King of the Castle? We received a very warm welcome on arrival and were informed that it was the oldest castle in Germany although it felt quite modern with the contemporary fittings around. Its a very striking property in the middle of a small town. Rooms are at the back of the castle in a new modern annexe and we had a large, contemporary corner suite which was very comfortable. However, if you want to feel youve slept in a castle, this might not be quite what you had imagined. Reception staff took time to tell us about the castle and invited us to look around it at our leisure. The restaurant looked excellent although we did not eat there as we arrived late. Although not an issue, my only suggestion would be given the brochures at reception and room information are in both German and English, it perhaps it would be nice to extend this to the breakfast menu too as I felt a little sorry for the waitress trying to help us understand what we were ordering! Overall, a lovely stop for one night and would recommend a visit.

Haunted Castle? For those visiting the Fussen area, this castle should not be overlooked. It's located in a small village just a short distance from Fussen. The staff made us feel at home immediately upon arrival. Shortly after settling in the head waiter at the castle gave us a personal tour of the oldest castle in Germany. He told us about a friendly ghost who can be seen when photographing an old oil painting. The tour included a nice library where Knights used to stay and a small chapel that is open to the local community. The rooms are well appointed and have nice views of the grounds. DInner in the well appointed dining room was delicious. The head waiter regaled us with stories of Mad King Ludwig. Breakfast in the same room as dinner was very good as well and the waitress was delightful.

Lovely castle - not sure if rooms are worth the priceStayed at the Schloss zu Hopferau for one night as the end of an Alps road trip. The castle is of course something special, incredibly well kept and has a lot to offer. Staff were good and the location was perfect for heading to Fuessen or even heading to Munich. The rooms at the new wing at the back are very new, modern and comfortable. But our concerns with this place was that the rooms are absolutely tiny! Given the price of the hotel (and we have stayed at similar castle hotels in the Main wine region) this does not really meet the value for money test. Admittedly yes you can spent time outside the room but that is besides the point. The other concern was breakfast, whilst this offered a small but sufficient spread, we arrived a little later (around 8.30/9am) it appeared that many other guests had already eaten and food was not being replaced/drinks not being refilled, so we were not able to have quite a few of the items on the small buffet. This again was just not acceptable for a hotel that charges the price it does. However, do explore the hotel and have a walk around its beautiful old rooms. There is a lot of history to take in and also nice gardens to enjoy in the summer.

Very friendly people and great locationWe stayed in this little Schloss, with supposedly great important history, on our way back home after short skiing trip. Very friendly people and great to be in such a nice historic building. First time we upfront were asked what type of matrass we would prefer. Fantastic!
