We loathed it and will never be back!

Although we had booked it online, this hotel had no record of our reservation when we arrived, and the foolish young woman behind the counter burst out into fits of giggles every time we tried to speak to her about the problem. Eventually we appealed to a more sensible employee who actually tried to help resolve the problem rather than sitting there giggling. It turned out they had lost the reservation but after some forty minutes they eventually agreed it was their mistake and gave us the room at the booked rate. It was, however, small, grim and the bathroom was dirty. The dark corridors were depressing and the hotel seemed to do quite a lot of 'by the hour' business. Furthermore, the Internet didn't work at all. There was also a lot of shouting and arguments amongst the staff: avoid, avoid, avoid!

This hotel is way past its sell-by-date dont even consider staying here!

How this hotel is still open we will never know. We spent one night here after our original booking at another hotel fell through. On arrival the reception area seemed fairly modern and upmarket and although no one spoke a word of English, one receptionist really did try her best to assist us. The rest of the hotel (i.e. what is behind closed doors) is absolutely revolting. We booked a twin room with private bathroom which was run-down, filthy and smelly. Our bed springs were poking out, the ancient furniture flaky and peeling and we had a serious leak pouring through the ceiling. The condoms for sale on the bedside table added the final touch to the tacky bussiness hotel and only confirmed that they should really consider changing their room rates to by the hour than by the night. We had a look at the room pictures on the Elong website after leaving and had a good laugh at how completely deceptive they were.

Good location but otherwise just 'OK'

We only spent a night here, en route to Pingyao, so it's hard to make a good judgment call on it. On the plus side, the location is good, on an easy to find, central street full of retail stores, near a lovely park, a 5-10min taxi ride from the main train station and close to Food Street, which is a really cool and fun place to go and eat at night. The room was a decent size and clean enough - nice sheets and a clean bathroom. On the negative side, the reception, hallways and the room smelled of stale cigarettes; it's still acceptable to smoke inside in many places in China. The decor and vibe of our room involved lots of 1980s style smoky mirrors and there were obvious stains on the carpet. The reception staff do not speak any English and there was no safe in the room OR at reception (to stash our passports and cash). Breakfast was included but we didn't have time to take it so I can't comment on that. For AUD 70 I thought it was poor value for money but it served the purpose of a one night stopover.
