Trip to IzuSpent 3 nights at this relaxing and quiet place. Its peak season, i.e. maple leaf, so its price was about US800 per night. But this price included breakfast and dinner so not very expensive. This place has only twenty something rooms and most of them have a private onsen so you can enjoy it in your room if you are too shy to be nude in front of others. It has four special family onsen for you to enjoy with your partner or family or friends. It also has large open air onsen for you to bath with strangers. My room is very spacious and has a view of the river. The food is so good here and its only second to the restaurant with Michigan three stars I tried in Kyoto (see my previous review) but that restaurant costs you US500 for a dinner. The service is excellent here. Everything is detail oriented but subtle. All staff are very polite and try hard to help you. Beware that most of them do not speak English and only a few staff know little English so either you speak Japanese or use google translate. To get to the hotel, you first take a ride from the Narita airport to Tokyo station thats about one hour, from Tokyo station to Shuzenji station thats about two hours, and then a bus ride of about 25 minutes. Not easy to get there and the place has nothing to do except onsen, its very different from Tokyo so if you want a city life its not for you.

PerfectionWe wanted to stay at a ryokan with an onsen, but wanted to avoid the more touristy areas. This was a trek to get to, but it was so worth it. We had a Japanese room with an outdoor bath. The room was huge, the bedding comfortable and the bath was lovely. We weren't familiar with how everything worked and, despite the language barrier, everyone was so kind and helpful. We reserved the private onsen twice without any problems. It is absolutely beautiful. The food was amazing. We dined at a two star Michelin restaurant, in Kyoto, the night before we got here and my husband and I thought the meal here was even better. Everything about Sagasawakan, the property, the room, the service, the food, the onsen, was flawless. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

Highly recommended ryokanIn short, this ryokan is highly recommended to those who would like to escape from the city and spend quality time with your important ones. Location: While it is 20 mins away from the closest train station (Shuzenji), it is located close to a river and wood, making the environment very relaxing. It is one of the best places to have a taste of the nature. The only trouble is to get to the hotel. There are public buses from Shuzenji station. But leaving the ryokan is not a problem, as it offered free shuttle service back to Shuzenji / the train station. Room: It was the best part of our stay. The room is large, nicely furnished and clean. We had a private onsen in our room, and it's situation outdoor with cover. You can sit in the soothing water and listen to the running river and humming birds. There were also two comfortable chairs in the room, sitting on which would allow you to look at the green garden and the natural environment outside. It was a relaxing place to refresh your mind. Food: Dinner and breakfast were both perfect. They served dishes with seasonal ingredients, and the two of us could enjoy our own time in a private room when having dinner and breakfast. Service: It was also superb. They helped you with taking your luggage to and from the lobby, and served you well during meals. When we were back to our room after dinner, they also tidied a little bit for us to sleep.

Amazing Experience worth the priceWe took a 3 hour trip from Tokyo to visit Sagasawakan, in the picturesque hot spring countryside surrounded by amazing views of the rivers, fields, trees and mountains. Taking the Shinkansen, then train, then bus, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted at the Bus Stop and guided into the Ryokan (taking in our luggage as well). Such amazing service at arrival set the bar for which the staff at Sagasawakan easily matched. Once we checked in we were provided with a guide who also acted as our server during our stay. She provided great service, and while English communication wasn't 100%, her effort, and attitude were outstanding, and the English was good enough that we understood the facilities available to us, and all other information relevant to our stay. When booking, we were unaware of the bookable private hotsprings (outdoor / jaccuzi ), so it was a pleasant surprise when our guide advised us that we could book each of them for 40 minutes free of charge as part of our stay. I have stayed in 5 star hotels, and I would say the service was comparable. We stayed in the traditional Japanese Room with the private onsen bath. The room was clean, and tidy, and very cozy and comfortable. The experience felt very traditional Japanese, which is exactly what we were looking for in a Ryokan. Our room had a view of the river outside, and you could hear the sounds of nature and water flowing. The entire Sagasawakan Inn was surprisingly larger than expected, and there were atleast 5 other public onsens, in conjunction with the 2 private bookable ones. There are many places to relax in the ryokan in the common areas, with amazing natural views. The Gift Shop was also quite extensive. As part of our stay, we chose the kaiseki dinner and breakfast package, and it was an amazing dinner. The quality of food, variety and the amount all were outstanding. Comparable to Michelin star set courses I have had previously. Dinner was served in a private dining room with me and my partner. There were multiple courses which were all perfectly explained to us, and it was a great experience. We enjoyed the extensive amount of seafood served at dinner, but there were some things that i can understand less adventurous people may not enjoy so much. All the food was fresh and of excellent quality. Prior to checkout we were advised of thier free shuttle bus back to the station.

Perfect Ending to A Trip to JapanMy boyfriend and I visited Sagasawakan for three nights and had the most magnificent stay. The warm service and meticulous attention to detail went above and beyond our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we knew the reviews of this place do not do it justice. We stayed in the Western-style room with private onsen and we highly recommend it. The meals here were exquisite and in many cases, better than $200 omakase experiences in Kyoto and Tokyo. Although most of the staff do not speak English, this was no problem at all and we were able to effectively communicate. On our last day, it was raining as we were planning to leave to catch the bus to the train station. Despite the fact that we left an hour before the complimentary daily shuttle bus, the manager insisted we be driven in her personal car to the train station to avoid getting wet. She even gave us an umbrella to take. I cannot recommend this hotel enough - we will definitely be back if we ever return to Japan!
