  Better than Expected

  A stayed at the Northern Grand Hotel (NGH) in early February 2020. The outside is nothing special but the inside was surprisingly better than expected. It was quite nice for a small town. The room that I had (two double beds) was comfortable. It had great black out blinds (not so important in the winter, but very important in the summer). The bathroom had radiant heat floors, which my toes appreciated. The hotel restaurant is quite good. I had the Pad Thai. It was as good as any I have had previously. The complementary hot breakfast was scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, but they also had a nice fruit salad, yogurt, and cereals.

  The hotel tries hard but there are a couple of drawbacks.

  The major drawback is sound transmission between the rooms. The first night I was there (of three) I could hear virtually every word of a very long conversation the woman in the next room was having with someone on the phone. At first I thought the conversation was coming from the hall and wondered why people were carrying on a conversation in the hall. But then I realized it was coming from the next room. The next 2 nights no problem or I would have asked to move. The shower is idiosyncratic to put it charitably but the towels are great. The room itself was comfortable, the working arrangements perfectly satisfactory (desk, chair, wifi) and the breakfast is definitely above average.

  Gem of the North - skip the big name chains and stay here

  We travelled from Williams Lake to Fort St John to play hockey. This hotel has customer service dialled in. Tastefully updated, the hotel staff thought of it all when they added a games room for kids (or adults) to go hang out in. And breakfast - not your ordinary continental breakfast. Literally the best one weve been to outside of Banff Springs Hotel. The restaurant was also a great surprise - excellent steak diner with quick and pleasant service. This hotel is worth your stay. You wont be disappointed.

  Very comfortable and quiet

  We stayed on the 5th floor for 3 nights in July 2020. We found the entire room very comfortable- bed, room temp, pillows. There were a couple of nice perks like a robe, and ample charging stations and plug ins near the bed, reading light and black out shades. All made for a nice stay. Only reason I gave a 4/5 was because the toilet was running and we were always having to jiggle the handle. Thanks to Jordan at the front desk for being so welcoming.

  Great hotel

  This was a surprisingly great hotel. Surprising because from the outside it looks rather dull, bleak and old. Even the entrance under canopy looks suspect But as soon as I walked in I was surprised by the modern decor and the pristine lobby. Then greeted by Jordan , who was awesome all 3 days we were there, made it obvious this hotel was a step up. I go to FSJ often. This is not the only hotel I have stayed in but it is by a long shot the nicest. With Covid and a slowdown in the energy industry we got our room at a great price. Our room was perfect as was our whole stay. Fantastic service. Thanks Jordan. Ill be back to the NGH
