Simple, no frills accommodation. Great location. So glad we went - loved Valmeinier!!

Booked a late deal with Crystal, and have very few complains given that we only paid £147 each. Room for 6 people - room 1 had bunk beds and wardrobe, room two had two single beds and wardrobe, living room had single sofa bed / pull out bed. Seperate WC and bathroom. All rooms seemed to have a balcony or patio area, and there was a secure ski locker area with no extra charge / deposit for padlocks or keys etc. Basic but functional kitchen. Equipment included coffee perculator, loads of cutlery, pots and pans and a dish washer. Could have done with a microwave, but electric hob and mini oven were sufficient for a week's self catering. No room service. Great base for exploring the area, only about 50m stroll from lift. I booked ski hire on-line with Snow Brainer before travelling (buy 6 days and get 7th free) and got a good discount with Ski Set VI which is literally next door - very handy!! Not many english, but French were very friendly. Lovely bakery, small supermarkets, gift shops and a few resteraunts at Valmeinier 1800 - everything you need. So glad that we went ski guiding with Crystal because we got some great skiing in and managed to cover the whole area. The lift pass was pretty good value at $143 euros because there was plenty of groomed piste to explore, loads of off piste opportunities, speed check run and a couple of snow parks. We went to the Crystal organised fondue evening which was $20 each, at first we though it was a bit expensive, but turned out to be really good value. We had a gorgeous salad starter, cheese fondue with loads of bread and cooked meat selection, and the most tasty blueberry tart I have every tasted (and I am not a blueberry fan!!). The local wine is to die for and you really don't need to splash out because the house wines are scrummy. This resort isn't that well known and is a real gem, lets hope it stay that way!! Wouldn't hesitate to go back. TOP TIP - Try the local produce that the Savoir region has to offer - you will not be disappointed and the fondue is a must try. Take a laptop and some DVD's for cheap entertainment as the TV didn't work and expect it would only be local chanels. If I was being picky the only thing's I would complain about are that the bed wasn't at all comfortable and the transfer was a bit of a pain. We had to go to a coach station and change both ways. Neither of these issues were bad enough to ruin a great weeks skiing!!

Great location and good quality accommodation

We stayed here for a week as part of a group of 6 families with teenage kids. Generally we found the apartments clean, comfortable and basic but fine. Luxurious co mpared to other places we have stayed in France. Positives: Lost of hot water, large baths (compared to others we have experienced!). All apts had balconies. Apartments varied in size and we'd recommend getting a larger apt if you intend to spend any time indoors. We have two teenage daughters and took a 2-bed which was OK but if going again would go for a 3 bed. Beds a bit on the hard side and they provided blankets, but duvets would have been nicer! Also no microwave, but did have dishwasher, otherwise kitchens basic and OK. Staff very nice and helpful. We arrived late (stuck in snow - make sure your snow chains fit!) and they had left apts open for us. Location super - right beside the lifts and small centre. Great spot for beginners/intermediates, nice green and blue runs and some reds. More adventrous ski-ers can go further afield to Valloire pretty easily. Lessons ealily arranged and good. ovely little nursery slope with free drag lift for beginners. Skis and ski shop is in this building, they are part of Skiset and do good deals on line. Staff there were very flexible too, eg swapped boards for skis, and replaced my lost pole without a problem. We got a very cheap rate as it was off season. We had fabulous snow and NO queuing at lifts so all in all great place for a late season holiday. Restaurants - La Glisse were really good to us, could not be nicer and managed our large group really well. But do NOT eat at the restaurant at the Hotel Club Les Carrettes where we had an awful experience - rude, bad service, and cold malfunctioning electric "hot rocks" on which the teens were supposed to be able to cook chicken.... recipe for salmonella. Horrible staff. Otherwise rop marks for Valmeinier!

Cheap but fine and near slopes and bars

Pretty basic and the apartments are small-ideal for a young family but 6 adults a bit of a squeeze. Communal areas not very attractive and reception only open for about 4 hours a day. That said, for the price, it's good value and the rooms have a dishwasher and hot water. The apartments are quiet and are only 2 mins walk from the main ski lift and the village 'square'. Valmeinier as a resort isn't particularly happening but the skiing is good, especially towards Valloire. Lots of parking too.
