One Week in Robinson Club Camyuva

Due to some organisational issues my wife and I found ourselves having to book a holiday at short notice and decided upon Robinson Club Camyuva. For the benefit of anyone not familiar with the concept of a club vacation, the basic idea is that the guest spends all (or, at least, the vast majority) of their time within the bounds of the club. Food and beverages (including a basic range of alcoholic drinks) are provided as part of an all inclusive package as are an extensive range of sporting and leisure activities. The dining and bar areas are designed to specifically encourage contact between guests and there is often some kind of evening entertainment. At least based on our friends and acquaintances, club vacations seem to be one of those things that people either love or hate (although the most critical neither have, nor ever would, set foot in a club!). My only previous experience of a club vacation was 30 years ago as a late 20 something where the ethos was luxury hippy and most of the people spoke French. My wife had never been on a club holiday so was a bit nonplussed at this description. However, I assured her that despite initial reservations and only a smattering of French, I had enjoyed myself immensely. It was still with a degree of trepidation that we set off. But we could not have been more pleasantly surprised. Check in - Due to poor weather our flight to Antalya was delayed and we did not arrive in Camyuva until the early hours of the morning. But reception was waiting for us and a porter took us to our room. Room - We were impressed with the room. Not because it was particularly luxurious (it wasnt) but due to its functionality. The room had a walk in wardrobe which was large enough for all of our stuff and a second balcony which was great for drying out sports cloths. We also liked the separate shower and WC. There were mosquito net blinds meaning we could sleep with the windows open and for when we wanted it air-con. There were ample power sockets in the room. Critical to modern survival(!), there was WLAN coverage (inclusive) not just in the room but across the entire club. And for anyone who didnt have a phone/tablet/lap top, the TV picked up all of the major German channels. Club Grounds I have visited a number of resort hotels throughout the world. I do not think that by any stretch of the imagination one could describe Camyuva as being particularly exclusive by todays standards.. I understand it was built in the 1980s and it is fair to say it shows it age. That said, the grounds are immaculately kept. Catering We found the food excellent. I do not know how often menus are repeated but for the eight nights we were there the food was different each evening. There was basically a non-stop supply with snacks being available outside of the main meal times. The main dining area served mainly international food with Turkish salads and desserts. There was also a speciality Turkish restaurant where we particularly enjoyed the roast lamb. Dining is on a buffet basis with a wide selection of dishes. Obviously, everyone has their own tastes regarding food but what we found good was that the paleo, low carb, vegan, gluten free, deep fried and probably most other contingents all seemed to be catered for. Other guests - We were a little concerned about the age profile of the other guests. This is billed as a party club and we thought that as late 50 somethings we might have been a bit long in the tooth. But not a bit of it (or least thats what we think!). Guests appeared to be from their late 20s to into their 60s and seemed to get on fine. Admittedly, we did not actually once visit the night club, deciding to have early nights at around midnight after a couple of drinks and small talk with other guests. Sport/leisure activities Here the available range is extensive and the sports crew very motivational. We particularly liked the indoor cycling (although indoor is something of a misnomer given the open air venue with a view of the sea). And the functional game training was brutal! There is a diving centre within the club (at extra cost) which I also liked many thanks to the crew for a good dive at Three Islands. Just a couple of thoughts regarding sports. My guess is the extensive provision of tennis courts date from the Becker/Graf era when everyone in Germany tried to play tennis. I did not see more than a couple of tennis courts being used at anyone time. How about giving some thought to an open-air crossfit box on one of the tennis courts? Also, the running track around the camp is not quite the claimed 1.2km according to my GPS watch (makes a difference after 8 laps!). Language Guests were, I would guess, 90% German speakers. The sports instructors were mainly German/Austrians and most of the other staff German speaking Turkish. All were extremely friendly but in no way overbearing. We chatted to a Turkish couple who only spoke English and they claimed to be happy enough in a German speaking environment (in fact, they claimed it was their reason for being there). However, I think non-German (or Turkish) speakers will not get the best out of a vacation in Camyuva. Downsides - Loud techno music from both the neighbouring hotel and pleasure boats which pass by. The guests in the other hotels on this bit of coastline are nearly all Russians and mainly families with kids. I cannot imagine they are aficionados of mega-decibel techno so it beats me what its all about. The other thing is there is not much to do outside of the club. We strayed outside for a walk but returned very quickly not because anything bad happened to us but there is nothing much other than some tatty shops and a derelict amusement park. We also went to the nearby town of Kemer which is pleasant enough for half a day.

