    Quiet and friendly

I wanted a place with rotenburo (outdoor bath inside the room) but quieter than the most popular hotels. The most popular hotels have like hundreds of rooms so they may be suitable for groups, but we just like to relax and enjoy quiet time in the rotenburo, and Sasara was a great choice for us. Building looks a bit old but I didn't mind. Room was wide and pretty (Japanese style, wood). The staff that served us dinner and breakfast were very friendly. The white rice is a special rice so it tasted really good. In winter the Gero area held fireworks display every Saturday and the view was great from our room. We soaked in the rotenburo several times while enjoying the view.

    Excellent Dinner!

My rating for this onsen hotel is mostly due to the very excellent dinner I had . I was also amazed by the fully automated toilet: the seat cover automatically opened when one goes in and close the toilet door and it automatically flushes when one gets up from it. This is not a luxurious hotel but the room is spacious, amenities and onsens are adequate.

    Great service

The installations show some wear, but that is compensated by the great service offered by the staff, who spoke decent English when we stayed. You can get a room with a private bath if public onsen is not your thing, or book a private, beautiful onsen for 30 minutes (1000 yen). We had breakfast and dinner and everything was very carefully made, worth trying (even if not every dish will be to your taste).

    Decent place with excellent servuce

A good over night stay to explore the onsen town. We had the room with the onsen bath which was nice but the room was a bit small for two big luggages and 2 adults. Dinner and breakfast were ok and the ryokan provides free taxi shuttle from train station. The public onsen bath was ok with city view if you use the outdoor one. Overall a decent ryokan and we will like to commend the staff for very friendly and thoughtful service.

    A traditional ryokan

This is a traditional ryokan. The reception was friendly and professional including tea served in your room upon arrival and an orientation as to the various utilities and yukatas. The room was similar to other ryokans we have visited: large with a low table and two chairs in the centre of the room which are replaced by two comfortable futons put into place while we were at dinner. The difference in this ryokan was a small dressing room with a vanity hidden by a natural beam in the corner of the room as well as four upright chairs in front of a long natural beam table in front of the large picture window. I can understand while some reviewers would see the room as being slightly dated with its dark trim but this is offset by bright halls with their floral carpeting and beautiful stained glass windows. As well, the traditional food was superb - artistically prepared and extremely tasty - with multiple dishes served by our gracious hostess. Given the recent investiture of the new Emperor we had a special menu prepared for Year #1 of Reiwa (the name of the Emperor's era). The onsen was equally excellent, with various pools. A great place to start and end the day. All in all an excellent experience.
