The worst hotel I have ever stayed inIf I could sum up my stay at the Saint Petersburg it would be this: simply dire. I stayed in an unrenovated room which was a good price on the face of it. That was until I realised that I could have stayed at nicer hostels for a cheaper price. The foyer of the hotel was dingy which boded well as a first impression. In our twin room the curtains did not close all the way so sunlight streamed into my room in the morning. The paint on the ceiling was cracking and coming off the walls. Meanwhile in the bathroom there was no attachment for the shower head and the bath felt scummy. Somewhat bizzarely the toilet was in the middle of the room! Nor was there an adequate supply of toilet paper. The furniture in the suite was supported by wooden blocks, goodness only knows where the legs have gotten too! Also the staff were not all fluent English speakers which made asking for help difficult. For this instance I saw no point raising these issues with them at the time. I thought perhaps all these could be somewhat mitigated by the breakfast. False hope indeed. Unless you like a plate of cold meat, stale bread, cold omelette and a stale cake. Again the woman who served us could speak only a little English and did not understand that I wanted tea with milk. Nor were we told by the staff that we would be locked out after 11 pm and be quizzed by a security guard who did not believe we were legitimate guests. Simpy put don't stay here unless you don't expect much of hotels and you want the convenient location. I'm sure Soviet charm exists but you'll simply get Soviet reality at the St Petersburg.

Old world charmOur room on the third floor was spacious with high ceilings and comfortable furnishings and very quiet. Reception always had staff that spoke English and were helpful in recommending restaurants and places to see. Breakfast each morning was good and and the hotel is centrally located.

Hotel closing temporarily for reconstructionJust a note for anyone thinking of booking here in the first half of 2013. We'd booked a room for a stay in July 2013 but received an email in January saying that the hotel would be closing temporarily for reconstruction as of 1 February. No reopening date was given, but as the location is excellent and the building likely to benefit from refurbishment, it may be worth keeping an eye out for it as a place to stay in future.

If you book at such a low price in Kiev, don't expect wondersI have been coming back to this place for a simple reason: It is cheap and extremely central. The place is perfect if you are traveling alone for work and a short period of time to Kiev and do not have high expectations towards a hotel. Furniture and decoration are not nice, the breakfast is very basic and there isn't much eason to spend any time in the hotel other than to sleep. This place is however in the very center and also very cheap compared to other hotels, so if you do not mind the above mentioned "problems" and you just need a place to rest for a few hours then this is your place!

Very nice view of the riverThis hotel is located beside the river with a beautiful view from the restaurant. I had a back view from my room which was so elegant with modern furniture. Also sleeping quality was very good regarding bed and pillows. Despite this elegance the house keeping was awful, I had to report it each day of our stay. The carpets near the toilet were always wet due to understand that you floor drainage. The hotel location was considered far from the metro station around 10- 12 min fast walk. The hotel was also around 400- 600 rubel away from city centre by taxi. Breakfast was the best thing in this hotel with great variety and nice view.
