Now known as Shangtex Hotel. Mediocre experience.

Rooms were fairly clean, beds were pretty hard (usual in China) but tolerable. Noisy, but that's just normal for Shanghai unless you're on a very high floor. There's a slightly odd bathroom arrangement with a window directly into the shower right next to the bed (we had a twin room) - make sure to draw the blind before stepping in! The bathroom door handle kept falling off leading to my roommate being trapped inside the bathroom a few times requiring me to barge the door open to rescue them! This wasn't fixed despite being reported three times (it's not clear whether the front desk understood the problem as their English was poor, despite being billed as an international hotel. More of which below). I put a pair of jeans in to the cleaning service (owing to an unfortunate accident with a meat bun), requesting the more expensive express service as we were checking out the next day, and they came back 4 hours later than promised and still damp. Needless to say I didn't pay for express service. We stayed as part of an international conference (main language English), which this hotel purports to cater to, and found the lack of spoken English among front desk staff very difficult to deal with. This was a particular problem because every time we had arranged a conference room at a specific time it either wasn't ready, or wasn't open for us, and there was great difficulty in communicating with the front desk to get everything sorted out. The front desk were obstructive and unaccommodating to very basic and undemanding requests. We would not use this venue for a conference again. There's no hotel lounge to speak of, so for breaking out from the conference we were limited to paying for drinks in the European beer bar attached to the hotel (admittedly a cool place, the selection of beers is brilliant (if expensive) and the staff there are lovely and friendly). Location is fairly convenient near the Nanjing Road and French Concession, there are metro stations not far away and the area seems safe. Breakfast was average at best - though there was quite a wide selection of food (mainly Chinese options, though I love that). The juice was horrible sugary water and the coffee was okay. Overall it just didn't work for a conference group and there were too many niggly faults to recommend it.

Check which building you are in

We were surprised to get a room in a building next to the hotel, rather than in the main hotel building. The room itself was OK, but the entrance, corridors etc were really not nice and the building is of a much lower standard than the main building. There was no mention of this when we booked the room so were quite upset by this. The location of the hotel is fairly good. Walkable distance to Nanjing Rd, and about 15 mins walk to West Nanjing Rd metro station. There are shops and eateries nearby on Nanjing Rd. Taxis are cheap but hard to find during certain hours, so be prepared to do some walking if you need to travel somewhere during those times.

    Good location

This hotel is a standard Chinese hotel, so be prepared to get what you paid for. The Shangtex (as it is now known), is about 10-15 minutes away from Henglong Shopping Centre and the Kerry Centre. The hotel staff do not speak English, so either come-prepared to gesture a lot, or, brush up on your mandarin skills. The hotel is clean, it is quiet (enough), and the bed is VERY hard (as expected for Chinese hotel, so no points are lost there). The hotel is located on a street corner, I recommend making your way down ShaanXi Bei Lu toward Jing'An Temple - this street is full of a few cute bars/beer street stalls, and some really great cafes which are very Melbourne-esque. It's worth wandering around the area. My recommendation is the coffee at The Sumatran. So good.

Quiet, understated, and minutes walk from cool shops

Located in a quiet part of Jingan, Shantgtex (formerly Hufang) is a bargain with its rate. For business travel, it's adequate. For leisure, the hotel is minutes walk from trendy cafes and restaurants, with streets lined with large trees and historical buildings that are begging for their stories to be told. Though dated, the rooms are unexpectedly large. Mine is actually equipped with a mahjang table. I don't believe there are smoke-free rooms, though. The biggest knock on it is the WIFI connection, which was too slow to get anything done.

    Not too satisfying stay

I am giving it a 3 stars mainly due to it is a big room and very near to my office. Front desk, i arrived at 11:30pm.. they did a shabby check in, not smiling, a faulting magnetic door card that then after reaching my room, cannot entry, yet make an trip down to front desk to request card to be re-register again! I am at level 2, the noise level is high. Cars speeding and people chatting downstairs. The room cleaniness, they do not clean all spots.. disappointed