Great, but takes a little getting used to

Let me start of by saying that this was a bit of an experiment for me, since the Dutch arent really known for Club Urlaube and I am usually a bit more adventurous. But since I was looking for a place where I could do sports, enjoy good food and maybe do some dancing, I ended up booking the Robinson Club Camyuva for 5 nights. It was quite an experience, and hopefully without boring the reader, I will try to sum up all the pros and cons (in my humble opinion of course). Pros: - Wonderful location with enough sun beds on the beach and around the pool (which I didnt use once, since the seawater is just lovely in July). - Perfect sports program that fit all my needs. - Very friendly staff and especially Robins who sincerely seem to enjoy talking to the guests and having fun with them. - Incredible food; more than one could wish for. Lots of variation and enough healthy options to stay in shape while doing your sports program. - Entertainment program thought through very well and lots of eye for detail. The restaurant changes looks according to the theme and on Turkish night, dinner and entertainment is along the beach. - Options for dancing every evening and if you have a quiet room (which I asked for and got in the 400 block), you can escape the noise if you wish to do so. - Overall friendly and non obnoxious guests who mingle easily. Cons - The mingling also has a con. Since there are only large tables for 8 (some for 6), you always sit together with other guests at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of course this will help you get in touch with people when you travel alone (like I did), but at the same time there is no way to escape the social interaction. Forced to socialize, you can feel a bit lost when you first get there, because it can seem that many people know each other already. - As a matter of fact that is actually the case, since many guests have been coming there for years and know each other. Because of this, the real solo traveler is somewhat of a different species at the Robinson Club Camyuva, since most solo travelers might go there alone, however are welcomed by their social warm bath once they get there. As a first-timer you do indeed feel like an outsider at first and if you have some challenges socializing, you might have difficulty finding a group to be part of. The club does organize single/solo traveler gatherings every evening at the bar, so thats nice if you need some help getting in contact with others. Doing sports, especially volleyball, will help you with this also! - The party aspect of the club is good and you can dance every night. The music is ok, however in my opinion there needs to be more variation in music styles. Also, after a couple of nights it gets a bit boring that the same playlist seems to be played over and over. I have heard many guests complain about this aspect and also read it in the reviews before I went. I feel the club does have some work to do there. - My biggest con is the fact that many people (of all age groups) really seem to be there, not only to let their hair down and have some fun, but to hook up with other guests as fast and even as much as possible. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable interacting with men, because quite a few did indeed seem to have a different agenda than I did. I wasnt harrassed or anything, but when so many people around you are on the hunt, the vibe definitely changes. If you dont want to be bugged a lot, make sure you have some people of the opposite sex to hang out with. In my case I ended up with a very nice and chill group of people (men and women) who knew each other from before, which gave me sort of a dont hit on me shield ;) If you are of course interested in something more than social mingling, you are definitely in the right place. - One last con is the fact that I couldnt get a catamaran with my 2 yacht sailing diplomas. Only after I would have taken a private lesson of 150,- where I could have proven my sailing skills, I would have been able to take out a catamaran alone. The price to me is truly augmented and I ended up skipping the sailing, which was a bit of a disappointment. All in all a great 5 days. If I would go again, I would definitely make sure I would either go with a friend or make arrangements in the same period my newly acquired Klicke would go; that does definitely make a difference.

    Nice and relaxing

Good hotel with well managed and maintained facilities and friendly staff. Lots of sports activities. We had pleasant and relaxing time. But Non-german speaking guests should bear in mind that everything in this hotel is tailored for the germans be it the food, drinks and entertainment.
