    Terrible. Don't even consider it.

I signed a 6-month lease with this establishment, and a week into the lease, construction on a four-building complex was initiated. The site had set up lights so that work could go on day and night, 7 days a week. Because my work is so demanding, I honored my lease up through month three when some free time came available. I told the owner why I was leaving--the noise and construction--and she agreed there was nothing to do about it but find another place. Regardless, I was penalized 6,700 baht (more than $200) for leaving before my lease expired. 700 baht was for cleaning, 3,000 baht was for the three months left on the lease, and I was assessed 3,000 baht for three nights beyond my third month. The nights were not even prorated according to the terms of the lease. The serviced apartment neighbors student apartments for CMU students. There are several small bars in the area, and the music and loud talking continues well past 2-3 am both weekends and weeknights. I spoke with an individual knowledgeable about the construction going on next door, and he assured me that construction would continue for two years. The complexes are 6 stories high, and they will block the view from the view rooms at Su-ang Malee. If this isn't bad enough, the apartment, which did not cater to students in the past because of the noise they create, I have on good authority, will be allowing students to live in the complex. As you may know, students live 2-4 to a studio room. The complex will be an anthill. A very noisy anthill. The establishment also has a laundry service. But they can take up to three weeks to deliver you laundry. Across the parking lot is a much better, faster, and cheaper alternative. There were other issues with service, the main one being the inability of the staff to comprehend English. They will say yes to just about anything, and it won't be done because they don't really understand the question. Or perhaps it's because they don't really care. I've stayed at many places in Thailand, and though this is commonplace, I would say the latter holds true for this hotel. The hotel is very, very far from the city, too, located at the end of Suthep Road. If you are not working at the university and are coming for vacation, I would suggest something near Thapae Gate. Even though it's touristy, there are plenty of authentic Thai establishments in the area which would satisfy even a seasoned traveller. And while they understand English, they understand westerners better in that area. Hence, they can service you better. The internet is free, and although they have LAN lines in the rooms, it often goes down for hours at a time. The complex is large, so peak hours the internet is basically unusable. Su-aung Malee also advertises a restaurant and Thai massage services. Neither is available. Stay away. There are much better, cheaper alternatives.

    not worth it.

price should be around 2-300baht. made reservation with hotels.com 2 times 1st time is fine but not this one. when i got there with confirmation from hotels.com they said they didn't have it. i paid cash and stayed. next day i call hotels.com, they said they called the hotel but no response and will call back in 72 hrs. next 3 days i called again, they still said the same thing. seem like i need to dispute credit card charging instead of calling hotels.com. No more reservation through hotels.com, too many hassles

good place for a long-term stay

I lived at Sanguan Malee for nearly two years while I was working at CMU. I had one of the "suites" on the top floor, facing east, with a nice view of trees (monastery grounds.) The rooms were spacious and very functional -- except its frustrating to not be able to cook at all (just a microwave/ hot water heater and sink.) It was remarkably quiet place for such a studenty area! The owners and the manager, Khun Pat, are all good people and they run a professional operation. I found that everyone's English skills were quite good -- unlike some places in Chiang Mai. However, they also are happy if you make an effort to speak some Thai. I like the fact that the place caters to all nationalities -- there are some Thai students, and Thai parents who come to visit their kids, as well as visitors from all over the world (Chinese, Japanese, Europeans, Australians (etc). In other words, its not just a "farang ghetto." I was paying 10,000 Baht/ month, which is a bit high for CM , especially for a place without a pool. You can rent a house for less than that. But I appreciated the convenience of a furnished and secure place and some cleaning service.(Supposed to be 2x month cleaning but in practice it worked out to about 3 times avery 2 months, due to difficulties scheduling.) Also good wifi situation. In all, its a good unpretentious place, very convenient for CMU faculty. It was easy to feel at home there.

Great deal in Local Chiang Mai

Located off a soi in Suthep (the university area in CM), this place has perfect real estate for the best local food Chiang Mai has to offer. The rooms are simple, with a hard pillow (you can ask for a soft one), but working AC and hot/powerful shower. If you want to see Thailand like a local, stay here.

    A Pleasant, Inexpensive Stay

My brother is studying at Chiang Mai University, so I chose to stay at this inexpensive hotel near his dormitory. While this hotel is not too fancy, the staff is kind and my room was spacious and very clean. The beds weren't so comfortable, but the view was lovely. I'd recommend for a brief stay or if you're visiting and/or are a student.
