A masterclass in how to run a small boutique hotelElena and her amazing team run an outstanding hotel. I love small hotels over big ones, and Relais Del Maro epitomises why that is in spades! The rooms are all beautifully decorated and furnished, all the staff are happy, smiling, welcoming and seemingly effortlessly anticipate everyones requirements and it is situated in a beautiful traditional village in an extraordinarily scenic part of Italy. However, two further things differentiate this hotel from any others I have stayed. The hotel is spread over 3 buildings in the village. This means that the bedrooms are spread around the village square. In practice, they are a short walk apart (no more than 100 metres) and this actually creates a positive atmosphere, mixing hotel guests with villagers, making the hotel feel part of, and integral to the village. Secondly, whilst breakfast and lunch are offered, dinner is not. But fear not: this is a good thing as it means that the local restaurants are popular and thriving, and provide great local dishes at reasonable prices. We tried 3 of the 4 and didn't have a poor meal. The only reason we didn't try the fourth was because it offered a fixed 17 courses which coming the day after having 12 courses would have finished me off! Finally, a special mention of the breakfast, which is the best spread I have ever had in a hotel of any size (really!) All local produce, with its provenance lovingly described, bread, charcuterie, cheeses, even fresh honeycomb, and 10 different loose leaf teas. It is clear that Elena runs a very tight ship, leading her staff by example. Nothing is too much trouble. Even when I suffered a mechanical issue with one of the hired e-bikes, her father very kindly came and picked me up with no drama and good humour. A very lovely place.

Perfettissimo! We stayed here two years ago and on that occasion I rated it as one of my all-time favourites. This time Im going to stick my neck out and say that I literally cannot think of any hotel in Europe that I like more. (Only India offers any competition!) It all starts with Elena and her trusty side-kick Martina. They are both such incredible, natural, life-enhancing hospitality people that it really doesnt seem fair for one hotel to have BOTH of them! Special mention too for the Jill-of-all trades waitress (Gioia?). Ive already raved about the quality of the rooms, the garden and pool, the breakfast, the lunches, the charm of the village, the walks in the glorious surrounding countryside But one thing struck me this year more strongly than before (though other reviewers have picked up on this too): theres immense pride in the region and all it has to offer. They have published four or five little booklets detailing the local restaurants, the local sights, the local produce etc. And practically everything at breakfast has a label detailing its provenance. The wine list is amazing (especially when you consider that they are only serving light lunches and occasional drinks) and would shame many serious restaurants. Two years ago, I could only think of one reservation: the lack of a good restaurant in the village that didnt force you to eat impossibly huge menus. Even that has now been solved with the migration from Lucinasco to Borgomaro of the Etta restaurant (see separate glowing review). So many thanks and looking forward to our next visit!

A real gem in the hills of Liguria. This is a perfect example of a Boutique hotel in a pretty village location by the river. A truly stand out team of staff who know what you need before you do! The rooms all individually decorated and very clean cater for singles to family visitors. Important for me in the heat of summer was air conditioning working very well. The pool and garden area is serviced for drinks and lunch with a good choice of menu. There is no need to go far if you are looking for a relaxing weekend. Recommendations for dinner were much appreciated. We will return again for sure.

Outstanding staff and beautiful hotel & locationWe stayed here for 3 nights in August and it was an unforgettable experience. We had the friendliest of welcomes and have never felt more at home arriving at a hotel before. Every single staff member was delightful and most helpful in recommending places in which we should visit. The breakfast was INSANE and the best thing about it was that every product is locally produced. I work in the hotel industry myself and a hotel like Relais Del Maro make me feel proud to work in this sector. We will definitely be visiting next summer and are counting down the days already.

Perfection! We had the most wonderful stay at Borgomaro this August. Absolutely EVERYTHING about this hotel is amazing - beautiful rooms and wonderful garden and pool set in the most picturesque Italian village only 20 minutes from the coast. We travelled with our 2 children who are 10 and 7 years old - they loved the pool and everything felt so relaxed. The staff here are beyond words - so welcoming and helpful in every way possible - making reservations at restaurants to serving delicious lunch and tea. We cannot thank every here are the hotel enough - we had the best week together thank to their care and consideration to make us all feel so welcome and at home.
