    Ruined by the PRC Tourists

We chose this hotel because of its hot spring pools. When we have the pools to ourselves or when we soaked with other Taiwanese travelers, it was tranquil, relaxing, and heavenly. Unfortunately, we and the other Taiwanese guests had to evacuate by 4:59 p.m. everyday. At 5:00 p.m., busloads of uncouth, raucous Chinese tourists would swarm in and ruin the otherwise serene atmosphere. And, around 6:00 p.m., they would flood the restaurant and push the decibel level into the red zone. But for the obnoxious Chinese tourists, we would give this place five stars.

We ran away from this hotel

We had booked this hotel for a relaxing three day stay during our Asian backpacking trip. Unfortunately we arrived here the day after a typhoon, so the spa area and hotel garden/front looked messy with branches and leafs everywhere. The recreation forest/park was closed due to the typhoon. The resort is located in quite a remote area, the town is 10mins by car but on \foot obviously a lot further. Our room was large (4 person room) with a comfortable couch and table and large television. This was the only positive aspect of our stay unfortunately. When taking a hot shower/bath the whole room filled up with sulphur smell which was quite unpleasant. The spa area once opened, filled up with noisy Chinese tourists who came with touring cars for the afternoon. The on site restaurant and shops had strange opening hours and were constantly closing and opening. We wanted to get some food in town so we wanted to use the bikes the resort had for rent. When we asked about the bikes, we were told (at 4.30pm) that we could not use them because it would get dark soon. Two hours later it was still not dark.. As there was nothing to do here, we could not relax in the spa nor head out to the forest park we decided to end our stay prematurely and head back to Taitung.

Great property, but as Gaakin D reviewed, PRC (Mainland Chinese) tourists can be a bit of a pain

I won't re-iterate what has already been said by the other reviewers here, especially about the mainland tourists and the sulfur stink of the water (that's really how it smells when it comes from the mountain, btw), so if either of those puts you off, then you have been properly warned. Overall, the rooms and facilities are very nice and the property very safe, but my only complaints were: -the price of the restaurant for dinner (breakfast was good and included in cost for us); my father and I decided to walk down the hill to hit up the local restaurants closer to the other hotels -the staff tried to get us to stay at the property to dine there for dinner (one of the staff was on his motorscooter chasing us as we were walking off the property and then finally turned back when he realized that we were not dining there for the evening) -some of the equipment could have been better maintained, my father attempted to use one of the drying machines there, but it was busted (even though it still took his money). Luckily, one of the staff there was able to let him use the other one (for free) to dry out stuff. -the walk down to any sort of semblance of civilization is about 20 minutes (not even to the main town), and taxis will rip you off blind ($7 for not even a 5 minute drive up the mountain) -wifi was only available in the lobby area, but they have computer you can rent there (30 minutes for 10nt) The good: -towels & slippers included -breakfast included (very nice spread of more local and less western fare, but don't expect omlettees & eggs) -facilities are very safe; a lot of staff always around, although it may be hard to distinguish them from visitors (they are usually in plain clothes and smoking) -rooms were nice and clean -very nice location (way up the hill)

    Average tourist hotel

This is a fairly large tourist resort, at which several busses roll into the late afternoon; then the place is bustling and the hot springs pools full of them. There are WiFi access points near the rooms but they don't work, forcing you to the lobby or the pool area to connect. Lots of breakfast items but not much that is tasty or palatable (too bad as Taiwan has great food). The best dinner options are in town but you will need transport as it's a 20 minute downhill walk. Rooms are spacious and clean.

Quiet days in a well-maintained simple hot spring spa

Yes, there is sulfur smell all over the place - this is one of the reasons to visit a hot spring. The pools with different temperatures are well maintained, staff is caring, and the best thing: From morning 8.00am to afternoon 5.00pm you share these great facilities with - nobody. Tour groups leave after early breakfast, and the next tour groups do not arrive before late afternoon. In between it is all yours! Maybe a local couple or two is joining you in this great jungle-embedded location. If you do not like the pool (why?) you can always fill up the bathtube in your room with hot spring water. Walks take you into thick forest (beware of monkeys), and to smallish shops and restaurants nearby. But do not expect any distractions other than than. Enjoy the remote location, the nature, the quietness during the day - and the breakfast buffet. There are wooden huts available in the backyard, which are recommended. A place to relax and enjoy - at reasonable cost. And do not be picky: Chinese tour groups keep prices low. To get there (and away), take the hourly bus either to/from Taitung bus station, or to/from Zhiben train station (same bus). Avoid taxis. You do not need them.
