Wow a place unlike any other

Hotel auf der Wartburg is really a special place. The old-world style and location right next to the Wartburg castle make this hotel something out of the ordinary. We had splashed out and booked a junior suite. We got room no. 304 right up under the roof. A very big room, old-world, very cosy, and with views on two sides three sides really, if you count the bathroom. The bathroom was huge and also in an old-fashioned romantic style but with all the facilities you can expect in a 5-star hotel. Huge mirrors, two sinks, separate bathtub and shower. Great bathroom! We did not have a view of the Wartburg castle but the views over the large expanse of the Thuringer forest were stunning. The whole building is gorgeous, inside and outside. The lounge area is very impressive, the restaurant looks very nice too with great views, and from the courtyard you look right up at the Wartburg castle. You can park your car below the hotel, and a shuttle (minivan) will bring you and the luggage up the hotel. Likewise when you are leaving. This worked fine. The breakfast was good (particularly the juice, the fruit, and the bread) and it was especially nice to have it in the courtyard. We had dinner in the restaurant (Landgrafenstube) both nights of our stay (there is nothing else around so this is really the only option, unless you want to drive to Eisenach). The restaurant is beautiful and the views are stunning (you can see the most wonderful sunsets from it, particularly from the winter garden section). The food was nice, but not spectacularly so we had expected a little bit more of a 5-five star hotel but enjoyable nonetheless. Curiously, they had decided to show the guests the menu on a blackboard that they moved around. This meant that only one, perhaps two tables at the most, could look at the menu at the same time. So you had to wait some time before you could look at the menu not to mention order the food. Also, we felt a little pressurized to hurry up looking over the menu in this fashion it would have been nicer to have a printed menu that you could peruse at your leisure. We were really not sure why they chose to do it in this way. The location is fabulous right next to the castle. It's right next door, and you can go there early in the morning and in the evening after the crowds have gone. We did this both mornings and evenings and it was lovely. There is nothing else around so I can't imagine staying for more than 2, maybe 3 nights at the most. But we thoroughly enjoyed two nights at the Wartburg it was a really special stay.

Do not come with a car, or be prepared for a lecture

I speak German fluently and I have lived in Germany for 8 years. We drove by car, stopping 2/3 of the way up the hill at the traffic circle to ask the guard how we should proceed to the hotel. He told us just to press the button and the gate would be raised. We did so, the gate raised and we drove in. Arriving at the hotel at the top an employee ran out of the hotel, shouting at the top of his voice and berated us for several moments because we had pushed the button, but not waited to hear the instructions. We replied that we heard no voice and the gate had raised, so we proceeded. "Oh, that is because you didn't wait, you rushed through while the taxi was coming down," he replied. We were supposed to have gotten instructions to wait to park way below the hotel. We replied that we could not carry our luggage up the hill and he said they would have sent a bus to get it. Then, we entered the hotel and were lectured in the main public lobby for ten minutes by a very angry receptionist because we "had not waited for them to give us instructions." Both the man and the woman spoke to us in angry loud voices. It became frightening to see two such out of control people. We ended up staying because our goals was to tour the Wartburg castle. We could not open the windows because bats would fly into the room. The food was very poor in quality and in tiny portions. It was asparagus season and my asparagus dish was not even one stalk, only shavings off one stalk. The Wartburg castle is beautiful and historically important, but do plan to stay in the town of Eisenach, rather than at the adjacent hotel on the top.

Phantastic views, excellent service, worth the money

We spent 3 amazing days at this historical place, we got a single room and a superior corner suite, from the ladder with the most stunning panoramic views overlooking the Thuringian Forest. Quaint hotel, cozy rooms. Loved the free bottled mineral water offered at the room, and from the usual suspects major brands, but coming eco-friendly in a snap-on-lid glass bottle, bottled from the hotel's own spring. This added a nice local touch to the experience, and is kind of special for this particular place. Wished more luxury hotels would adopt this idea. The breakfast was outstanding great as well, plenty to choose from. And also here we esp. loved the fact, that the very tasty cold cuts, bread and rolls coming from local traditional butcher and bakery shop in town, supporting small traditional local business, and adding a local touch. The Hotel was the best place to stay not only for extended hiking the surrounding nature, but also strolling around the castle walls during sunrise or around sunset, enjoying the silence of the still or already absent crowds of the day. Also a plus was the proximity to the castles historic ceremonial hall, were we enjoyed an evening concert, with just a few steps to walk from the hotel in festive ropes. Would love to return at any time.
