This review is about Crimean peninsula as a whole and targeted towards Western tourists (Mainly Australian tourists)

So let me offer a full disclosure to start with. I am from Australia, but I am an admirer of the Russian historical legacy with its richness and valour. I also am reminded of the significant Russian sacrifices in defence of Crimea and Sevastopol in particular. So I am a supporter of the Russian claim of Crimea and hence this review has to be taken from that perspective. Negatives of visiting the Crimean peninsula as a western tourist: The main problem for western tourists would be that we are unable to book any of the hotels/restuarants online. This is because of the sanctions but it does pose a significant inconvenience. So its always good to call or email and confirm any booking of a hotel or an tour or a rental car. The second problem is that none of our bank cards will be valid in Crimea and hence for all intentions and purposes, Crimea will be a cash only destination for western tourists. This also not only can be a inconvenience but sometimes can be frightening as would be the case if we run out of cash or gets stolen. Hence make sure that you have enough cash and somekind of safekeep prior to entering Crimea. Thirdly, the roads are atrocious !!! I mean they are horrible. To start with, you might be able to tolerate them, but eventually the codition of the roads do get on your nerves. If you are driving, well at least add an hour for your travel time to account for the poor condition of the roads. Fourthly, there are no beaches. Only pebble beaches exist and if thats your thing, then go ahead. Fifthly, Prices are expensive beyond even european prices at times (especially in Yalta). This is because of the massive overheads due to the sanctions but its something that needs to be taken into account. Then there are the swindlers and crooks. These are more numerous than in the Russian mainland and beware of them expecially near the historical sites. They will try to sell you all kinds of stuff and the true cost not apparent initially. Given you will be carrying cash as well, be careful. Positives: Especially Sevastopol is a very historical place. This is a nice little city to relax in and walk around in. The people as is the case with anywhere in Russia, are very nice, helpful and will give you a hand whenever they can. There are very many castles to see, and they are georgous and romantic. Do give them a visit. The Inkeriman vineywards and the Massandra vineyards are a must see. Please make arrangements to go and visit them. There are about three tours per day but closed on some days. So email them and check prior tio planning the visit. Nice historical sites as well including Mangup-Kale and Chukotka which have old fortresses atop the hills. Its a nice walk. Dont hire any vehicles to go up there as the walk is better. Beware of swindlers on the way as they will offer you free parking in exchange for tours or a meal in their restaurant (the hidden cost not apparent at first glance). Conclusion: If you want an intrepid journey, Crimean peninsula is a great place to visit. However if you are after a relaxing holiday or a extension to your Russian vacation from the mainland, then I might give Crimea a miss. Russia is a big country and there are many more places which will accept credit cards, online bookings, better roads than crimea. Hope this helps :)

4 days, 3 nights at the Sevastopol Hotel

Really enjoyed my stay here. The rooms are clean, the service is good (i speak english and it was fine), and breakfast is included. Also, the location is great because you are right next to the bay and can easily access a boat tour. Not to mention, at night, there is usually some type of festivity that is going on. I definitely recommend this place. Not to bring up the politics, but just FYI, at this moment they only accept Russian credit cards, so do prepare to have rubles or an acceptable form of payment. I emailed them and they were able to notify me about methods to pay.

The best and heaven for English speakers

Ive already been many many times to Crimea/Sevastopol and Im always staying in this hotel. There has not much changed in between the Ukrainian and Russian period. Before it was part of Best Western chain, now it is independent. Besides the new logo nothing has changed to their service level. A service level which is very good and which meets the European level, although with a small Russian twist. But this makes it charming. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is very complete and tastefully. Not the same way as you would see it in an US or European chain hotel, but still very good. They have different sizes of rooms, most biggest suites are looking out over the Black sea and have a terrace. I can recommend them. There is also a full spa in the hotel. Worth to stop there, the staff will help you make a selection in their wide range of treatments. Prices are ok. The location is very central and there is always something to do, for all ages. But be aware that only a few people dare to speak English (they never practice because there are only a few English speaking people there). Concerning the transfer to the airport in Simferopol (count on 2 hours), the hotel offers a very nice, safe and professional (paid) shuttle service. There is even wifi in their Volkswagen Multivan. If you need to be in Sevastopol, there is only one place. Hotel Sevastopol.

    Beautiful hotel with excellent service

I stayed here for three nights and had a really great time! I liked the historical atmosphere of the hotel and the location is perfect. The staff is very attentive and speaks English. The breakfast buffet is very good with a lot of choices. I can also recommend the French café "23 La Brasserie", located in the same building, with delicious cakes and a nice terrace.
