Third visit to Kalamaki, first time to Sofia's, hopefully we will returnI have been to Kalamaki in 2004 staying at the Venus and 2018 staying at the Vanessa. I probably wouldn't have returned to Zante so soon even though I think the island and Kakamaki are fantastic, but this year being what it was (Covid-19 and the restrictions it imposed) timing, and pricing saw us return using a very keenly priced packaged holiday with Jet2, this being my first holiday with them. I was familiar with the location of the hotel from my last visit which was a factor in choosing Sofias over a package available at nearby Dollas. We booked just over three weeks prior to arrival and as I was travelling with my mother who had mobility issues I sent an email to the owners to request if possible a lower floor room where she could sit in private but still see what was going on and I received a quick positive response. We arrived on a Sunday evening and were met on the hotel steps from our transfer bus by one of two sisters who run the hotel. She quickly checked us in. My mother was given the perfect room as per my request. My partner did not like our original room at the far end of the complex and requested another which was quickly arranged without any fuss, I was grateful as I would not have heard the end of it all holiday. Our second room was ground floor and faced my mothers room across the garden and pool terrace. The studios themselves are typically Greek and basic, I find less is more so find this aspect appealing. We had a very small kitchenette with a combined two ring electric hob and sink unit. A couple of cupboards held cutlery and basic utensils, pots/pans, crockery and glassware. We had a small fridge with freezer compartment for keeping drinks cool. We did not cook at all, but you could probably make a fry-up and sandwiches if you need to. As is usually the case in Greece the bathroom is like one large shower cubicle with toilet and sink. Despite there being a shower tray in the corner it was hard to contain the water as there is no shower curtain or a hook to hand the shower head on. This I have found to be common in many similar small and friendly Greek establishments so it's not a slight on Sofias. Our bedroom had one double bed with two pillows each being available. There were ample assorted hangers in the wardrobe for storing clothes, but drawer space in the room is restricted to small items like underwear. We took the option to pay for air-conditioning which I knew was extra and prepared for the added expense. I do though recall the air-con at Vanessa two years ago was included and I class both complexes in the same category, but I suppose each run their complexes in their own way. We had a nice private patio bordering the garden area just behind the pool terrace which got the sun for early part of the day. The patio had the only table and chairs, so if you are self-catering you would need to dine outside, which am sure is fine unless for some reason the weather was unseasonably inclement. Wifi was free and could be accessed in both rooms we had without any connection issues. There were ample sunbeds for the guests and space to use them around the pool, there were also plenty of parasols. The pool itself is a good size and kept immaculately clean. A nice feature is there are steps down into the shallow end as opposed to a ladder which is great if you have any mobility problems. The deepest end is only 1.35m, so most adults can stand anywhere. There were a few lilo's and a giant inflatable unicorn which guests could use as well as balls. Sadly the unicorn disappeared after a few days after looking less than perky one day. There were no children at the hotel other than the owners little girl who was a delight. Children have a separate paddling pool. Ordinarily Sofias has their own on-site supermarket but given the late start to the season here in Zante it may have been a wise decision not to open and re-stock this year. Other independent supermarkets were open on the main road and old Kalamaki road. Jazzi's Kitchen and Bar is the name of the pool bar which is open morning til midnight serving a good range of breakfast, snacks, lunch and main meals until 17:15, after that it is purely a bar. We ate breakfast here every day at the poolside usually served by Jo (an ex-pat) who was always chatty and friendly. I would often entertain the other residents as I took off across the pool area with my breakfast plate trying to escape kamikaze wasps every morning. I am sure to some watching from afar they would wonder who the guy was who seemingly bust into spontaneous interpretive dance. The wasps would only appear at breakfast, I never had an issue any other time. I thought the value, variety and quality of food on offer from the pool bar was very good. I just didn't find the metal chairs very comfortable, but there were some lovely comfortable lounge chairs inside the bar. The bar played a mixed selection of music for all ages through the day and evening. It was always relaxing to sit around the public areas, try and grab the front table by the hotel steps for a great sundowner's spot as the sun goes down behind the mountains at the end of the Kalamaki strip and the strip lights come alive. Although the hotel is right on the Kalamaki main road it is located just out of the main drag of bars and restaurant's making it quiet all day except for traffic noise. Turn right out of the hotel and just around five minutes walk will get you to the main part of the action in Kalamaki. Turn left out of the hotel and then take the right at the junction will take you to old Kalamaki road for an alternative to the busier strip. I like this part. The beach can be found on this route in around 10-12 minutes walking. Overall it's a fantastic location and even for my mother who brought a rollator to help with walking, the the pavements and indeed most of the area are flat and navigable. She loved it here so much, she is very keen to return here. I would much rather pay to help a family running a business than a large faceless hotel run by a conglomerate, these guys work really hard all day and were constantly smiling. Being Greek/Australian they really had that friendly informal hospitality and is probably why the hotel is a massive favourite with a huge repeat guest following. It is just a shame the UK government imposed restrictions on those returning from Zante during our stay effectively halted the remaining season in its tracks and the hotel will close in the third week of September. We really hope to come back and support the hotel and locals of Zante soon. Thank you so much.
