Pretty dreadful... Only saving grace is the view

My wife arranged a 3 night stay at this hotel to watch the Tour de France as a birthday treat. Unbeknown to me until we checked out was quite how much they were charging per night! It was a ridiculous amount for what really should be at tops Euro 50 a night! It really isn't worth anymore. Upon arrival, the receptionist was abrupt to say the least and not particularly welcoming. The room we had was extremely hot at all times (despite it raining and only being between 18-22 degrees C outside) and was equipped with a fan for this.. The room was basic in a Formule 1 / old Travelodge style... The décor was old, the carpets were a strange brown colour - not sure there were stains on it or whether that was the pattern! The bed was OK - at least that was clean. Furniture / bedside lamps looked fresh from a car boot sale of someone selling their recently deceased grandmother's household effects. The bathroom looked like some kind of torture chamber with a strange contraption as a toilet which had a ledge before the water itself to catch any excrement - presumably so that it could be harvested / examined one of the torture chamber's staff perhaps? Even with continuous flushing, and without wishing to be too graphic here, there was a continual brown stain on the ceramic of the ledge which refused to disappear. The hairdryer overheated within a minute or so and you had to let it cool down before further use. The first mini bar was "free" - this comprised of 2 bottles of water, 2 bottles of Coca-Cola (full sugar, nothing diet) and 2 bottles of apple juice. Given what we were paying, I'd have expected a waiter to serve us whatever scant offerings they had. Breakfast was the same on Saturday and Sunday (some bread, some sausages, scrambled eggs, a few small pastries and a fruit bar selection) but noticeably less than even that on offer on Monday. You were ordered to sit only where there were cups... Needless to say, if you arrived there anytime after 9am, many of the cups had not been replaced so you had no idea where to sit. Staff, apart from the young lady serving breakfast who was helpful were at best terse, at worse rude. However, if you spoke German (we don't and nor did a few of the guests we saw), then the staff were extremely helpful, fawning all over their German speaking guests. The Brits / Aussies / South Africans that were there had to endure a distinct lack of courtesy but maybe they don't want tourists in their town? Who knows. We had one meal in the restaurant which seems to be a popular place for locals to eat on a Sunday. The food was good - it has to be said and the waitress serving us was very accommodating but given that we paid 3-4 times the standard price per night (presumably for the Tour de France, although the receptionist said they were only half full when we arrived!!!) it was really nothing more than anyone would have expected from a hotel. If you're going to the Messe for a conference or something, this is undoubtedly convenient but be careful of their direct pricing (much, much cheaper via on line websites such as TripAdvisor) and don't expect any kind of service. We were so disappointed with this hotel but didn't let it ruin our stay in Duesseldorf. That said, I would be ashamed if I were the owner or even the manager that they treat non-German speakers in such a way and most staff (at least at reception) seem to have no idea of giving a good service and are more interested in chatting with each other than attending to the needs of their guests. The only saving grace for this hotel is the view over the Rhine which is spectacular. They do however, need to complete re-fit / makeover and employ some friendlier staff. We certainly will never return to this place.

    Dissapointing and sad

How can this be a more than one-star hotel? Curtains and toilets are stained. There is barely anything in the room to make your stay comfortable. There is no air conditioning and believe me, even though it was a rainy and windy weekend, night were unbearably hot (unless of course you'd left the filthy window open which on a rainy and windy day is not ideal. Just have a look at the photos I am uploading to see why, when charging more than 350.00 Euros per night, this amount is laughable. Of course it was the start of the Tour de France but for what the hotel offers, these prices are a daylight robbery... Be prepare to eat the same eggs and sausages for the duration of your stay as there is not much more than that and - if you do not speak German - then you are stuck!. Never again we will stay here, not even the views from the restaurant to the river make up for what you receive here.

    Crossroads motel

Stayed for one night On first sight thoughts came rushing back of the tv series crossroads motel ,but I was pleasantly surprised on front of house..Yes the chalet looked daunting but inside they were clean tidy and comfortable..Yes the rooms are very warm, but it is winter at the moment..Evening meal was really good quality, however expensive..The staff were polite, possibly because I know a little german, but if I didnt understand spoke good English, which was nice..Breakfast is unknown at the moment, but I would suggest that you give peace a chance..When in Rome!!

    A hotel near fairgrounds

The biggest plus of this hotel is its location. It is in walking distance from fairgrounds in Düsseldorf. I am used to get all information on check-in. I needed to go back to get information about breakfast, then again about WiFi. Stuff is polite, but I did not feel welcome. When I found out in the night, that bath is slightly blocked and the quilt is for small children I did not feel to go ask again... Breakfast - I could eat it... Finally view from my room - the only window was the door. Maybe when you ask you get better view...

    What a shame

This beautiful and stunning property directly located on the River Rhein had a very special place in my heart as it was the favorite place of my late father. Therefore every time I am in the city I try to go there for a nostalgic moment. Most unfortunately, my yesterday experience has spoiled any mood to ever go back. I ordered a massive 400gr ."Burgsteak" (which is advertised as only medium cooked, which is the correct way to do it, so, I was expecting nothing less than perfection.) What arrived was a well done, inedible sole of some kind. Too embarrassed to protest I tried my best to chew through it, but gave up after my 3rd bite. Timidly I asked the young waitress for advice, as I am not someone who likes to complain. She offered to discuss it with the cook, she came then back telling me that this meat is like it is and that it is not the cooks fault. What to do? I sent the full plate back and asked for the bill, as my mood was already spoiled and surely I wouldnt have been able to bite my way through that thing on my plate. I then overheard the cook shouting some obscenities, probably about me. The bill arrived and I paid in full; not even an attempt of apology was made. Dear Schnellenburg management, you have a cook with a Gordon Ramsey Syndrome and your staff has no idea on how to handle a serious and educated complain. Why do you even bother to keep a façade of exclusivity shame on you! Dear readers, be extra careful if you go there, it is admittedly a beautiful location, but surely overpriced and very, very unprofessional, you may want to prefer a nicer place and there are plenty.
