STAY AWAYDo not book this hotel believing it is a 4 star hotel, it's not even a 3 star one. The hotel has certainly had its glory days, but that was a very long time ago - very. It's low standard, dull, barely functioning and basically everything is old style. Most guests are over 55. Because hotel is "terme" you need to wear bath cap in all pools. Spa facilities are extremely outdated, looking more like some old testing facility than a spa of today. No lights on the terrace. DO NOT BELIEVE the pictures on booking.com or hotels.com, they are all arranged and photoshop edits. We feel fooled. The bathroom was in poor conditions, shower cabin full of mold stains, the mirror stained and old, the bathroom details rusty, dripping tap, nonfunctioning fan...Cleaning staff did not actually clean the bathroom so the sink, toothbrush stains etc were left untouched after their visit. The AC is dated at least 30 years back and despite on max we had around 29 degrees during the night. Soon it started leaking water heavily, shoes on the floor got all wet. After informing the hotel they simply put a towel and a plastic bucket underneath it! A 4 star hotel...what a bad joke!!! Coffee.. how can Italians not complain about the coffee you get in the breakfast. Tasteless black fluid. Not drinkable if you are coffee addicts like us. Breakfast consists mainly of very low quality foods meant to feed the masses. There is no variation on the breakfast, same every day. So we went out a few times to get some quality and variation. Because we "only" had breakfast included in our room rate and not lunch and dinner, we where placed in a dark corner of the huge and half full canteen, obviously we where second class guests. But after complaining about this we could choose to sit anywhere in the cantine. However we want to give many thanks to the head waiter, always welcoming and professional AND high class dressed. Also Benedetta at the reception, always happy to see us and helpful. Grazie mille. There is much more to say, about the details... but I believe this tells you something. Overall we feel like a bit of our vacation was stolen from us because of the level of disappointment upon arriving to this hotel. Ciao

A lovely relaxed couple of days on a beautiful islandI was lucky enough to have a couple of nights here in early September 2017. I'd just finished a tour of Southern Italy, so I enjoyed the peace and quiet to sleep and recover after an intensive schedule of chasing around and early rises. I got a single room at the back of the hotel on the top (3rd) floor which felt secluded, and had an unobstructed view of the castle, as well as a pretty hillside dotted with little white houses. The room was a good size for a single, and decorated in what I would describe as a rustic style, which is right up my street. Everything was clean and worked perfectly. No non-Italian TV channels unfortunately, but good wifi available in my room, so can't complain. The pool area was lovely, and the basement spa area looked nice too, although I didn't use it in my time at the hotel. The common areas were spacious with plenty of seating areas inside and out, and a few vintage vehicles parked inside added a level of interest you don't normally expect in a hotel lobby! I had expected to feel a little cut off during my time there (wouldn't have been a problem if I had been) as I had read that it was up a hill from the town, but really it's just a very gentle incline as you walk up the main road from the port and town centre, and the road is dotted with shops, gelato stores and restaurants, so you don't feel out on a limb at all. There are some places to eat within a few minutes' walk (try the lovely garden restaurant Caprise? at the nearby roundabout, and more in the main part of the town - easily reached - and not a difficult walk back after a large plate of pasta, I can assure you! There are also a multitude of buses which use this main road (one street back from the hotel), so getting public transport either locally or around the island shouldn't be a problem (I didn't have time to explore, but am told it takes an hour to travel round the island on the public bus). Indeed, now I know where the hotel is, I think it would be perfectly possible to catch a local bus from near the port/town centre to the hotel rather than get a taxi - I noted route number 5 and 6 among the ones that passed, and I imagine there are more. The hotel also runs a shuttle bus to the town at various times throughout the day during the summer months, so getting out and about is a doddle. I didn't eat evening meals at the hotel, as I wanted to go out and explore the town in the evenings, but the breakfast offered a good range including my beloved scrambled eggs, and a large selection of cakes which I thought it would be rude not to sample. If I'd stayed longer I would have happily given the restaurant a try, along with the entertainment they run on certain evenings. Yes, it is true that many hotels offer evening entertainment, which meant you would hear singing lilting through the air as you walked about Ischia town and on the way back to the hotel (something I found quite nice, rather than an annoyance). I did not experience this at San Valentino though, so can't comment on the noise level, but would only say this: that music is part of people enjoying themselves, so if people on holiday enjoy a bit of evening entertainment then that's a nice thing isn't it? (I'm not talking all night parties, just a crooner on a microphone...). If you don't want to hear people enjoying themselves when you go on holiday, then stay at home I guess. My short experience of the hotel was that it was largely populated by Italian guests, and so if the staff spoke Italian and not English this seemed to make sense given that I was in Italy. I liked the fact I was staying somewhere that the locals would want to spend their holidays, unlike so many places you go. Besides, I was encountered several times by an extremely pleasant and helpful female receptionist who spoke very good English and was only too willing to help/advise if I needed. I appreciate that I was only at the hotel for a short period of time, and may not have the same expectations of a holiday that others do (particularly given that I seem to have got my room for an extremely good price), but I was saddened to read some of the other very negative reviews on this site when I enjoyed my time there so much, so wanted to encourage people to give San Valentino a chance, ideally if they can bag the kind of bargain I did! (FYI I have since noticed the hotel's own website advertises half board deals later in the year). I fell in love with Ischia staying at this place, and will definitely be heading back to discover more of this beautiful island in the future, and although I hate the thought of more visitors affecting its unspoiled charm, I'd encourage you to see for yourself.

Old roomFriendly staff, free Wifi (working fine), and nice swimming pool (which I did not try). 25 minutes walking from the port (upwards) and good restaurants nearby (especially one in the same street). But my room was quite disappointing. Let us say that it was modern, back in the 70s...
