    The Aparthotel with hospitality

Stella Hotel is such a warm place with hospitality. We stayed there for 11 night and really enjoyed our stay. I was going to give the worst rating just because the worst receptionist called Joy who is racist and have no idea about customer service. Upon our arrival we found out that there was no key for security box and one of the aircon was not working therefore asked her for support. She basically treated us like noise and did not make any action. We had very hot evening without aircon and could not sleep. Next morning we asked other very helpful Greek receptionist who could sort issue out in 1/2 hour. I am very happy to hear that this racist person left this beautiful place and now all hard working people on site should deserve the best rating.

    Friendly staff

Set back from the main road with a nice sized pool and close to many of the excellent restaurants and bars. My room was clean spacious with two twin beds in the main bedroom and two singles in the lounge ideal for kids. The kitchen/lounge was well laid out for a self catering holiday although I never used it. The food was good and the staff were really friendly. Lindos is a short taxi ride away costing around 8 euros each way and well worth a visit. Due to the situation with covid the hotel wasn't busy and seemed to be very laid back and they had put in place all the precautions needed which was very reassuring and didn't spoil the holiday at all.

    Great Location

The best thing about the Stella Hotel is the location to the resort centre with some great restaurants and friendly bars and it's only a 10-15 min walk to the fabulous Lee Beach. The apartments are very dated and the facilities are not really good enough to self cater so don't expect to be doing much cooking when you are away. We just made use of the fridge for cold drinks. There were hundreds of ants in the apartment. In the kitchen, bathroom, balcony and even in the beds but it seems this is a problem everywhere. We got used to sharing! In my opinion the cleaning standards were not great, especially in the current Covid situation. The communal areas and pool were quite dirty and some litter, spillages (ice cream) were still there days later. We should have maybe informed the management but we tended to avoid those areas or go elsewhere - like the beach. Some large groups made the pool area quite rowdy and whilst we expect people to enjoy their holiday it would have also been nice for them to have respect for other guests. The on-site supermarket was very poorly stocked and the fridges were not chilled enough to keep drinks cold so we used the other 2 nearby ones instead. But I suppose as always you get what you pay for.

    Poor cleanliness

We stayed in a one bedroomed apartment at the Stella Aparthotel, Pefkos with our two children for one week in October 2020. The hotel is in a good, central location and our apartment was spacious. The staff were very friendly. Sadly, we struggled with the lack of cleanliness both within our apartment and at breakfast. The bathroom was dirty with stray hairs, soap scum and generally needed maintenance (I've attached some pictures). To be fair to the hotel management, we were moved rooms after we logged our complaint with Jet2 and our second room (block 5) was an improvement on our original one (block one). However, it took several complaints (both directly with hotel staff and with Jet2) to get the breakfast table and highchair cleaned to an acceptable standard. Even after the highchair tray had been cleaned by staff, the dirt coming off it onto an antibacterial wipe I used was pretty shocking (I've attached images so you can see what I mean). It was disconcerting given our expectation that hygiene would be even more of a priority given the impact of Covid-19. Breakfast was okay - the pastries were hard and, in particular, the croissants seemed stale. There's an on-site bakery apparently, so not sure the reason for hard croissants. Finally, we couldn't get hot water at any time of the day we tried. In fairness to the hotel, we didn't mention this because we were kind of sick of complaining and cold water was not a big deal compared to the issue of cleanliness. Hopefully with some general maintenance and some improvements in cleaning protocol this place will improve for next season?

