They came up Trumps!I organised a Wine Appreciation trip to Porto and the Douro - 49 Appreciators! After 3 days in Porto, which the group loved, we travelled to Tabucao via the lovely historic Guimaraes. The Palace Hotel was our choice of a base point for the Douro valley, but I note that it is also called the Palacio Hotel and Spa, Douro. It would appear that the Spa has not been built yet, but let that not put you off. The hospitality they offered us was exemplary. Fernanda and Diana on the front desk always had a smile and a most willing attitude. Rui was so helpful to us in the Dining Rooms. We had a separate space laid for us in the main room for the Douro pre-dinner tasting each night. (and do not forget the very refreshing Vinho Verde Whites!) This set the scene for the grand buffet evening meals. On the last night we paid a little extra and had a great final dinner followed by our speeches and self entertainment. We thank the management and Staff for being so accommodating. The Douro is a wonderful UNESCO region and the Palace Hotel is a great launching venue for travelling in the Cimo Corgo - the very central part of this great wine region! The hotel, does not have sight of the Douro river itself, but the price reflects this fact and there is a scenic road (or two actually) that connect the hotel to the picturesque N222 national road that runs along the banks of the river. This area is like many others in the world, if you have sight of "water" the price leaps. Stay at the Palace and avoid those high prices and still be looked after extremely well! Buffet Breakfasts, buffet dinners and spacious rooms and bathrooms. One last thing, there was a heatwave to end all heatwaves while we were there. To come back to the cool of the large foyer air conditioning was a revelation!!

A little known palaceThe hotel has a gorgeous vista overlooking the town of Tabuaco. It is a large hotel and yet there only seemed to be us and two other sets of people staying. Staff were friendly and breakfast was ok. Went into town for dinner at a restaurant recommended by the hotel. All a bit twilight zone, the hotel deserves more guests and for the price, you can't do better.

Nice hotel but where is the staff? Poorest breakfastI have to say when you arrive you have great expectations, the location is great and the view from the balcony is amazing. Rooms are spacious and clean. What surprised me was the number of staff: one person at the reception, no staff at the bar, no one around. Breakfast was probably the worst I've seen in a hotel. Instant coffee, artificial orange juice, variety is so poor we've left after eating a few pieces of fruit. If you're lactose intolerant or gluten intolerant you have no other options. Nothing was fresh, no hot food. I have to say, how do you want people to become regular costumers and come back with this kind of service? What a disappointment.
