Pamper yourself in private breathtaking luxury...This hidden gem is one of our top highlights of our month long trip to Jamaica! Located 15min from Negril on a private bay surrounded by lush beautiful jungle, this place should not be missed. Great easy cab service into town (the 'General' is the best) Spacious comfortable clean rooms. Gorgeous and well maintained grounds filled with old growth bamboo, flowers everywhere,100ft tall palms line the driveway...Several buildings for your choice of location, mood and comfort. Infinity pool with loungers, 3 piers off the beautiful shoreline with amazing snorkeling fun everywhere! The beach has changing area and showers. Staff is friendly honest hardworking and felt like family. A heartfelt thanks to Marcelle, Jefferson, Mutah, and all the wonderful cleaning ladies and happy hardworking garden crew...and security whom we never met but knew was always there... This resort is not all inclusive - so come prepared with your own food and drinks. There is a bar and breakfast is served in a unique open building design on a little hill with a great view. Thanks chef Danby...and dinner could always be negotiated in advance as everyone is very accomodating. It has taken a beating from storms over the years but current renos and upkeep are well done and they are continuing. There is plenty of space, a wall of books for borrowing, crocodile farm, horsebackriding, an excellent masseuse available (Benjamin is the best!!) nature walks, caves and other hidden treasures... - Jefferson can set you up with anything you need to help you truly enjoy your vacation! So, if you want to be pampered by others this is not the place for you...if you want unbelievable private luxury and the option to eat drink and do as you please when you please, then this is the pamper yourself place to be! We will be back as soon as possible...

DisappointingFirst, a couple of caveats: (1) we came to this resort primarily because it was reported to have good snorkeling; and (2) we were there during the off season, so conditions may be different during the busy season. Snorkeling: We covered most of the bay. The snorkeling at this resort was very bad. The snorkeling off the Sunscape resort in Montego Bay is much better than it is here. There were very few fish and no big fish. We did see a couple of small eagle rays. Most of the coral was dead. Live coral ranged from 0 to 50 percent in various areas of the reefs. There were very few areas that came anywhere near 50%. There is a mini wall about 200 yards out and to the left of the resort where the coral was almost all dead. There is a spur and groove reef out to the right of the resort that has the most live coral. Even though the bay is a National Marine Park with no fishing allowed, there was significant fishing going on and no apparent enforcement. The marine park itself is too small to function as a true self-sustaining marine protected area. We saw numerous fish traps while snorkeling and several times we saw people fishing with spear guns. One group of two snorkeling with spear guns had a mesh bag full of small fish (mostly blue tang) and were diving down heedless of kicking the coral and shooting the spears into the reef. This helped explain both the lack of fish and the clumps of fire coral that we saw lying on the bottom. They told us that the fish left for the summer. I never heard of such a thing or experienced it elsewhere. I have a BS and MS in Fisheries Biology and worked for 35 years in water quality protection. We went on their All-Inclusive Nature Lovers Package. It was to include RT transfers, a deluxe room, meals, and a number of side trips. Room: We did not get the room that we booked in the Whytehouse. We were upgraded to the Plum Room on the second floor, NE corner of the Sunshine Building, which was fortunate because it had a kitchenette (see Food). The room was large but pretty basic. The bed was firm but comfortable. There were two night stands, a table and two chairs and a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, sink, coffee maker, and limited dishes and silverware. The room also had a loft with a bed. There was a good sized balcony with an ocean view that had two wicker chairs and a table. There was no dresser or shelves. The air conditioner was either off or on and it got kind of cool at night in the room. The towels and linens were ok. The bathroom was kind of small with a tub/shower. The water pressure was fair and there was plenty of hot water. The maid service was good. However, the maid ate cookies and M&Ms that were on the counter and used my wifes face cream. We were the only ones there for the first part of our stay and the room was quiet. When additional guests checked in, it became much noisier. The pool is close to this room and noise carried to the room. Also, noise and the TV from the adjoining room were loud. I assume that it could be much worse in high season with greater occupancy. No bottled water or toiletries were provided. Food: When we arrived we were informed that the restaurant was closed during low season. There was no previous warning of this. I had even inquired by e-mail a short time prior to our arrival as to whether the restaurant accepted credit cards and they replied that it did. This was a rather unpleasant surprise. They said that the cook would check with us regarding meal choices and then deliver the food to our room. Breakfast offered eggs cooked to order or a cheese omelet (served with toast and fried potatoes), pancakes, or