This is the place you go if there's nowhere left to go

"Well, this is the place you go if there's nowhere left to go." This is the response we received after informing staff that we were sweating in our room because our one window was broken and there was no AC. After a week-long camping trip in Alaska in June, we checked in to Qupqugiaq because we wanted to be close to the Anchorage airport for our morning flight and because we were looking forward to taking finally taking a shower. We got one out of two. We decided not to use the communal shower at the end of the hall after seeing a used condom on the floor and a toilet that hadn't been cleaned in days. A heatwave--temps int he 80's--was going through Anchorage the night we arrived and so our small room with three people in it turned into an oven when we were unable to open our room's broken window or turn on the AC. The front desk explained that they didn't have AC and that our window had been broken for days--"I guess no one ever fixed that." She sent a repair person to look at the window who gave us that memorable quote after telling us that there was nothing he could do and the room would remain sweltering. We asked for a new room and they said they could offer us a room at 1:30 am if its occupants hadn't arrived yet. After a restless few hours of waiting without receiving any calls, we checked at 1:30am to see if we could move, but were told no. That was never really an option. In the morning, there wasn't anyone at the front desk to give our room keys to, let alone a manager to talk to. I called a few times to talk to a manager after getting home, but apparently, there was never one on-site when I called and no one ever returned my messages. We weren't expecting much when we made this reservation--just a clean shower and a good night's sleep--but even these expectations were far too grand. This was easily the worst hotel experience of my life, made worse by the Qupguiaq's dismissive and inhospitable attitude of "we don't owe you anything." In the end, I wish we would have just camped outside of the city so we could have actually enjoyed our last night in Alaska.

    Bed Bugs Confirmed

I am not one to write negative reviews but I feel it important to share my experience this time. I booked a bed pod for three nights. I knew it wasn't fancy but I'm not picky. I arrived, they gave me a key and I went to my room. It was not a bed pod but a small room. Nicer then what I booked. After the second night I noticed I acquired a few bug bites. I didn't think too much about it as I am used to hiking in the woods. The third night I woke up covered in bites and bed bugs crawling on me. I caught about 7 of them in a plastic bottle, went to the lobby and waited 4 hours till the general manager arrived. In that amount of time I spoke to a maintenence guy and a security guy. They were sorry for my situation but not surprised as it had happened in the past. I showed the bottle of bugs to the GM upon her arrival. She told me straight up that they did not have bed bugs and that I was the problem and my stay was not refunded. If u look at other reviews this is not the first case of bed bugs or being treated poorly from this business. She also gave me crap because her employees gave me the wrong room. Don't go here.

    Photos are deceiving

I booked this hotel last minute as I had finished my tour of Alaska at 2pm and my flight out of Anchorage wasnt until 1am. In the photos it looked clean and well presented. I opted for the POD as I just needed a few hours to sleep. When I arrived even from the road it looked dirty. There were people in the parking lot that didnt look very savoury. Once I got inside it was dirty and not appealing. Lady at the desk looked tired and uninterested. She gave me key to the room and said just walk through that door. Door was a push door with only sharp cutouts for a handle. My POD was small which I new it was going to be. It smelled of body odour , bare wires showing and a switch with tape over it. There was a mount for a tv but no tv. Only a light cover on the bed and a small hand towel. Because I had already paid I stayed for a few hours sleep while laying on the covers. I did not feel safe here and left 6 hours later. Would not recommend for solo female travellers or families.
