A Charming Inn with a Casual Cottage FeelI reserved two premium rooms at Sherwood Inn this past weekend in their Maplewood building. I wanted rooms with a good water view and a fireplace. I was taking my parents to Muskoka for the weekend. We were hoping to enjoy some fall colours and I was dying to have the opportunity to take a kayak or canoe out to explore Lake Joseph. I read other reviews and was a little worried that the place was going to be a little rough around the edges. Other visits to Port Carling, I had stayed at the JW Marriott, which I loved, but didnt love the food. I wanted to try something a little more cottagey that had a better reputation for good food. The Sherwood Inn did not disappoint me. I found the staff to be great and very friendlyespecially the dining room staff. I was happy with both my room (524) and my parents rooms (521) having a nice lake view and loved having a wood burning fireplace. (521 had the better water view, less obstructed by trees) The rooms also had Jacuzzi tubs. (Would have loved an outdoor hot tub somewhere on the property) The rooms were not pristine, but were very nice with king sized beds and a small fridge. I cannot comment on the rooms in the other buildings. The Maplewood is a separate building built up on a hill. The rooms have large balconies looking down at the water. The building does not have elevators. The resort has an older, charming, cottagey feel to it. I was also impressed that the resort is pet friendly, with the exception of the main lodge. The grounds of Sherwood Inn are beautiful and natural. Covered with tall pines with lots of paths. There are a few waterfront cabins you can rent. There is a tennis court and a beach area with canoes and kayaks. During this Covid time, you have to bring you own life jackets. There are also a couple of dock areas. The dining room is located in the main lodge. There is also a lovely deck area with patio heaters, outside the dining room. It was not warm enough to eat outside during our visit, but I imagine it would be really enjoyable during the warmer days. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food. We ate 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts. I would definitely book another stay at Sherwood Inn. I like its cottagey, casual feel, good food and the availability of kayaks, canoes and SUPS that you were free to use. I really enjoyed a morning kayak on the Saturday of my visit. I would definitely like to come back during warmer weather.

Autumn visitWe spent 3 days at this Muskoka area Inn during October. The colour of the maple leaves was awesome. Our room was in the Cedarwood Building by the lake with wonderful views. A cosy fireplace with two comfortable upholstered chairs and a lake view made for a pleasant afternoon. Great hiking trails nearby helped to work off the great meals offered in the package deal. A four course dinner from a long list on the menu gives everyone a wide choice, The beef tenderloin was awesome and the carrot cheesecake was rich and delicious. Social distancing was encouraged and masks for indoors in the main Inn were required. We felt quite safe.

DisappointedWe were looking for a romantic escape but regrettably the Sherwood Inn was not the place. We had a lakeside cabin for two nights - very cramped and showing its age. Definitely not worth the $200+ per night it cost. Unless you are going for nostalgic reasons I would give it a pass.

AvoidPros: 1. The grounds are great - peaceful and calm. 2. Staff do their best to help out with anything you need. 3. Tasty Breakfast. 4. Quick check in and check out. Cons: 1. Cottages are super dated. We were in Birchwood West. Avoid! 2. Cottage walls are too thin and you can hear people in the other half of the cottage talk and much more. 3. The shower area in the Birchwood Cottage is gross. Service Recovery: 1. We were upgraded to a 2 bed cottage right after I spoke to the General Manager for the remainder of our stay. The 2 bed cottages are dated but way better than what we were in initially. The bathrooms are cleaner. Wondering why we were upgraded? Keeping reading. 2. Breakfast charges were waived off - don't remember if this was for a day or two. 3. I was allowed to use the conference room for work calls, cause I could not take any calls in the cottage we were in. If you are wondering why? We could hear our neighbors getting busy with it! Will Smith's gettin jiggy wit it would have been better. Embarassing! Not the song but the other stuff. The rating is for cottage. The staff did what they could to help us. I would come back if they refresh this dated yet charming property.

First-Time Visit Impresses! Excellent Food the Key Takeaway!!This was my first-time visit to the Sherwood Inn, I came during the unseasonably mild weekend of November 6 to 8, 2020 - perfect luck! I stayed in a room in the Cedarwood Lodge, which is situated right on the lake, just a brief walk from the Main Lodge. I had an upper-level room with a wonderful lake view, very clean and spacious, with a decent bathroom, although the water pressure wasn't the best. The Mail Lodge houses additional guest rooms, the main restaurant (Vintages) and the bar (The Lounge). The Lounge is a cozy room with wood paneling and beams, and a stone fireplace, probably the best section of the Inn. The food here is absolutely superb, with generous portions and excellent selection. For lunch, I would highly recommend the Sherwood Club with a caesar salad, the sandwich is decadent and very flavourful, with authentic house-smoked turkey breast. The main dining room, Vintages, is rather ordinary and pedestrian (like any hotel), with an awkward built-in laminate dance floor for special occasions. Can a moveable dance -floor not be employed instead? Although large and bright, it doesn't have the warm Muskoka charm and ambience that I would expect from a Muskoka resort, it needs a whole new look, with better lighting. Nonetheless, the dinner menu is excellent with a variety of options, the striploin and salmon are recommended. I found after my first night that I didn't particularly care for eating inside Vintages itself and asked if I could eat dinner in The Lounge on my second night, and this was happily accommodated. (On another note, the servers are all extremely attentive and courteous, and the bar/cocktail menu is excellent - they make a mean sangria which is hard to find) If you're a foodie and gourmand and expect good-quality food, I highly recommend staying at the Sherwood Inn. This is not a high-end resort like The Rosseau, but the rooms are clean and comfortable and reasonably priced, and the food more than makes up for anything you feel may be weak or lacking.
