Unfortunate experience in a beautiful corner of the world.

We finally decided to cancel our booking after a very unpleasant experience of the owner's interpretation of service. We instead stayed at an absolutely gorgeous B&B around the corner, whos breakfast blew us away.

BE PREPARED FOR A VERY RUDE WELCOME AT THE RESTAURANT OF THIS HOTEL.

We spent a week at the end of March - beginning of April , 2016 in the beautiful village of EPEN, Netherlands, from where we explored South Limburg, and visited a number of Restaurants for a meal, one of which was HOTEL RESTAURANT SLENAKER VALLEI, in Dorpsstratt, SLENAKEN. We entered the Hotel Restaurant Slenaker Vallei, and was met by a tall Dutch gentleman standing at the reception office . I politely asked him if the Restaurant was still open for meals. He spoke perfect English and pointed to the dining area within a conservatory lean-to, and abruptly said " it's in there ! ". I then asked him if there was a toilet which I could use, to which he sternly asked , " Where are you from ?"..and we told him " England ". He then said, " Do the Restaurants in England have toilets ? " I replied, " Yes".....to which he answered, " Well, we have toilets in our Restaurant also ", and pointed me in the direction of the toilets. I returned from the toilets and entered the Restaurant, and was handed a menu from which to choose a meal. We could not speak the Dutch language and so unable to understand the menu selection of food. I politely asked him if the restaurant did a meal of 'Snitzel' ?.....to which he abruptly replied, " This is not Germany. I can cook you a 'Snitzel ' but it will take a while for me to prepare it, as all our meals are freshly prepared and cooked. " Having regard to his rude and impolite manner of speaking, we could have left the restaurant, but other restaurants in SLENAKEN were quite full of customers, whilst HOTEL RESTAURANT SLENAKER VALLIE was empty, and not a single customer in view at the time of us entering. However, we were hungry and wanted to eat and so decided to stay for a meal. Having discouraged us from having a 'snitzel' meal, he then pointed to the burgers on the menu which he said were freshly prepared and cooked. We ordered a burger each with chips ( fries). As for a starter, he suggested a home made 'Lemon Grass' flavoured soup....and finally we asked for two coffees and a glass of water. There was a 27 minute waiting time for the starters 2 bowls of lemon grass flavoured soup which was of a generous sized serving. A further 20 minutes later we were served with a small meat burger with cheese topping and a very small portion of salad between fresh bread rolls, upon which there was a small cherry tomato on the top. It was far from a substantial meal and tasted no better than a cooked from frozen beef / ham burger one would buy from a burger stand/stall. Finally we had a cup of coffee, which was presented in a very small cup ( what I would describe as a 'dolls cup' affording just two small mouthfuls of coffee). The coffee was quite nice, but was very meagre in size. Likewise with the water, which was in a very small bottle of just 0.2 ltr size. The total cost of the two burgers, two bowls of soup, two dolls cups of coffee, and a very small bottle of water amounted to 49 euros or approx. £39.20 sterling ( at 1.25 euros = £1 at time of exchange rate). We considered the price to be very expensive for what we had, and the portions very small, and not so enjoyable as when we dined at the Brugske Restaurant and the Boswachter Restaurant, both of which were very nearby, but unfortunately were full of customers on this particular day. During our holiday we found both the Dutch and the Belgian people very friendly and pleasant to speak to. Unfortunately, the gentleman at the HOTEL RESTAURANT SLENAKER VALLEI we found to be very rude in his manner of approach, and speaking. This restaurant we would never again return to for a meal. We considered his facetious and bad manners in speaking to be a 'one off ' and he set a very poor example for the people of The Netherlands and bordering Belgium. In retrospect, and in my opinion, it was hence the reason why the other nearby restaurants were always full of customers, and their management and staff welcomed you with friendliness, whilst HOTEL RESTAURANT SLENAKER VALLEI was empty of customers on each occasion we passed through SLENAKEN. The reasons were obvious to be seen.

    Tossed out without an apology

We booked for two nights in this hotel through booking.com. At breakfast after our first night we were told to come to the reception to speak to the manager on a phoneline. He told us that booking.com had made a mistake, and we therefore had to move to another hotel. Just like that. He offered no compensation, whatsoever. The hotel we moved to was OK, but a chain hotel, like the ones I spend about 60 nights a year in. The room was rather dark, but big. It was a family room. It was almost impossible to read or stydy a map in the room, due to the lighting condition. The balkony looked like hadn't been used, nor cleaned the last decade, wich was a pity, since we had very nice weather. Minibar is not available, its only a fridge with some mineralwater in the hall. Our advise is to fin another hotel in this charming part of The Netherlands, there are plenty.

    Relaxing and friendly service

We stayed a weekend in this place. Arriving on Friday a little later but we had a warm Welcome. The food was good and the Régional wine was very tasteful. The room was nice and the bed comfortable. The village of Self is close to Maastricht which is a nice visit off course.

    Lunch

We decided to go for lunch here. Great service, excellent food and a nice and cosy interior. We really enjoyed our lunch and the hospitality. We will certainly go back and even book a room next time we are in Sleenaken.
