A very good, traditional German 4* Superior Family HotelThe hotel is situated in a very nice place, close to the mountains and the ski infrastructure. Oberstdorf is a quite and nice small town full of shops and restaurants. There are some places for young people and for families. The Hotel is focused on the adult people. We were a bit younger (30+38) than the average guests, but it is not a clinic for old and disabled people how someone mentioned below =) It is a very nice place for wealthy German adults (around 45-60) with a specific atmosphere of relax and silence. The rooms are well equipped. We had a room at the new building. It was clean, well designed, full of expensive furniture. The doors were thick and the silence was provided on the highest level. The room was also equipped with the coffee machine. And a very good coffee by the way. So we managed to make coffee in the morning right in front of our balcony with an awesome look at the mountains =) before the breakfast. The meals were rich, tasty, good German breakfast. Lots of cheese, sausages, salads, bakery, muesli. All you need to stay in comfort till the evening dinner. We had a package of breakfast and evening meals included with a very reasonable price. The evening meals were provided with a good choice of meat, vegetarian and fish dishes. Great selection of German and European wines and local German fruit distillates. The SPA branch looks very well, great pool without any smells, warm hall around the pool so you can sit there and look at the snow outside trough the big windows. Near the pool you may find a large sauna, steam bath, salt bath and stuff like that. All is large and designed for big crowds so even if there are more than 5-6 people around you do not feel discomfort. Be prepared that Germans visit sauna totally naked (all man and woman together) which may affect some cultural differences. Massage was also good as well as the room for after massage relaxation. The hotel has a large parking (free) and you may use it for your car. The travelling from Stuttgart Airport by car takes about 2,5 hours if the traffic is ok. For relax, rehab, city escape this place is perfect and we liked it very much. Special thanks to Mr. Schuele (the owner) - who does not hesitate to talk to the guests in person. To criticize a little - the hotel web page is in German only. Mostly the hotel is oriented and focused on Germans. But we felt ok there.

Wonderful Spring BreakOur first visit to Oberstdorf brought us to Schuele's for a healthy week. The warm welcome by the team and Mr. Schuele was leading to a very nice room in the new part with a fantastic view and sun all day on the balcony. Altough we had reduced "food" we enjoyed all of it and together with the walks in the area spent a healthy time. Everybody was very friendly, welcoming and professional. A real joy to have such well, family managed hotel. Gladly come back!

Chaos and excellenceBack in July, we booked to come here for the Christmas/New Year fortnight. Even then, the choice of available room was limited, but the prospect of all of the fitness/wellness offerings was compelling; to the extent that a friend, plus another couple, also decided to join us here for the New Year/Sylvester week. On arrival, we waited a while for assistance getting our bags and ski-gear up to our room and were disappointed at the small size of the room and that it overlooked the car-park, facing north west. Furthermore, for a double room, there was only one armchair. We phoned reception and asked for another chair and were provided with a 'stacking seminar room style' chair. We rejected this as unacceptable and helped ourselves to an armchair from the adjacent corridor. The wardrobe storage in our room was inadequate for a 2 week stay. No drawers, only hanging space and shelves. There was no kettle or in-room coffee provision. All unimpressive for a 2 week stay at this price point. We also noticed during our stay that the price for our room was lower on their website than we had been quoted and accepted. The wellness/fitness infrastructure is impressive and there was a daily/weekly programme of activities, but the architecture of the hotel is such that the old and new wings do not join up on the ground floor. One has to go down to the basement, or up to the 1st floor, to get from one end to the other. Confusing at first, but eventually becomes useable. The ski bus stop is just about 100m away, the return stop just across the road. The food quality is very good, but the service can be slow and querky. Our Christmas Day Gala Dinner took over 2 hours before our main courses arrived. We pointed this out to the Maitre D', but he just shrugged and said it was a 5 course dinner. We also mentioned it to Reception after, who said they would speak to the Owners about it. There was no response from the Owners. Our friends arrived at the beginning of our 2nd week, both of whom had larger rooms, bright, south facing. The slow dinner service was less of an issue with lively group conversation, but still remained inconsistent for the rest of the holiday. The New Year Gala Dinner was very enjoyable with an impressive fire-work display. On reflection, I have the feeling that the Owners are completely out of touch with how their establishment is being managed, and that the standard of service is inconsistent. One waiter was fab, the rest 'all over the place'. One room-maid fab, the other indifferent. Would I come back? Hmmmm, Oberstdorf is a great location for Christmas and New Year, and this year there was good skiing. However, upon reading reviews of other similar hotels, the same issues are coming up. I suspect that good staff are difficult to keep and Owners are insufficiently hands-on to maintain standards in, what is otherwise, a good winter resort town .

The best of old BavariaWe bookended a trip to Italy with weekends at Schuele's. This was our first time staying here, on the recommendation of our son who lives in Oberstdorf. This hotel stands out in terms of staff and location. Regarding staff, they were very attentive and anxious to please. English was not a problem except once when we returned late to a desk man who spoke a little English. But the stunner is the location. The hotel is located on the edge of Oberstdorf, where residential turns to farm land. Our room was an upgraded balcony that looked out over a pastoral scene leading up to the magnificent Alps. The hotel has a small pool and they set up loungers in the grassy meadow - great for a relaxing afternoon with a book and that view! When we returned, we requested the same room and gladly paid a small upcharge to get it. There is a small farm with about 15 cows next door, and each early morning and afternoon they made their way along the street to a nearby pasture. The tinkling of the cowbells was such a nice way to begin and end our day. There is a very nice spa, pool and exercise facility which we used. The only negative was the massage therapist - a mediocre experience for us. The room we were in was not air conditioned, but we were there in late June and we just slept with the balcony doors open - temperatures were good. The hotel has a nice restaurant, and the terrace breakfast is not to be missed! The hotel is an easy walk to the heart of downtown Oberstdorf and other restaurants.

Great View & Location, Friendly Staff and FacilitiesOur two-continent family group of 6 stayed in the Chalet attached to the hotel. What a view! The facilities were excellent - comfortable rooms, a private outdoor sitting area, a well-appointed kitchen, and access to the full recreational facilities of the resort. The pool - fantastic! The outdoor seating and service, very pleasant. The resort is located at the edge of Oberstdorf, providing unobstructed views of the nearby mountains and the meadows fronting them. We found the full town readily available to us as walkers - shops, restaurants galore. A wonderful stay and experience.
