Average at best. The room was not entirely clean with clothing left from a previous guest. The pictures of the rooms are much different than advertised along with the distance from West Lake. It is maybe a 20 minute-plus walk. Staying in the family room, the showers are glass and are exposed. With the mirror, you can be seen from the inside while another is in bed. If this is a family trip or trip with friends, you may want to consider staying in this type of room. Privacy in the bathroom is a major flaw. Overall, the hotel is average at best. There are much nicer and reasonably-priced hotels closer to the lake.

Best LocationI picked St. Rich Hotel because the location, it's very close to Xihu Lake and city centre. The lake is in 10-minute walking-distance. But the room was just old and so-so, nothing special. If you want to stay for 1 night it's still fine, but it's not comfy for a long period stay.

Staff was irresponsible when the hotel was on fire[The hotel was on fire, but there was no broadcast, fire alarm or any notice. All the hotel staff left to the lobby but didn't alarm the guests.] Early in the morning we were half awake and heard the constant wailing of fire engine sirens. We opened the window to check the situation outside. The fire trucks were actually right under our building. Looking down from the 15F, we saw the fire fighters pulling the pipes. We opened the door to check, and the hallway was filled with the smoke of a chemical smell. Fortunately the smoke was not that thick yet, but it did not look good. We should better leave as soon as possible. There was no broadcast, fire alarm or any notice. The phone did not work either when we tried to reach the hotel staff to understand where the fire occured. Sure enough many things cannot be trusted in China. This hotel is said to be four-star on their website and the booking.com. There was an emergency exit right next to the room, yet the stair was full of smoke. We turned to another exit. In the middle of the hallway, there was a cleaning cart left, but we saw nowhere the staff. I shouted, Is any body here? All of a sudden, a bleary-eyed and rumpled lady in pajama, just like me, opened a door. The hotel is on fire, I said. She watched the smoke and got totally awake. We found an exit without smoke, and walked all the way down with other guests, including children and brave moms. Many people had gathered in the lobby. Most of them did nothing but standing, except for one guy shouting to the staff. There were at that time two employees at the counter. One was sitting in a daze, and the other was still busy checking in for other new guests. From time to time, there were even people arriving the lobby by elevators. Once we arrived the lobby, we went directly to the staff at the counter and urged them to inform other guests. They just nodded perfunctorily. They gave no information about the situation at all. After couple hours we came back to inquire about the fire. With the mentality of (trying first to make mistakes sound less serious and then to reduce it to nothing at all), they responded it was just some electrical fire at the back of the 1F, nothing serious. You may return to your room. We returned to our floor, still covered with a terrible smell of burning. In case of something serious, I am not sure if they would tell the truth and would have any idea in which floor there are still people. Terrible experience.

Turnaround in west lake cityThe room is spacious with windows, and all the devices works. The staff were helpful especially the tour desk. It is within 15 mins walk to West Lake either along Pinghai and Jiefang Road. A lot of the old city such as Hefang Road is within walking distance of maybe 20 to 30 mins. There are also quite a few restaurants close by such as Pinghai 53, there is even some back lane eateries selling beancurd and fritters and dumplings and noodles. There is also a lot of buses along the 2 main roads but it gets a bit complicated to use them. The negative part was there was painting work at the main lobby when we check in, so we thought that was not the lobby. Also as it is beside a main road Zhong He Road, it can get a bit noisy. Also the airport bus will alight you at Zhongshan Hotel about 5 mins walk away at Pinghai Road. The wifi signal is a bit weak in the room. As compared to my last visit, I guess there is a big turnaround and its not that bad anymore.