French toast, all served with juice but no coffee. Sometimes there were a few small pieces of fruit. On day they could not do omelets because there was no cheese. Bacon was extra ($3 for 2 small pieces). Lunch was jerk chicken, a hamburger, a hot dog, tuna sandwich, or a peanut butter sandwich. Fortunately we like jerk chicken and we had it every day. Dinner was chicken or fish cooked a couple of different ways with a choice of mashed potatoes, peas and rice, French fries, or coleslaw; or pasta. Sometimes there was a small salad or a couple of pieces of vegetables. They said they would have shrimp on the weekend, but there was no delivery. The Jamaican dishes were good but the choices were very limited and the portions were small. There were no desserts. The lack of variety got boring after a while. The service was prompt during the first part of our stay. However, the service became erratic when more people checked in. I dont think the cook could keep up since he had to both cook and deliver the food. Food arrived anywhere from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after the designated time, which meant that we had to be in the room for this time. We switched a couple of the tours to just buying groceries, water, beer, coffee, and fruit so we could supplement the meals. The refrigerator and microwave came in handy. We did not starve, but it was hardly what I would consider all inclusive. Misc: The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was no Wi-Fi until the last two days (apparently a bad storm previous to our arrival had taken the lines down). There was no Wi-Fi in the room. You could get it by the office. The landscaping was very nice, with lots of flowering plants. The beaches were small and narrow. We did see some wildlife including a variety of birds (3 species of hummingbirds, mockingbirds, doves, jays, a woodpecker, pelicans, herons, and white ibis) crocodiles, and mongoose. There were also chickens and peacocks/peahens roaming the grounds. We did four of the tours: Arawak Cave Tour, Nature Walk, Horse Back Ride, and Snorkel Tour. The Arawak Cave tour was excellent. The other tours were ok except that the Nature Walk was basically an on-foot repeat of the Horseback Ride. They did not do a couple of the activities that were advertised in the brochure as part of the package. I did a separate detailed review of the tours under Things to do. The General, the designated taxi driver for the resort, was great. He picked us up at the airport and stopped to allow us to purchase groceries. He also provided transportation at the resort to the Arawak Cave Tour and to purchase additional groceries. He was very prompt and friendly. He provided transportation for our return trip to the airport. He has a nice van and is a safe driver. We would not go back, primarily because the snorkeling was so bad and the meal arrangement was not what we expected.

A Unique Relaxing Experience!I have been meaning to write this since we came back from our first trip to Rhodes. My husband and I are 59 yo. First, I want to say we had an incredible time! The room, grounds and all the staff were fabulous. This was our 20th trip to Jamaica and we have stayed at all types of places there, from Sandals, to Alfred's Ocean Palace. We are very easy to please. The reason I am writing is because I think there can be some improvement as far as letting guests know what to expect based on occupancy. The negative review before mine is based on expectations not being met. I read all the reviews and felt we knew what to expect. I was wrong. When we got in Friday, I heard some guests ask about the bar not having any beer, and the manager said the driver, General, would take them to get some beer. We were a little concerned when we heard this, but we knew we had a fridge in the room, so we had stocked up on beer and liquor at the grocery store in Montego Bay. I am so glad we did, because for the whole week, there was no bar open at Rhodes! Next was the restaurant/food situation. Once we got it figured out that we HAD to call the chef ahead of time if we wanted to eat there, it was all good. You can't just wander up to the restaurant and order off a menu when you feel like it. Lunch options were limited to sandwich, hot dog or hamburger which we did not want, so we ate lunch every day at Pamela's down the road. If you turn right(heading toward Negril) at the entrance to the resort and walk about 20 minutes, you will hit a small town, where there is a grocery store and a few restaurants. Easy walk on a good road, nice wide shoulder to walk on. Thanks to one of the groundsmen who told us about it. We were literally ONLY people there from Sunday until Friday! So I fully understand that it is not economically feasible to keep a bar open all day staffed with a bartender for just 2 people( and this is the type of info that we should have had before arrival). So we just filled our packable cooler with beer and brought it to the beach every day. No frou-frou drinks this trip. We also bought a big bottle of Ting which is a great mixer for rum. As far as lunch, I would walk up the road every day, hail a route taxi, pop into Pamela's for my to go order and take a route taxi back. I am a 59 year old white woman and felt COMPLETELY safe doing this. You are in a small vehicle with other people. Gave the driver a dollar or 100 Jamaican each way. Super easy and took 30 min total. Totally did NOT mind doing that to be able to eat delicious Jamaican food on the beach every