A Gem of a ryokan experienceWe stayed in the Ryokan for two nights from 6-8 June. The experience was amazing. Although we couldn't speak much Japanese, the staff made us feel welcome and the food served was plentiful and of very good quality. Special mention goes to the bubbly middle-aged lady and the 75 year old granny who brought us dinner on both nights. You are such a delight to the guests. It is also with a tinge of sadness that I write this as we read about the heavy storms and floods that have affected the Okayama region. We hope you are well and we think of you and wish you good health and good cheer.

Must try their lunchTheir "Tai Chazuke" (Snapper on rice dipped in tea) is sooooo tasty. I've tried many, different type of "Chazuke" in my whole life, but this one is surely 5 . It costs 1600@dish, but it's worth what you'd pay.

Ryokan experience! We lived in Japan for over 6 years, and traveled quite a bit. However, in those days, it was minshukus and hostels. Now, 40 years later, we are living it up! The breakfast and dinner atTsurugata are unique each day and are composed of many small portions of uncommon Japanese fare. Even if you don't like 3 or 4 items, you will still be way full when it's over! While 80% of the food was A.M.A.Z.IN.G, there were only 2 kinds of sashimi (hiragai, mebara) that were as tender as you would expect. Those 2 were perfect. The other 80% of the sashimi was just lousy!, IMHO. Couldn't even chew it. Can't imagine why so much of the sashimi was so horrible. The veggie preparations and many versions of tofu and yuba (my fav) were fabulous. Various preparations of cooked fish were excellent. They presented different styles of food each evening. Morning, too. Our room was great. Private toilet. All amenities. Hot & cold water, Ocha and snack each day when you return to the room. Frig. Safe. Great view. Windows all open for fresh air. Tsurugata has a well-trained staff, friendly and always reminding you if you 1. Leave your slippers facing the wrong direction 2. We were clearly told that we must always wear their slippers though no disinfectant was used between people. 3. I walked halfway down to the very nice, large "ofuro" to take a bath (dutifully, carrying the cute woven basket with supplies) only to be turned around and sent back up to change into a yukata for the 3 sec. walk to the bathing room. 4. There was no option to bathe with my husband which many ryokans offer. 5. Our Japanese was good enough to deal with the staff and other issues, but nobody could speak anything other than Japanese, and we saw other guests very confused about a lot of things.I would recommend Tsurugata if you have $350US/ night to spend for a couple and like being waited on, even as you are sometimes being scolded! However, there are scads of great restaurants within a few blocks. And they looked yummy. Staying in Bikan, however, is a must. At night, it's like a fairytale. Mesmerizing. ALl in all, next time, I'll stay in ryokan with no meals, and eat when and what I choose.

I love this Ryokan, highly recommend. This was a very lovely Ryokan located just next to the canal in the historic town of Kurashiki. We reserved the car park and we drove there. The road was very narrow and so make sure you rent a smaller car as you will not able to turn into the car park. Which is behind the hotel. The town was very charming and it was like going back to 300 years ago when the hotel was built. We had the room that comes with a bath and toilet and also they have reserved a private bath for us to use all the time. Dinner was served in the room and using local delicacies and we could not be more happy. Breakfast also was lovely japanese style breakfast . What we loved was also the hospitality of the hotel. We will definitely come back again.
