Nice, but Could be even better...Like another reviewer wrote, this is really a restaurant with a few rooms for rent on the side. Of course the main reason to stay here is to avoid the corporate predictable environment of an international chain hotel. The building is beautiful, and well preserved. Although I'd bet most of the furniture etc is not antique. There's lots of chintz and faux-antiques. My room was large and comfy. The bathroom is amazing. The double bath with jacuzzi would make for a fun romantic date, but I didn't have one. The Japanese toilet is pretty impressive. I think only a few of the most expensive rooms overlook the garden. Mine was close to a blind wall, so no view and not much light. Breakfast is no longer in a tent but in the lobby. That's an improvement. Bizarrely, given the presence of a fancy restaurant, breakfast is very limited. I had the Chinese set (other choice is Western set breakfast) and the quality was OK but it was the same every day. Tip for the hotel: play some background music. Breakfast feels cold and impersonal. The lobby setting is nice and if they made an effort to give some high quality choices (how about a choice of tea to start with?) and provide some ambiance this could be a lovely experience. Instead, right now it feels like a youth hostel. Most of the staff you will see is associated with the restaurant, especially at night. And that's really a separate business. The 'rooms for hire' business is just very minimally staffed. Don't expect concierge, room service, on-site spa, etc. The Laundry service was quick and efficient though. The location is good, quiet and walking distance from shops, restos and the Metro. In short, an interesting building but overall an experience that could be much better and turned into really an exclusive boutique hotel experience if they made a bit more of an effort. Now, at times, you felt like an interloper, an afterthought to the main purpose of the business, which is the restaurant. The restaurant is private dining only-no walk ups for hotel guests.

Beautiful Room...I recently stayed at the PEI mansion - room was beautiful... all traditional Chinese. Antiques were lovely. The only unfortunate thing was the bed... it was hard as a rock. I felt like I was sleeping on the floor. If they upgraded to a mattress ( I really dont even think it was a mattress) this would be a 5 star hotel. Also, I dont eat meat/dairy... it was hard to speak with staff about breakfast to get the food I needed, but that happens all the time. Also... great location ! Amazing restaurants and Shopping walking distance and very convenient to get the subway. All in all 4.25

Very disappointedStayed two nights at this hotel for business. The mansion itself I could imagine was something stunning at its prime time; however, this hotel operator failed to turn this beautiful place into something nice. What they did was ruining the place, a big pity. The service was terrible. Staff were taking to each other or doing nothing when guests were waiting to check in. Breakfast was simple Chinese congee with pickles, boiled egg, and citrus. No complain about the food but the breakfast place was just a room with a big round table and they made guests sitting around that table which was quite awkward. The room was two floor with bathroom at the entry floor and bed upstairs. The staircase was quite steep and the lighting system was stupidly designed that you cant simply switch lights on or off for a particular floor. Overall, very disappointing experience and wish someone could take over and do a better job to preserve the place and resume its old day glory.

Dining in one of the most famous world architect's ancestor homeCame here to learn and appreciate I.M. Pei's father's home. Supposedly the Peis were already officials in the Qing dynasty and his father was made the first chief of Bank of China. Feng shui permeates everything designed in the house from the dragon staircase to the hundred longevity wall to the five fascard (representing the five elements: Water, Fire, Gold, Wood, and Soil) pavillion in the garden. The current operator of the restaurant is a high end chain called Xing Rong Ji. The taste of the seasonal June Yellow crabs (liu yue huang) complements well with the settings.