day. Pamela's had curried goat, ackee and saltfish, brown stew liver, etc, and it was all dee-lish! Breakfast was basic, eggs, coffee, pancakes. I thought the snorkeling was fine as well. Water was super clear. We did bring beach shoes but it wasn't that rocky. We ate dinner out twice, once in Negril and once on the cliffs. The chef at Rhodes was talented and sweet and we enjoyed having fresh fish every day. No desserts were available, but we were drinking our dessert. I had to restock our booze midweek, and the grocery store across from Pamela's was well stocked. We even picked up msome small bottles of rum cream to have after dinner. My point is, that I think it would be a good idea to inform guests that the bar may not be open if the resort is not busy. That way people can plan in advance to pick up supplies. We are totally comfortable going down the road to eat off the property but I know there are many people who would not be. The person that wrote the negative review had purchased an AI package, and he was pretty unhappy. I can see why. If he had been fully informed about how it was going to be, he probably would not have left the negative review. As for us, we are flexible, and this trip was one of our favorites. I don't need a Pina Colada to have a good vacation. Room was beautiful and quiet. Super comfy bed and pillows. Loved the sound of the bamboo rustling in the wind. We spent our days relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, drinking, eating curry goat. We did the crocodile tour and mineral muds, which was fun. Every night we pulled the chairs down and laid back and looked at the amazing display of stars, while listening to the sound of the waves. We joked that we felt like we were on our own private island! We both plan to come back to Rhodes in the future. I will be curious to see the difference when there are more people there. However, we fully enjoyed having the place to ourselves ! If you need the blaring music, buffets, and constant entertainment, this is not the place for you.

Best small hotel size affordable price in Negril regionI was there in June for my honeymoon and we had the whole place for ourselves. Ancient plantation, amazing views, most courteous staff. Nice infinity pool, private beaches, horse back riding, trekking with guide if you wish to. Rooms well maintained and we had a private transfer from Montego Bay, we stopped in a grocery store to get food and drinks, the kitchen was ok we managed. There is a small bar on the property but I suggest you bring your own liquor. Security guard at the entrance of the resort 24hrs. Would I go back ? Definitely a nice little gem at affordable price in the Negril region.

Beautiful placeApologies for the late review. Me, my daughter and partner stayed here in April 2018. There was only us and another couple on the complex for our 2 week stay but we ft we had the whole place to ourselves. The beach was beautiful and my daughter loved exploring looking at the different fish and creatures. As we are not the best swimmers we didn't venture to far out snorkelling but did enjoy sea life we did see some rays, star fish and some very colourful small fish. The other couple who stayed did say they came every year and love snorkelling on the reef there and tried to encourage us to swim further out go explore to see more. The rooms are very nice with a basic kitchen but that's all you need. The infinity pool is lovely. The only thing I would recomend that the sun lounger both on the beach and by the pool are updated or cushioned base provided. They look good and are functional but being made of solid wood are not very comfortable. Staff are very friendly and you are provided with a mobile phone on arrival so you can contact the manager, house keeping, cheff and taxi driver asxand when needed. the bar is only open at certain times and the kitchen / restaurant is only open for breakfast. There is a supermarket near by to stock up on drinks, Snacks, things to prepare a basic lunch. You can eat dinner in the resturant but you need to call the chef to plan in advance or ask him at breakfast. There is no menu the chef will explain the choices when you enquire about dinner. The food is really good. We did venture out a lot so did use the taxi driver a lot who is reliable and friendly if he couldn't drop us off or collect us he would arrange for another trusted driver to take us out. The complex offer 2 trips the poney trek and swim and the plantation walk with feeding of the crocodile. Both follow the same route. We did the walk oyr guide was knowledgeable about the plantation and the plants etc... we did see the crocodiles but where unable to walk along the bridge to feed them as it had collapsed into the lake but they explained this would be repaired at the end of season. They didn't charge us for the walk due to this. The pony trek and swim did look fun and rides were on daily. The only thing that I would recommend is that they link up with tour operators so that they can offer guest excursions from the plantation. We booked all our excursions from the Riu while on a day pass. Most things you book or travel to independently such as Ricks etc.. but other's like dolphin swim, dunns river falls etc.. you are best to use a tour operator. This is a gem of a place, your own private beach and pool beautiful views, relaxation then yes its just amazing. But if your after an 'all inclusive' bars open all day, entertainment, buffet meals morning, noon and night this is not for you.
