Great service, Comfortable, Good size room but a little old fashionedFirst of all the staff were fantastic and very helpful. They went out of thier way to help us when we arrived later than expected and had very little time before our pre booked dinner booking. They arranged to store our bags and called a taxi for us very quickly. I could not fault the staff as they were friendly and helpful. However I will make one (very) small comment that there was only 1 staff member who had good English skills during our stay and the others spoke little or no English. But I have little or no Japanese language skills and this hotel did seem to be catering more for Japanese travelers and business men rather than tourists from overseas so as I said it is a very small comment. Fortunately my partner is Japanese and so I let her do all the talking and all went well. We visited Kyoto in the first week of April 2015 during one of the busiest weeks of the year. Therefore given the timing of our stay at this hotel we could not really complain about the reasonably high price (we paid JPY29000 for 2 people). However we booked on a special package rate that included dinner at a very nice local restaurant and breakfast at the hotel so I think we got good value for money. I would guess that the excellent authentic Japanese dinner that we enjoyed at an incredible local restaurant was probably worth almost half the price that we paid so that probably makes the hotel room cost much more reasonable when taken into account. The room was quite large when compared to nearly all other hotels we stayed at in Japan. However there were no double rooms left when we booked and so we had to stay in a twin room. This in itself was not too bad as we were only staying for one night. The rooms were clean and tidy and had all the basic amenities. However they were what I would call very old fashioned and the furniture was from another age in the past. But it was all functional and worked as required. We were comfortable and could not complain. With regards to the location of the hotel it looks fairly central on the map but it was really not that convenient as it was a long way from the nearest underground station (Marutamachi). However there are bus stops close by the hotel and taxis often drove past on the main street out front of the hotel. I would not suggest walking from Marutamachi station to the hotel unless you enjoy long walks and have wheeled bags (it is further than it looks on the map). We walked from the station with our large bags as we were told it wasnt too far and would only take about 10mins but that advice turned out to be very wrong as it took us over half an hour. I guess its not that far if you are not carrying bags and are just going out to do some sightseeing. The breakfast at the hotel was quite good and had a good choice of food. But dont expect too many Western dishes. Thats not a complaint though because I wanted to try the local foods wherever I went so I was happy. Can I recomend this hotel? Yes I can. It had the required basic facilities. The staff were fantastic, happy and very helpful. The breakfast food was good. The rooms were a good size. So all in all if you dont mind dated furnishings (ok, very dated furnishings) and you are happy to catch a taxi to the hotel then there is nothing to complain about. I would happily stay at this hotel again though I will watch the price or ensure I get a good package deal like last time.
