we had is that we had no instructions as to what to do as far as checking in or out. When we went to leave there was no one home so we couldn't get a receipt. We just left the key in the holder at their door. We never received an email when we registered with instructions or welcomes, etc. That would have been helpful too. Also, there is no internet. One thing I forgot to check. Oops! Overall, it is a nice little place to stay. Great back porch with a view of the river with some beautiful wild life around. If you don't mind the drive out of town it is a great get-away and much better than a hotel. With a little more attention to detail it would be a great place.

Be Sure to Call and Personally Confirm Your ReservationWe made reservations for a two-night stay using the website for Susan's Cottages and received an email confirming and accepting our reservation. When making the reservation through the website, we selected the 3pm-4pm window for our arrival. The confirmation email said to call if special arrangements were needed. As we did not need special arrangements, we did not call. When we were about 20 minutes from arriving, and comfortably within the window we had selected, we called the number provided to let them know we would be arriving shortly. No one answered and there was no way to leave a voicemail. We stopped by the main office and although the lights appeared to be on, no one answered the door when we rang the bell. We tried calling several more times to no avail. We tried texting the number provided but received a message back saying that text messages were not accepted (it was a landline). Disappointed and starting to feel very nervous about our two-night stay, we decided to get a bite to eat and hope that someone would call us back. While we were eating, someone texted with a message that said "I can't help you now call me later." I responded and said that we had made a reservation for that night and were supposed to check in between 3 and 4 pm. About 10 minutes later I received a call from Susan who said that she did not get our reservation and that the room we had reserved was not available. I told her that we had received an email confirming our reservation. She offered us the Gardener's Cottage, which would have been an upgrade, at no additional cost. We accepted and she said that she would need 30 minutes to get the room ready. When we were on our way back to the Cottages, I received a text from Susan informing me that the Magnolia Room- which was not the room we had reserved and which was not an upgrade - was ready for us and that she would be there for ten more minutes. When we arrived at the office and asked why we weren't being put in the Gardener's cottage as promised, she explained that the cottage was also not ready and that the Magnolia Room was the only room available. She acknowledged that she had found our reservation "under a stack of papers." When we expressed our frustration with the situation, she essentially told us that there was nothing to be done about it now but that she would refund our money and that we could stay somewhere else. As we had selected the Cottages for their proximity to the Kincaid Recreation Center, and as it was 5pm on a Sunday, we were not excited about the possibility. We decided to check out the room and were satisfied. Overall, once we got checked in, the room was comfortable and fairly quiet. There is some noise from the traffic and the cottage creaks a bit. The room was clean and comfortable and the jacuzzi tub was wonderful. The bed was too firm for my taste but comfortable enough. There were snacks and frozen breakfast sandwiches provided, which could have been better. On the first day there was coffee. We used the coffee provided (not much was provided) to make one pot of coffee and the grinds were not replenished when someone came in to clean the room after the first night. Overall, it was a pleasant stay. The check in experience was very frustrating and stressful. After driving nearly four hours, it was an unpleasant experience to be completely unable to check in to a room that had been reserved and paid for and to have no way to contact the owner. Lots of room for improvement on that front.

Peaceful Comfortable Get-Away!! Great Place to RelaxThis place was super clean and stocked with all types of goodies. The kitchenette had more breakfast items than we could eat..The beds are comfy. Bathrooms are clean and stocked. Parking was right outside our room, so there were no long walks lugging luggage. We had a blast.

Amazing........absolutely beautiful!!Susan's Cottages gave me such a wonderful experience, one like no other. The owner and family were such a joy! The cottage was absolutely beautiful. The view from the balcony was breathtaking! The beds are so comfortable and the jacuzzi tub was amazing! The rooms come fully stocked with all of your complimentary items so everything is already there and waiting for you. It is just an all-around wonderful experience. They even come with little kitchenettes. I would recommend staying here to anyone anytime. In my personal option, no one would ever regret this choice for a getaway!
