Black History Month - Civil Rights

Stopped on our way back from Florida...... this was my favorite part of our trip. Walked the route that was marched by Civil Rights Leaders March 1965 from Brown Chapel AME, the streets of downtown Selma and the Pettus Bridge. So powerful! The St. James Hotel - historic, newly remodeled and re-opened is beautiful! The staff was very friendly and helpful!! Restaurant was also really great! I would highly recommend staying at the St. James!!

    Fabulous Restaurant!

We wouldn't have known the restaurant was open if it had not been for our AIRBNB host! It was wonderful! Colin, the manager, & Jameria (?), Our server, we're professional, courteous, and took great care of us. So happy they are open!

    Brand New. Room for Improvement.

The St. James is a historical hotel that has been recently renovated. It has been open for a month (according to the friendly staff). We stayed there for one night on February 23, 2021. The lobby, dining room and bar area are compact, comfortable and thoughtfully decorated, all in keeping with the vibe of the hotel. Our room was the perfect size with a view of the Alabama River and the famous Pettus (sorry if I misspelled!) bridge. The bathroom was also a nice size and the lighting was really good. We had drinks at the bar (they were delicious, Hunter is a great bartender) and enjoyed dinner and breakfast which were good. What needs improvement here is outside lighting where you self-park your car at the curb. There are street lights on the sidewalk next to the hotel, but they weren't illuminated - it was very dark and felt dangerous. Eugene, a helpful employee, provided an escort to our car with his flashlight. Had Eugene not been there, my daughter and I would have walked in the dark to our car. Full disclosure: we did not report our concerns to management, although we did complete a survey provided by Hilton. This hotel has been painstakingly restored - it really is a gem, but until the lighting issue is addressed, I cannot recommend it, which I regret. If you are interested in staying here, I'd suggest that you call and ask the General Manager if the lighting issue has been addressed.