    A welcome break from COVID

***Review is based on a trip in late Sept 2020 and the restrictions at that particular time*** Location - The Stella is very conveniently located in the centre of the resort. Its also right by the taxi rank. Its a short walk downhill to the main Lee beach, and there are bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Rooms style/facilities/location on site do vary according to the type you pick. We selected the standard room with kitchenette and were fully aware that they were away from the main block, this is highlighted on the Stella website. That block was not originally part of the Stella complex, and only became part of Stella when a neighbouring complex sold it to the Stella group. As a consequence, its furthest from the pool & reception and has older décor, and all rooms in that block are accessed by at least one flight of stairs none are at ground level. Those with mobility issues may wish to bear this in mind if considering these rooms. As mentioned, they are older in style but the furniture was sturdy and we were pleased that our 2 studios were not only next to each other, but shared a large sea view balcony, each half with its own table, chairs and collapsible clothes airer. Ideal for a family group with grown up children, or two couples travelling together who appreciate their own space but still want a shared social area. I suspect Stellas team may deliberately put such travelling groups in these rooms, knowing that the shared balcony wont appeal to couples who wont want to share a balcony with strangers. As with any studio do check crockery is clean before using it. We found some clearly unwashed glasses in the cupboard. There was a microwave, hob, fridge with icebox, and kettle available on request at reception. In-rooms safe & aircon free for those booking direct with stella. Aircon worked very well, safe was a reasonable size. The in-room hairdryer, although described by Stella as basic was perfectly fine. Value for money we found the hotel excellent value for money, but we went on in late September when prices were low. This perception may vary according to what you pay for your room I can appreciate someone paying high season prices may have a different perception. Cleaning only done twice per week due to covid, in line with many hotels in Greece. Bed linens and towels were decent quality and clean. Bins emptied every day except Sunday. Reception area/reception team - replied to our emails prior to arrival, kindly gave us the view wed requested, and willingly exchanged our aircon remote which was faulty. Leaking fridge in studio was quickly dealt with. Helped me get hold of some superglue quickly to fix my broken glasses. A tip - Take a look at the photos by the reception entrance amazing aerial shots showing the expansion of the Stella complex over the years. I had a slight accident on site. Stellas team ensured I had access to medical attention, requested that I fill in an accident form to ensure the incident was properly recorded, and followed up with me on the remaining days of my stay to ensure I was comfortable. Breakfast A buffet service served on a terrace with partial sea view as well as an indoor area. Bacon and sausages available, along with mushrooms, eggs and beans. Also cereals, croissants, pain au chocolat, a couple of cakes, fruit and ham and cheese. Tea, coffee and orange juice. Helpful, willing staff, including the lovely Dimitri. Pool & bar The pool at Stella, although not massive, is big enough, and seems very clean. Theres a pretty little bridge and water feature into the kiddies paddling pool. Staff clean and tidy the area at the end of the day. The pool area had plenty of sun loungers and parasols laid out in line with social distancing. Thankfully Stella has a decent sized terrace which makes social distancing much easier than some of the other hotels in resort which have more cramped pool areas. The pool bar also had tables & chairs in line with social distancing requirements and signs asking you not to move them. A social distanced queue was in place for the bar not that we ever saw a queue! Apparently, Stella has future plans for a second pool at the far end of the complex so those staying in the current standard room with kitchenette may one day not have to venture over to the main pool area. Other facilities - A supermarket and car hire office are part of the complex also owned by Stellas family. Other Covid observations. We felt safe at the Stella and in resort. At the time of our journey, masks were only required by customers in shops and museums, so we could roam the hotel, bars, restaurants, streets, beach and archeological sites without masks. At the stella itself, they had screens in reception, staff in masks, a covid form to complete on arrival, hand sanitiser available in reception, at the pool area, bar, restaurant and at multiple points around the complex. There were floor markings in the breakfast area to enable socially distanced queuing, and the buffet foods were protected with screens and served to you by staff with masks and gloves just ask for what youd like. Tables and chairs on the restaurant terrace were at a comfortable distance. Around the resort, staff in bars and restaurants had visors or masks and all complied with the Midnight curfew. At most bars and restaurants, tables and chairs were at a comfortable distance. If you came across a lively establishment where social distancing seemed a little harder, there were plenty of other places to pick from where you would feel more comfortable. Of course, the fact that so many of the tables and chairs are outside on pretty terraces due to the clement Greek weather makes it so much easier to feel comfortable than inside a UK pub. The vast majority of bars and restaurants were open. A couple of bars and restaurants had chosen to stay shut all season but several of those were attached to/owned by the big hotels such as Pefkos Beach Hotel and the Island Blu complex which had chosen not to open this year. COVID has had a mixed impact on Rhodes Town for us, the changes were favourable easier parking, less tourists, no cruise liner crowds, free entry to the Palace of the Grand Masters (usually 9 euros) and Carte DOr icecream for 1E/Scoop along the harbourfront. A few restaurants and bars had lowered their prices to encourage trade. In summary, Stella Hotel, Pefkos and Rhodes as a whole gave us a much-needed break from the constant worry of COVID. We didnt forget about it completely, but we felt so much safer being able to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle to the fullest offered by the Greek sunshine, and the ever-welcoming Greeks whose hospitality remains evident, even behind a visor. We wish Stella and her team well, and we hope they are able to have a better, fuller season in 2021.
