fab location - peaceful village within 10 mins slow walk of 'Le Chateau d'Oleron' - a thriving small town

Basic accommodation but with plenty of space for 4 ( a bit cramped for us with 5). 2 shower rooms. kitchen equipment a bit limited - no kettle, very small espresso style cups, only 2 ring stove, microwave with a grill - but we still managed to self- cater for some meals. take your own pillows - theirs were definitely several years past their best!good sized sunny garden with pleasant outlook over fields and marshes. ( hence the mosquitoes!!) village picturesque and quiet. kids under the age of about 12 had a brilliant time riding bikes and scooters around the safe roads. swimming pool clean and not too busy but no shade. on site launderette an absolute rip-off at 7 euros per wash! Le Chateau d'Oleron is a very busy small town with a fabulous indoor market selling local produce and fresh fish, open every morning apart from Sunday. there are plenty of reasonably (for France) priced restaurants and bars, and small shops for browsing. there are at least 3 boulangeries and patisseries for bread and gateaux. all in all there is a lovely ambience in 'Le Chateaux' it feels very laid back and a holiday town but not in a tacky way. there are walks around the ramparts and citadel and down to the port where there are a number of fishermens cabins that have been turned into a sort of craft village. the port is very picturesque and has a number of good fish restaurants. we ate at 'Le Port' over looking the sea and 'Le Viaduc' - delicious! we rented bikes just around the corner form the holiday village for a reasonable price - approx 175 euros for 5 adult bikes for 5 days. the island cycle routes are beautiful if a little bumpy in places but at least it gets you away from the traffic and into the countryside. they aren't always well sign posted so it is worth buying a map from the tourist office for 50 cents. our teen agers were happy cycling to the Grand Plage and swimming and body surfing in the large atlantic waves. the new water park on the island is a bit pricey (approx 19 euros each) and there aren't any white knuckle rides.we would definitely go here again.

Booked a few days before arrival - pleasantly surprised but .....

Bit disorganised this year - wife found this accommodation with uk site - cotttagesforyou. We booked a x2 bedroom house with a garage and we were pleasantly surprised. Located just north of the citadel boundary and a pleasant 10 minute stroll to the village centre and eateries. The site has no security so essentially anyone could drive in but its very quiet with mostly French guests - house was great but with NO a/c our children (14/12) only lasted x1 night upstairs - beware stairs are very steep so essentially we lived on the ground floor using the sofa bed to sleep - we also slept with the back doors open as it was hot in the nights but the mozzies had a mini feast. Take mugs if you enjoy a cuppa and pillows too. You will struggle to cook meals with the facilities provided but it was fine for breakfast and lunchtime snacks. Stayed end of August so was cheap ~ £400 for the week and is quiet as the French schools were back. We used the free wifi in the market square (5 minute walk) and also hired bikes......really enjoyed despite the things noted. We drove from Calais 8.5 hours with a planned overnight in Orleans. If the price is right give it a go .....great beaches close by
