Very disappointed in this over priced dirty facility

OK, We were thinking that staying at the famous State Game Lodge in Custer state park was going to be a highlight on our trip. Wrong! We were in the motel like wings to the lodge, perhaps the historic part is better. The room was tiny, like it was built for one full bed but now has two queen and no room to hardly turn around in. It was not clean. The furniture and lighting fixtures had thick dust on them. The rug was dirty, the corners had not been cleaned the rest of the rug was barely vacuumed. The room was dark, perhaps hoping we wouldn't notice the dirt? The edge of the bedside table was sticky. One pillow smelled like someone elses purfume. The bathroom floor and shelf in the shower were dirty and the heat register in the bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned or even dusted for years. And the best part - BUGS! Funny bugs that I have never seen before, about an inch long with wings, but they didn't fly. They were on the floor and one was even seen crawling up the side of the mattress! I did not get a picture of the bugs, unfortunately. I did get pictures of other things but need to access my phone for them, not this computer. There was a porch below us where people congregated talking loud into the night and early the next morning, too. The staff did not seem to be able to answer even basic questions. The young man who took our dinner reservation that I made as the paperwork given to us at check in said to, did not seem to understand what a reservation was and when I asked where the restaurant was, he could not tell me. It ended up being behind the lobby, how hard is that? When you arrive, there is no sign to tell you where to check in. We had to ask passer by people. We parked down out front and walked up the the pretty but horribly steep front steps, no railing at all and the rock wall was too low to be of any help. When we checked in I asked if we had to drag our bags up those nasty steps and was told, "Oh, no, you can drive around up to the parking lot in the back and come in right over there". Hello, why wasn't there a sign to tell people that, because then we had to navigate back down those trecherous stairs to the car, on our old arthritic knees. So we found our room which was right next to the upper parking lot, but down a steep grassy slope, and so was the restaurant we discovered. Then we find the WIFI did not work in the rooms and we were told we would have to bring our computer to the lobby to use it. Come on, this is 2020 and we were not very far from the lobby but we were in a separate building. I could go on and on. Don't even get me started on how rudely we were treated at the general store down the road! I am not a fusing person, I have never written a bad review like this but I have never needed to. All this for a room that was nearly 3X's the cost of normal hotels. This was the dirtiest place we stayed in during ourtrip, when during Covid times we espected sparkling clean. The hillside that the place is on is pretty - there I said something positive. These questions below seem a little silly when basic cleanliness was not provided.

    Beautiful location

This was the only lodge/hotel In Custer State Park that was open during the second weekend In Oct. I booked a room in the hotel wing, adjacent to the lodge. The room itself was basically adequate, However it was not clean, with a filthy filter in the wall heater that caused my allergies to flare up. The bag the dryer was in was disgusting and the tub had mold. The TV was small and the reception poor. And NO WIFI in the room, which is unbelievable in this day and age! I paid over $200 per night for the room and I realize some of that was the location because Custer State Park is beautiful and staying in the middle of it is worth something. However, they need to step up their game a lot! The lodge itself has been renovated since I last was there. It is remarkable on the outside, but the inside has been pretty much gutted and the historic ambiance is gone. I did eat in the restaurant and it was ok. All of the front line employees wore masks, which I was happy to see. If given the choice I probably would not stay there again, or perhaps book one of their cabins which run $250+ per night.

I liked the historic building, location, atmosphere; but the bed had uncleaned sheets.

I was at first very happy with the room, location, size, view. However, I noticed a mildew looking ring around the edge of the toilet at the water's edge. Hum. Maybe no one had stayed for a while because of covid ... towels seemed fresh. However, later, when I pulled back the covers of the bed, it was very apparent someone had slept there and the sheets had not been changed, but the bed had been neatly made up (I will spare the yucky details!). The lady at the front desk did not seem as if she liked being bothered but disappeared to get sheets SO I COULD CHANGE THEM myself (because of covid). After waiting a long time, I asked another employee if there was a manager around ... the manager was in an office right behind the check-in desk. He negotiated to switch me to the other newer building, which was a 'clean' solution. Major hassle having to carry things in and out of car 2x. Considering price, I am more than outraged at the poor cleanliness standards. The only reason I do not give it 1 is that the restaurant food was good and the manager did provide another room where I could move. I have no idea why the person at the front desk did not consult the manager who was right nearby and why she thought it OK for me to change my own sheets???

2 night stay family of 4 in the historic Lodge

We had an enjoyable stay for 2 nights in the Calvin Coolidge room in the main lodge. Rooms were historic but comfortable. Kids slept in the attached room on a pull out sofa bed that was adequate. We enjoyed the evenings on the front porch with a couple of drinks at the end of each day. We ate breakfast each morning at the restaurant, and it was really good. The location of the lodge was very convenient for our activities (buffalo tour picked up right there), and visits to Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Needles Eye Tunnel, among others. The only issue we had is there was a heating problem in our room, and the heater would not turn off during a warm June day. They had to move us to another room the 2nd night because they could not fix the problem.

    Hornets and Stink Bugs

We stayed in the State Game Lodge hotel room in mid Oct. 2 adults accompanied by 11 friends to our surprise (aka....6 hornets and 5 stink bugs). First impression of the hotel room..."was this room cleaned?" A resounding "nope!" was the answer to that question shortly after discovering a dead fly left on the floor and smashed insect on the wall. Honestly, that didn't bother me, though. Nor did the stink bugs as much. I mean, I can deal some some beetles here and there, but I will say smashing 5 of them started to get annoying. I can only tolerate so much "crunch" sounds. Ok, the main issue was we were constantly fending off hornets. It was like every hour..."oh there's another one." Our conversation topics were soon prefaced with "hey honey, can you please get this hornet? "Sure, babe!" The lady at the front desk offered to spray wasp killer in our room (um, no thanks. If I survived the night from a family of hornets, surely fumigating our small hotel room with insecticide and other poisonous chemicals would sure do us in. Eventually, they made right and moved us to Creekside Lodge (lovely place), but State Game Lodge hotel rooms? Pass.
