Stepping back in HistoryI booked this location for my daughter and son-in-law during a recent visit to family near by. They loved the experience. Their room had all modern amenities, and the place itself was steeped in history. Restorations had been completed with lots of attention to authentic details. The swans on the moat surrounding the castle completed the picture perfect venue. The chapel on site was being decorated for a wedding that was to take place the next day and I could not think of a more perfect place. We had dinner in the basement of the castle which required passage through the kitchen - quaint and unusual. The food was great. It was an enjoyable experience all around.

Great for day trip, not for over-night stayI spent an entire weekend here for my father's wedding. Since there are so many aspects to such an event, I'll leave separate ratings for different things below. Accessibility and Functionality (0/5 stars): I am surprised German authorities have not demanded that this place is made safer. The stairs are extremely narrow and slippery. Over the stairs, there is a slippery carpet that only makes the situation worse. I, an athletic 24 y/o, had difficulties getting down the stairs. I would take off my heels, hold onto the railing and slowly go down. Knowing that there was no way my grandparents would ever make it up and down these stairs, I recommended that they at least be put on the first floor (second floor if you're an American reading this), as there are no rooms on the ground level. Still, my grandmother ended up in the hospital having to get her hand X-rayed after falling down the stairs. At the hospital, the nurses told her that almost every weekend there where Gartrop guests getting treated. There is of course also no elevator and Gartrop is not suitable for anyone in a wheelchair or in crutches. The hotel rooms are beautiful but also not functional. For example, in my room, the shower door would not close and all the outlets where behind a heavy oak bed. Clearly, whoever designed this is not a professional and only concerned about appearance. Venue (5/5 stars): The grounds, of course, are gorgeous. The pictures looked amazing. Here, it's all about the setting. Staff (0/5 stars) Gartrop was severely understaffed. The entire restaurant only had two servers that were also responsible for the hotel's reception. They also lacked any training in their field and couldn't bring out more than two plates at a time. Having a rehearsal dinner with around 15 people took about 4 hours. The woman in charge couldn't have been more impolite. At one point she yelled at wedding guests. I was mortified. Then, she would spew incorrect information to justify herself. When we asked if a vegetarian guest could have more sides instead of shrimp she simply said no and that in some random email she and the wedding planner had decided that vegetarians would also eat fish. She really left a bad taste in everyone's mouths. Food and drink (1/5 stars): The wine list was so terrible that we brought our own wine, champagne and rose and paid approx. a $40 cork fee to the castle per bottle opened. With a wedding party of 90 people that adds up quick, but anything was better than the cheap wine they offered. The waitresses where so slow and only refilled some guest's glasses twice that we ended up having to take 17 boxes of wine home again. The food was mediocre, generally too salty, and inconsistent. Some people would have salads swimming in the sauce while other guests got no sauce at all - very strange. At the end of the weekend, my aunt made everyone in the family promise that we would never have another event here again. She is generally the sweetest woman so hearing criticism from her says it all. Overall, I cannot recommend for more than picture taking.

Not worth the stress that followedOne of my best friends booked this wonderful location for their wedding. To put it short: Wonderful location destroyed by absolute mismanagement. Some tables got the dinner one hour later than the others. The friendly but unexperienced staff tried their best, but the fish stinks from the head and the management is responsible for this horrendous, unprofessional and unfriendly service experience. The owners tried to overcharge at every occasion and were cheap on drinks and all services needed for a successful wedding. Do not get married here, but enjoy the castle during a day trip and avoid the owner. Otherwise, you will regret it.

DISGUSTING Hotel ExperienceWe came all the way from UK to experience this. We stayed for 1 night in one of the rooms @ Room #22 for my cousins wedding on the 1st Sept 2018. On the way up to the rooms, theres a horrible smelly male toilet. The stairs are so slippery and at the top theres a slippery red carpet that makes the situation worse. The moment we entered the room it was really stinky, the smell coming from the shower drainage. I kept spraying perfume in the room to be able to stay and tolerate the smell. I thought after using the shower and flushed the drainage will make the smell disappear but it didnt. Until the time we checked out the next morning the smell didnt change. It was soooooo disgusting considering the rate of your rooms are so expensive. Theres a supposed to be free wifi but useless. Not even allow you to use your own mobile data as the room is a dead spot. The other rooms above the reception where my other relatives stayed, there was no lift/elevator, only the very long slippery stairs that are not suitable for elderly guests and persons with disability, NOT AT ALL! I would NEVER RECOMMEND this to my friends and family and definitely would never come back to this place!!!
