Fabulous luxury hotel and restaurantWe were driving from Birmingham to Munich, and our plans were to spend several days seeing the countryside on the way. Looking for a suitable and comfortable stop en-route, my internet research showed this hotel-restaurant looked very interesting. The fact that it is Relais et Chateaux strongly suggests it will be good, and it was. Our receptionist was very friendly, and though she would have spoken English to me had I asked her to, she spoke French in a manner sympathetic to an English ear, but still explaining everything we needed to know. There is an indoor pool and sauna here, and I had a wonderful relaxing swim, before going and having a rest before dinner. There is also an outdoor pool but I didn't use it. The restaurant is superb. The chef is well-connected in the world of haute cuisine: a friend of the late great Paul Bocuse, and himself a MOF. The menu is a mix of old and new cuisine - we tried some traditional dishes - his tripe dish was a thing of delight. Tripe has a reputation of being a poor man's dish, but it can be exquisite, and this was exquisite. I had some pigeon for my main course which rivalled the best I have eaten. Dessert was divine: mine looked like a selection of mushrooms, but they were made from chocolate and soft meringue, with local honey flavour. All of this set in the Vosges mountains, up the hill from Gerardmer, which itself is a very pretty town. I highly recommend a stay, even if it means, as it did for us, quite a detour from the way Google Maps would take you from Birmingham to Munich!

Shocking experience!I arrived around 6 pm. I reserved a superior room for 240 euro per night + 17 euro extra for the dog and 24 euro breakfast. They showed me the room..it was nice but when I opened the balcony door a strong fish odor was coming from down...the room was just over the restaurant. Note that I booked a superior room not a standard one! So I asked to be moved to any other one that has no fish smell. The lady at the reception told me they were full booked and all other customers already check in so there was no other solution. Or in nice way I should find another property. I claimed that it was 6 pm and I had 5 hours car drive on my shoulder and I was not able to go anywhere else so they found me another room. Front road so you can enjoy the sounds of the cars and moto all evening, a real relaxing experience! Note in all this, they didnt make any sign to try to make up, like asking if I want to drink something in the main time (I used to have a drink offered when you check in, a small gesture...). Anyway it was for one night and I said ok never mind 300 euro to sleep on the road...a lesson for next time. So I went out with my dogs for short walk and here the crazy thing. There was a dog crying in a locked car (only few inches open window and he was in the truck of the car, where you store your luggage). So I watched around and an old man with a young lady told me that he was crying because I was around. Note there was 25 degree outside with sun and you know dogs cannot sweat like us. So I asked gently to the man if it was just for few min (may be they have to check in etc), he answered me in rude way that is was not my business. I argued back that dogs cannot stay in locked car when is hot outside, he said more angry at me that his dog is a strong dog not like mine (I have pugs) and he can do weathever he wants. So I went back to the reception to get help asking the number of the police so we could help the dog and here is the worse of all this story, the responsible of the hotel told to the assistant dont give her the number, its Mr Xxx, an old client. When I tried to raisoining her to come to see the dog, she told me, that its not my business, that everybody does want they want with their animal and that she will not give me the police number or call for me (there is very poor reception sono had to use data mobile). The man also try to scare me telling me that i will see if is not better to have his dog, a rotweiller, in the car instead Free in the hotel (indicating that something could happening my small dogs). So this is my experience. 240 euro for a room in front a noisy road, a shocking experience on maltretance on animal and worse when asked to get the number of the police they refused! I will leave early tomorrow morning, scare about my dogs and my person. I could go over the room but I cannot accept that you feel scared in a hotel 4 stars, a chateau relais. I never experience a worse experience than this one! And when I pass by the reception the responsible (a blond lady) didt make any effort to talk with me, she just ignored me. I hope my dogs and myself will be able to leave saflty tomorrow morning.
