No we can't feed you! Hunger leaves a bitter taste.Theres a Chris de Burgh song that starts Theres nothing quite like an out of season town in the rain . This line kept playing round in my head as we tramped the streets of Shimoda looking for something anything that was open. Particularly at night. This was in late July. Maybe its different at other times of the year? I would recommend the Indian restaurant at the railway station. It was open but not every evening . The cable car is currently under repair July 2019. The buildings on the famous Perry Street were in general shut. The very few that were open closed mid afternoon. At this point we has spent 2 weeks traveling independently around Japan so it was not from lack of understanding that we couldnt find anywhere to eat or drink or anything to do. The boat trip around the bay is enjoyable- it lasts about 20 minutes. We chose Shimoda because it is one of the most accessible seaside resorts from Tokyo. We stayed 3 nights. 2 nights too many. The Shimoda Tokyu has a glorious location overlooking a pretty bay. On a nice day the setting is superb. However the indifference to guests arriving hungry left us with a bitter taste in our mouths.

Amazing viewsThis is the place for you if you want to relax and and soak in the beauty of nature. Hotel is placed at beautiful location, on top of a hill/cliff with spectacular view of the the blue sea. They have shuttle service to and from Izukyu-Shimoda train station and Hotel which runs at an interval of ~30mins, last one from station is at 5:30PM Rooms are quite big and spacious considering Japanese standards. Have beach facing and mountain facing rooms. I stayed in beach facing room on 5th floor with awesome view. Half of the staff speak good English and the other half try their best. They are very friendly and helpful always. Hotel is near to many of the attractions within Shimoda like Rope way, Floating Aquarium, Black pearl cruise etc. They have Travel Desk(concierge) who can help with itinerary. They have a big pool usually open during summer. There is a small but beautiful white sand beach(Nabeta) near by, you need to climb down series of steps to reach it. Their Buffet breakfast is superb, wide variety of food, Japanese and continental. Dinner menu is totally Japanese style and is quite expensive. They have separate spa/onsen for men and women.

Great location but very dated hotel and tiny roomThe staff at this hotel were welcoming and polite. Great views from the reception area. There is a shuttle into the town but we preferred to walk. The pool was closed when we stayed. Our room was very clean but it was extremely small with nowhere to put our luggage or to unpack our clothes. The room was dated and disappointing. The bed was pushed against the wall, so not very convenient for one of us. We ate in the restaurant one night. The meal was good but expensive (£166 for 2 people, 3 course and 1 bottle of wine). There was no bar at the hotel and the restaurant menu was limited. We very much enjoyed a meal and drinks at The Japanese Old House-a great little find and well worth a visit.

A Nice HotelWe booked a room with the ocean view. This was a great choice. In the morning we could see the sunrise and during the evening and night we could see the ships lights out in the ocean. The only downside at night was the bright lights from the Hotel cluttered up the view.

An ok experience. We are currently spending the weekend at Shimoda Tokyu hotel and our experience here has been a bit disappointing. Let me say that we are not picky guests, we just need food and fun, and that's why this hotel did not meet our expectations. Upon our check-in yesterday, we discovered that the hotel pool is closed. Their website said that the pool was open in September. We are in a beach area and still pretty warm, so it's upsetting that the only entertainment at this hotel is closed. Our room is a decent size ( Japanese standards) and it's very clean. The amenities are good and you have everything you need. Tv will only play the Japanese channel, but the wifi is fast. Hotel guests are quiet and discreet. The indoor and outdoor onsen facility ( separated genders) are pretty amazing and clean. We were very disappointed with the breakfast options as well. Not enough western food options, like I've seen on pictures. The only options today were a couple of fruits, juices, and 3 different kinds of pastries. I feel that they are cutting corners because its the end of the summer season. Also, If you dont make dinner reservations way in advance you wont be able to dine with them. Luckily, we drove here and were able to dine out in town. One thing that bothered me at this hotel is that there are no common areas to hang out indoors. Its raining and the only area available in the lounge, where you have to spend money on drinks or the restaurant. Overall, the hotel is nice and the staff is friendly and professional. They are always smiling, which makes you feel welcome.
