  High end, yet approachable & relaxing luxury

  A clean, modern hotel, with beautiful amenities, this is a true retreat. Nestled on the river, it is far from town - so dont expect to venture too far from the property. The restaurants are both supremely delicious, yet approachable. This is the kind of place you can hole up in for a few days and let go of your cares.

  Outstanding

  Weve stayed at a number of onsen hotels and ryokans over the years and this is one of the best. We had a small incident with our rental car and the staff went above and beyond their call of duty to help us resolve it. One gets used to high service standards in Japan but the staff here takes it to another level. The hotel design is excellent and well thought out. The only reason why I wouldnt say it is the best is that their Japanese restaurant serves modern Japanese style meals. (We didnt try the French restaurant.) By modern Japanese style, I mean the food is beautifully presented with some fusion/creative twists. Its a matter of personal taste but we like traditional Japanese dinners at ryokans with a lot of fresh seafood and nabe/shabu shabu meat dishes. Japanese style breakfast was amazing though. Overall, nothing to fault River Retreat Garaku. I wouldnt hesitate to stay here again if Im in the region.

  Beautiful petite hotel in suburb Toyama

  Located outer-skirt of Toyama city, this hotel is sitting along side a quiet river of The Jinzu. Not a convenient place for train travelers, so better go by car (taxi, rent-a-car, etc.). Some rooms have private bath-tubs (some have hot spring in it), in addition to the big hot spring bath facilities. There are some restaurants inside: French, Japanese, and a cafe (with a souvenir shop). Beautiful in winter especially when covered by snow. Not very reasonable, but if you can, choose this hotel for a luxurious 2-day experience.

  First visit with couple friend

  Very relaxing quiet place. Ideal to just, sit, eat and view and do nothing. Surrounded by greenery and cosy ambience. Building from outside is rather grey and concrete feeling. But inside the atmosphere is nice. Didnt see guests until breakfast next day and few families with young children. Mostly ladies here for quiet visit. Good food and service.

  Quiet riverside inn

  Built along a narrow reservoir is a quiet hotel-style inn. Architecture is unfinished concrete exterior/interior (like Ando Tadao style). Lots of original art, including many top Japanese artists. Unbelievable stereo in the lobby lounge... Nice onsen indoor/outdoor communal Japanese bath. Spa with heated rock bed. Choice from Japanese or French dining, both highly rated in the region. Quiet area. A nice place to relax for adults. Will likely visit again when in the Toyama area.
