  We love shade. Just did an overnight staycation. Its hip. Trendy. And great location for walking to restaurants and bars. In the day they have bikes you can check out and go for a ride on the strand. Ask for a quiet room. Have fun. @nickellfamilytravel

  Terrible customer service

  In December, I booked three rooms online at the hotel. Because I did not receive confirmations through their online booking service (the hotel system just kind of stalled), I called the hotel to ensure I had booked the proper number of rooms. I actually called several times before reaching someone who could help-but we had a lengthy conversation and my three-room reservation was confirmed. When we arrived at the hotel, they had six rooms reserved for us. The check-in person acknowledged the error and we thought that was the end of it. However, they have since charged us for all six rooms and refused to take off the extra charges of about $1500. I called multiple times to address this issue unsuccessfully-people said they would call back and never did. Very disappointing particularly since I actually was there paying for three expensive rooms and it was their error.

  Amazing stay!

  I had an incredible stay at the Shade Hotel. The hospitality was amazing even amid COVID, everyone was very helpful and friendly. The hotel restaurant was open outdoors and was a very welcoming relaxing environment to spend time at. The penthouse room was perfect, very spacious, had a fun mini beer on tap in the room, great Jacuzzi-like bathtub and huge shower with comfy bathrobes. The room service food was delicious, probably the best avocado toast and French toast Ive ever had. Definitely coming back!

  Do not host your wedding here, thieves.

  This review is for hosting events here. Do not host your wedding here. We were scheduled to have a 200 person wedding in October and placed a deposit for $15,000. Unfortunately with Covid, Shade Hotel wasnt able to host the wedding. They refused to give us our deposit back. They were willing to host a luncheon in the upper deck for 20-50 people and wanted to charge us the $15,000 deposit. We could not bare to spend that much money for a simple luncheon, no live music, no dancing, no socializing. We requested to host smaller dinner and appropriately price the celebration but they were not willing to negotiate and demanded we spend the whole deposit or we loose it. The only compensation they are willing to give us is credit for their hotel for $15000.00 which is ridiculous. We spoke multiple times to their managers including Melissa and she said we should be happy we are not obligated to pay the full amount of $52,000. It saddens me that businesses like this who are supposed to support couples and marriages are not willing to work with us and refusing to give our deposit back. Furthermore, we reserved a room block for 20 rooms for the wedding. They are giving me a hard time for the deposit I placed and are telling me it is not negotiable despite Shade hotel not being able to host our event. Look elsewhere for your wedding and save the disappointment with these thieves.

  Lovely Stay but Disappointed Room/Tub Experience

  I have stayed at Shade Manhattan Beach a few times now as a local for a staycation. This last weekend, my boyfriend and I stayed in room 222 which was by all means just as lovely as the last times. The spa tub (there is one in every room) was slightly broken though. There were jets that were not working, and the chromatherapy light in the tub was broken too. I figured I would just mention it upon checkout as it was not that huge a deal, but I would have expected a bit more in terms of maybe waiving a night of parking ($15) or something, an apology even? We received a "thank you for letting us know" and we went on our way after 2 nights. All in all the hotel is amazing, wonderful walkable area for shops and restaurants and the above will not keep us from going back. Just hoping that when a couple comes to the hotel, with obviously the spa bath in mind, it might be worth more to acknowledge and try to offer them something to leave a better lasting impression (especially for the $800 plus we paid for 2 nights).
