    Lovely Onsen & Ryokan

From the moment we arrived, the attentive staff was flawlessly gracious and professional. Our room was very large and nicely appointed. The private baths were available on both occasions that we visited them. The separate male and female baths offer excellent views of the surrounding hills. The meals are very generous and interesting. The property's gardens are beautiful. The walk into town is easy. We were not inconvenienced by not having a shower or bath in our room, though it would have been a nice option.

    Birthday trip 2018

Trip 9th to 14th Nov, Yufu, Beppu and Hakata. First night staying at Hotel Baien. Late check in at 7:15pm due to highway bus fully booked until 5:00pm. Once check in, we were brought to the dinning floor! (They know us..... we are starving!). Dinner was so nice! Around 9:00pm, finished our dinner, we were shown to the facilities (hot spring area) and our room (Japanese Style)! Service 100% excellent! Meal 100% Baien Style! This is a 100% top onsen hotel in Yufu.

Worst experience amongst the 6 Ryokans I stayed in Kyushu during this trip

Strike one - our package allowed us early check-in at 1400 but the staff was not attentive and told us the standard check in time of 1500. We had arrived around 1230 and again I enquirers if it was possible to check in earlier, and the response was possibly 1430. Final strike - This place has a ridiculous policy of charging 300yen for every replacement towel. When we explained to the front desk staff that our towels were wet and we wanted fresh ones, they said we could use the small towelettes to dry ourselves and reiterated that it was the rule to charge 300yen for each fresh towel requested. At this point, my stay was spoilt and felt that we were staying in a budget hotel.

Nice Ryokan with superb outdoor onsen

This is my second time to this ryokan. My family of 4 visited this ryokan in July 2019 and stayed for 2 nights. The room was spacious, with 2 western style beds and 2 tatami beds. The dinner was with excellent quality, seafood and beef. My son has seafood and nuts allergy and requested special meals well in advance during booking. The ryokan was very attentive and prepared for him special meals with beef, different vegetables, pork, duck and chicken meats. The breakfast was also great. Different types of juices and coffee were offered and were self-served. Baien was near the mountain area and the air was really refreshing. The outdoor public onsen was superb, with nice mountain view and was large enough to serve many. The service was great and friendly. Some tips: taxi fare from Yufuin JR station to Baien was 700Yen. It only took about 15 minutes walk from Baien Ryokan to the popular lake area and the touristic streets of Yufuin. Definitely will stay again in future.

    Authentic......but

We had a confirmed reservation here for three nights on our travel documents. When we booked in they had two nights. It was our travel companies fault. The staff, especially Morachi? Were very helpful, and managed to get us the third night down the road. Anything else would have been a disaster. Room wise it was lovely, Japanese style, but due to the wood, very noisy, and we had to pull our mattresss into the living room to get some sleep. Breakfast Japanese style was amazing. Onsen was an experience well worth doing.
