A great nook in OhioPassing through the quaint town of Findlay, Ohio we discovered a hidden treasure called Rose Gate Cottage Bed and Breakfast. On a spur of the moment decision to stay in Findlay for the night, we picked the most romantic place, or maybe it picked us. Innkeepers Belinda and John are warm and friendly and provide very comfortable accommodations. Be sure to pick up a copy of The Old Rugged Cross, enjoy the decor, take a relaxing soak in the large tub, and enjoy the Apple Puff breakfast treat. A great way to wrap up our vacation and have to prepare for heading back to work.

Three disappointments and you're out!I have waited to write this review to see if I would feel better about our experience after some time passed but I'm still just as mystified as when we stayed in March. We have stayed at the Rose Gate Cottage twice in the past so we were happy to be returning a third time. Unfortunately it seems things have changed since the last time we went. When I knocked on the door, John, the innkeeper, opened the door and looked at me like I was a solicitor. I indicated we had reservations for that evening and he left me on the porch while he went to check to see if had indeed contacted him. When he came back he said it was in his book but, since they hadn't had anyone Friday and Saturday (this was a Sunday), he didn't think to look past that. I told him we could find someplace else but he said if we gave him some time he would be able to get our room ready for us. We went to dinner and when we came back all seemed fine. The room was great and we used the double jacuzzi tub. Afterward we watched TV for awhile but after that the second disappointment occurred. Once the tub and TV were off we could hear the TV in the next room blaring - so loud there was no way we could get to sleep. Now, mind you, we had been told nobody was expected for that evening so I figured he must have turned on the TV while making up the room and forgot to turn it off. I decided to see for myself and hopefully turn it off (by this time it was 12:30am). Imagine my surprise when I opened the door (after knocking and getting no response) to see feet at the end of the bed!!!! I believe it must have been a hard of hearing elderly parent that now uses that room and they fell asleep while watching TV. Finally about 2:00am it was turned off so we were able to get some sleep. Now for the third disappointment. We were up early the next morning as John had told us after we got back from dinner the previous night that he had to work the next morning and breakfast had to be early. Breakfasts in the past have not been feasts but they were quite tasty and plentiful enough. John asked what kind of fruit we wanted - our "choices" were half a grapefruit or he could open a can of peaches. While waiting for breakfast we heard the microwave turn on a couple of times. I figured he was warming up muffins for us. How silly. When he came in the dining room he had two plates, each with a scrambled egg (all dolled up with parsley), two microwaved sausage links, and one slice of toast. He asked if we would like jelly and brought a tiny bit and asked if it was enough. Now, we have been to dozens of B&Bs and have never experienced anything like this. As I said in the beginning, I have waited to write a review but I want others to know that Rose Gate Cottage is not what we had experienced in the past. In fairness, I did not mention our disappointment with the TV or breakfast to John, but would have if asked. Nothing about "How was your sleep?, "How is your breakfast?" Needless to say, they have lost a customer and, instead of bragging about what a great place they have for a reasonable price, we are telling a much more entertaining story of what not to do as an innkeeper.

A klutzy innkeeperAfter looking forward to our stay at Rose Gate Cottage, my wife and I ended up with a negative experience similar to another reviewer here. We weren't kept waiting outside the door like the other guy, but we WERE left standing in the hall holding our bags for about 20 minutes while John, the innkeeper, told us about his divorce, his new girlfriend, and his disinfatuation with being an innkeeper -- all instead of showing us to our room. We were pretty tired after a big day of driving and were anxious to settle in, but he seemed pretty unaware of this possibility. On the way upstairs to our room, I spotted a dish of hard candies on the table, grabbed one of them and popped it in my mouth, learning immediately that what I had on my tongue was something that wasn't supposed to be eaten. We later decided it was some sort of hard-candy-like potpourri that was being served in a candy dish. It took a long time before I could flush the nasty taste out of my mouth. That night's sleep was rough. Our bed was angled into the corner, leaving one side of the bed about eight inches from the air conditioner at about rib height. It was so close that when it cycled on, the person on that side of the bed froze despite the covers, but when we tried turning it off, the room became stifling in the summer heat. My wife unwittingly started the night on that side of the bed, but after being tortured by the air conditioner for a few hours, we switched sides and I paid my dues for the rest of the night. We had great expectations for breakfast the next morning. John had told us that he and his new girlfriend were having a competition to see who could outdo the other with their sumptuous meals. His entry in the competition proved to be some sort of vague-tasting baked dish flanked by a trio of grapes. It wasn't very good but fortunately there wasn't much of it to deal with. Plus, the whole time we ate he stood there and told us about his childhood, his elderly parents, and on and on. My wife and I were never able to contribute to this conversation, let alone talk to each other. Finally, as he was clearing the table, he asked us something. What did we have planned for the day? When I told him about the Fairgrounds event that had brought us to Findlay, he expressed his disapproval and said he had some other ideas that we might like better. It was about then that I told him about my experience with the "hard candy" the night before. I tried to make it sort of amusing, which it was of course, but also made the point that he was sort of setting up his guests by displaying something that looked like candy in a candy dish right where every guest would be passing by. He got the part about it being sort of funny but missed the larger point. Certainly there was nothing resembling an apology, and I noticed that the candy dish was still there when we checked out. I can't really dig anything good out of our experience at the Rose Gate. If you have a bad night's sleep, a poor and insufficient breakfast, a social interaction that's all about the innkeeper and then throw in disparaging words about the activity you'd come to town for, there's really not too much left. Literally and figuratively, Rose Gate left a bad taste in my mouth.

Two Miserable NightsMy wife and I stayed at Rose Gate Cottage for two miserable nights. We stayed in the first room to the left at the top of the stairs. After being shown to our room we got unpacked and decided to walk downtown for lunch. When we returned several hours later we noticed that the room directly across from us had the TV blaring loudly. I laid down on the bed to rest a bit while my wife got ready to see relatives in the afternoon/evening. I immediately noticed how uncomfortable the bed was. The bed was situated at an angle in the room and the window air conditioner was a foot or less from the bed, blowing at bed level. The head of the bed was higher than the foot and the mattress sank in the middle. The pillows were hard and flat. When we left for the evening the TV was still blaring, and when we came back around 10pm, still blaring. It went on into the wee hours of the morning. Between the TV, uncomfortable bed, and A/C blowing on us, we spent a sleepless night. We spent time with relatives most of the next day and when we came home that afternoon, the bed had not been made up. We also noticed the smell of cigarette smoke that came from the room across from us, even though there was a no smoking sign at the inn. We spent that evening with relatives again. John, the innkeeper, was not at the inn that night. When we came back to the inn we started up the stairs to the room and noticed that the TV was not blaring. However, as we got close to the top of the stairs, we heard the door to the room across from our room, where the noise and smoke came from, open. As we got to the top of the stairs, there was a man standing in the doorway of the room in just his boxer shorts and holding a beer. When I looked him in the face, he stepped back into the room and shut the door. Our bed had still not been made up. Needless to say we spent another sleepless night. We mentioned the man and the smoke to John at breakfast. He said that the man was his 'regular renter', and that he had "told him about that before". Not sure if he meant the smoking or the displaying himself in his underwear. We can only surmise that the previous night the man had passed out and left the TV on. In an old house like Rose Gate, drinking and smoking is not a good idea. If we ever come to Findlay again, we will not be staying at Rose Gate Inn.
