Great ski resort for beginners ski holiday, good apartments in a great location, shame about the lack of service

Well this was my first ski holiday, it will be one to remember for all the right reasons. Overall this was an excellent holiday, booked as a package through Crystal, it included a free ski pass for the resort, transfers from Turin airport which was all great value. The transfer from Turin is long it took us 3.5 hours, very twisty turny, so even if you dont get travel sick take some tablets before you leave it will make even the best travellers tums turn over for sure! I shared my apartment with a couple of friends, the apartments were approached via a very slippy driveway, thick with ice and snow, some grit would have been nice for our arrival, they did put some down later in the week. The receptionist was not available for our arrival and the rooms were not ready at 4.30pm which was a dissapointment, they were very disorganised so we left them to it and headed into the village for something to eat which was great, the small resort was friendly and quiet at the end of Jan, choice was limited but more lunch eating spots were on route in 1650 during our ski-ing days (main resort slightly lower down the mountain). When we eventually checkin the service was poor, very limited english and very little information, the only info we received about the resort & facilities was in french! We would reccomend the welcome evening, this is a must, there is a crystal rep on hand in the resort and he was helpful, he gave us a map of the runs with a bit of info on the best bits etc. The room was great, modern and generally clean. The kitchen was espically well equipped if you wanted to cook, but remember your dishwasher tablets! The view was excellent towards a red run over the pool and the two storey two bed apartments which are seperate to the main building. The apartments are ski to the door, their is a locker room downstairs where you keep your kit, walk up the hill in front of the other apartments and straight onto the baby slopes to warm up, its that easy! Coming back it was even easier, we skied directly to the door, it was very easy to pop back for lunch etc if we wanted to eat in the apartment. The bed was poor apparently, very hard and the pillows very cheap. But the bedroom in our apartment was private with a sliding door. Bathroom with shower over the bath, seperate loo which was handy. The sofa bed was very uncomfortable, it became a bit of a joke as the week went on, but the skiing made up for the rubbish beds, this is an excellent resort for the beginner, I managed all the green, blue and even a red on my first trip having learnt to ski during the summer in the uk at the snowdome. I could really reccomend "La Bouscatiere" restaurant in the village, just a few minutes from the hotel, it was excellent and great value for money. The other restaurant opposite was ok, Snow Frenzy I think it was called, but no comparision. Couple of supermarkerts in this tiny resort and again they were excellent, lots of choice and very fair prices. It is worth adding that this is not an Apres Ski Hot Spot, there are a few bars and overall the nightlife is limited, but it would have been wasted on me anyway as the skiing was so good. Its worth taking a torch for walking around the resort at night as they tend to swicth off the outside lights on the footpaths after 8pm! Every afternoon, early evenig we went to use the pool, sauna and steam room. These were clean and a great treat after a busy day's skiing and this proved an excellent way for us to relax, the outdoor pool was very warm but the path was thick with ice which would have been a real hazard if you didnt see it. The hotel is noted as having free wi-fi, it doesnt, you have to pay for it. We could get a really strong signal but were unwilling to pay for it when it should have been included in the package. Overall an excellent holiday, great skiing, good accomodation location and excellent resort for the first time skier, however I would reccomend learning to ski before you come to get the most out of your holiday. Learning basic french might be an idea too if you want to converse with the receptionist and read the menu's in the restaurants!

    Good location

Stayed here during the Ski season and was very happy overall. Had a small problem checking in and getting into our rooms as reception only work a few hours during the day which was not ideal. Room was nice but had some cleanliness issues such as hairs on the duvet. Quite small but all you needed as you didnt spend much time in there. Booked with crystal and had a free lift pass included. The location is good and the resort is perfect for learners. Nice restaurants and a supermarket about a five minute walk away. Not a lively resort however.

Les Orres Another ski holiday through Crystal from Doncaster to Turin, transfer to Les Orres is about 3.15 hours. Dont expect the driver to do a toilet stop or the driver to unlock the toilet in the bus as they dont like cleaning it. I probably cant blame them. The Crystal rep will try to sell you a useless loyalty card to use in the resort. They information pack was informative and the hotel was prepared for our arrival. We booked at Combre dor (at 1850) which was a pleasant surprise from the usual Crystal cheapest, smallest apartments we have managed to stay in. This is recently newly built and not too bad at all. Its a spacious 1 room apartment with a 2 person sofa bed and double bed to sleep 4 in total. The toilet space has room for a wash basin but it was not present and cleaning your hands afterwards it perhaps not something they would do but I like to., The shower area is spacious and with the missing wash basin! The air vents are disgustingly filthy and never cleaned, probably a health and safety issue to consider. The hotel has an outside swimming pool so bring your flippers. They give you a week free access on two separate computers ids. So the three of us were always fighting over two computers, I know were sad but what do you do without the internet in the cold evenings. Nothing else to do in Les Orres. The skis and boards are kept in a separate room downstairs with easy access to the piste, about 50-75 meters away from the hotel. You can ski to it but not from it as it is slightly upwards to reach the piste. The ski resort is very quiet even at half term and it was fantastic almost not to have to wait to get onto the lifts. Skiing in this place is good with enough for all skiers with different ability. However, the advance skier will do it all in one or two days. Usual lifts but no cabins at all and this makes the place look a little ancient. Very difficult for anyone to do any cross country skiing as it is not well promoted at all and away from the main pistes. Yes, there is a bus service but you have to ask the tourist information first, Crystal didnt mention it at all. Not a lot of restaurants on the mountains and certainly overpriced and happy to take your money for maximal profits, hot chocolate for 4 euros is too much. There is a nice take away place at 1850 and for about 13 euro you get a pizza that is a great size and enough for two to share. I bought my bread, milk etc in the morning at the Shop at the end of the village only because the owner/manager was just a nice friendly man who had a genuine interest in whom you are and where you came from. It was still a bit expensive but same as all mountain supermarkets. Is there anything to do from a nightlife perspective, no and thank you it is a lovely place for skiing and not for getting drunk? Good for family but the long transfer and the mature skier that comes there to ski and ski alone. Please dont tell anyone else. Not bad at all for a Crystal holiday.

    Grate location 2014/2015 new year

was lovely accommodation , out door pool was warm providing you went in it before the steam room , grate location 2 minute walk to the ski slopes , the staff in the shops were always kind and helpful , and the ski schools were excellent, the only think id say is if you don't speak or understand French learn a little before going as 90% of the resort don't understand or understand very little English but grate resort and looking at going again

    Great apartments

Great apartments. Close to the ski slopes. Smaller apartment house, which has its own outdoor swimming pool, a Turkish and a Finnish sauna. The apartments are in very good condition. The biggest advantage of an apartment house has a common room with a fireplace. Each apartment has two access wi fi. I recommend apartment on the ground floor.
