Good hotelThe hotel is in a good position a couple of minutes walk from the main road which itself is a couple of minutes from the lake. My room was at the back overlooking the pool with its own balcony (table and chair). The room had a flat screen tv with many channels but the only English speaking one I found was 420 a German channel. The room had tea making facilities but no coffee of milk. The room had everything I needed for a 6 night stay. The restaurant was on the ground floor, breakfast was from 7 am and the evening meal from 7 pm. Breakfast was the usual continental style plus egg and bacon (not the same bacon as in England). The evening meal was multi choice ordered the night before, the meat dish was usually pork. Overall the food was good. There is a small bar area but entertainment was on the night of the Gala dinner only, prices were reasonable and the system was to run up a tab which was paid at the end of your stay. All of the staff I had contact with spoke reasonable English and were good and helpful. Overall a good hotel.

Terrific Hotel and StayWe just arrived back from Riva after spending two weeks at the Hotel Royal. First we would like to comment on our room which was modern, spacious and kept very clean. We were supplied with fresh towels every day, soap, shower gel and body lotion were replenished as needed. Secondly the food was very 'continental' but we liked the variety and quality that was served to us. The dining room staff are attentive and pleasant. Reception staff were engaging and extremely helpful. The only negative side for us what the hotel took dogs! But that apparently it's common in Italy. We only became aware of this after seeing one being walked in through the front door and passed Reception.

Hotel Royal booked as Xmas / New year package with National HolidaysThe hotel as such is clean and comfortable; the staff are friendly and efficient though at times short in number. As a place to stay for a short visit to the area whether on holiday or on business then it is adequate, though the hotel has a rather basic feel about it. Breakfast from the continental buffet was quite acceptable. However, what was sold to us by National Holidays was not simply half board in a basic hotel but a complete Festive package that promised to cater for our every need throughout Xmas and New Year. We were led to expect entertainment and celebrations in keeping with the spirit of the festive period. Our expectations were therefore high. Unfortunately our hopes on the entertainment front were immediately dashed when we realised that the venue was a small area of the bar cleared of chairs and tables to make room for a lone guitar player who was to be our entertainer for the whole of our holiday. Rather elderly with very little to say he appeared on three out of the ten evenings of our stay including New Years Eve. On the other seven evenings there was nothing so guests were left to their own devices and because the bar had insufficient seating many spent their evenings elsewhere. The same is true during the days when those who declined to go on the coach excursions (four of which were at extra cost) were provided with nothing but an empty bar to sit in. Lunch was not available leaving no option but to seek a cafe or another hotel many of which were closed. Before again offering a "festive package at the Royal Hotel National Holidays should review their description bearing in mind the following points :- The hotel is too small as a place of entertainment. Xmas and New Year revellers expect sufficient space to sit and to dance. A single third rate musician does not meet peoples expectations of festive entertainment. The meals generally were of limited choice. Bland, lukewarm and served in very small portions. Even the so called Gala Dinners were little better. Several guests left the dining room early on Xmas and New Years Eve expressing their disappointment at the cuisine being served. A feature of the holiday was a visit by coach to a wine merchant where many guests made purchases as festive treats. However they were not happy to be told firmly that the hotel will not allow drinks on the tables other than those purchased at the bar. Such pettiness does nothing to create a Happy Christmas Given that many cafes are closed during the holiday period it would be reasonable to expect the hotel to provide something for lunch even if it is only a snack to be purchased at the bar. The hotel made only a token attempt at creating an atmosphere of celebration and in this they failed miserably. Finally the highest praise is due to the coach drivers David and James whose professionalism and friendliness saved this holiday from being a complete disaster.
