UnderstaffedI dont know what is going on with this place but I have to think it has to have gone down hill since the guidebook I read that listed it as a cant miss destination was written. Check in time was listed as 3pm and confirmed as 3pm in an email. I arrived at 5pm and was told the room wasnt ready. I understand things happen but there was no apology or explanation such as staff being out sick or something, instead I was brusquely told that they had a lot of guests (not unexpected in peak season) relative to staff. I heard another person attempting to check in being told this as well in the same short manner. Things come up, I understand, but this seemed to be par for the course and I would have appreciated a simple apology. I guess it happens so often and staff is overworked so much that they stopped pretending its unusual. Its minor but I also planned to use the grab n go case while I was there for food. I thought it would have sandwiches or eggs or something. I stayed two nights and it was close to empty both days. The second day nothing new had been added at all when I stopped in in the morning. They had some fruit, prepackaged bars and cereal and a few drinks and muffins and that was it. The muffins were delicious and I did enjoy them. The card reader did not work correctly both times I purchased them. The front desk manager also had to work the grab n go and seemed harried when she couldnt get the machine to work while a line formed at check in. The WiFi also did not work the entire first day we were there. We were told it was due to the number of guests but it worked very slowly the next day so I think there was actually a problem with it the first day.Dinner was pretty good. We did have a fairly long wait for it and the host was very busy also taking all the to go orders and payments and bringing out the food from the kitchen. As far as social distancing I wouldnt choose this place if that is a concern. They had the plastic barriers and hand sanitizers but some of the staff werent wearing masks or were only wearing them some of the time or pulling them down frequently. It also ended up being a crowded place due to the restaurant being open to not only guests but other people. I believe due to being short staffed a lot of things were overlooked too. I heard guests asking for missing toiletries and about the fire pits which nobody explained or mentioned when we checked in. I heard guests mentioning that TVs werent working in their rooms and when we got to our room we had only one cup for our coffee and there were hairs and things a few places so it was evident the cleaning of the room was rushed. The room itself was nice enough though simple. The balcony was really nice. Having a lake there was nice though I did notice many of the trees in the area around the lodge were looking brown so it was okay but wasnt the vibrant colorful foliage I expected. Based on when I went I dont think I timed it wrong so maybe this year just wasnt a good foliage year? The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. All in all it was an average stay but I dont think I would do it again for the price.

Not Bad For 2020We really wanted to find a bright spot in this year and came here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. However, considering how bad and crazy the rest of 2020 has been this place fits right in. The rooms are not what you see online. They're cinderblock walls, dated, have no phones, no cell service and horrible wifi throughout the property. All of the rooms have a very nice lake view, and our king bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. We knew were in trouble the moment we walked in after driving 5 hours and the woman behind the front desk said "I can't talk to you until after 3pm" A very nice gentleman (host) working lunch invited us into the dining room and offered us a drink of his own creation, that was very good. If the rest of your staff were like him, you'd be set! While we waited for our room we decided to go check out the bar. My husband's wine glass was filthy. Later that evening we went to the dining room for dinner - this is where it got really bad. You're not allowed to make reservations, so during a pandemic 60 people congregate near the front door waiting to eat. You can't go wait in your room because there's no phone and poor cell service. So we waited for over an hour for a table. After being seated, we waited almost half an hour for Dina, our server, to acknowledge us. We ordered drinks and dinner and 30 minutes later Dina says "sorry we've run out of your wine". A bit later, the hostess walked by and asked "was everything ok?" and I said "we haven't gotten our food yet". The hostess walked back to the kitchen and came out with our food and said "look what I found" she placed a dried out burger on the table and a hot plate of pasta. The next we saw Dina was when she gave us the check which included the wine they had run out of. Does management know of all these problems? ABSOLUTELY!(Just scroll and read the other recent reviews) We're stuck here until Wednesday but you don't have to be - THIS IS YOUR WARNING. You're welcome.

Blue Ridge Hidden GemAbsolutely gorgeous lakeside setting with a view of the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Comfortable rooms with views of the lake/peaks, walking paths, restaurant and lounge. Great staff, excellent service, peaceful get away. Use this as your "base camp" while touring the VA section of the Blue Ridge Parkway and other nearby attractions.

Scenic retreatThe Peaks of Otter Lodge offered us an incredibly serene setting for our one-night stay. The room was gorgeous with vaulted ceilings, a comfy king bed, a balcony, and a phenomenal view. Ate at the restaurant near a fireplace. Food was much better than expected based on other reviews Ive read. Service was kind and quick. Cell reception and WiFi werent great, but this was our experience throughout the entire blue ridge parkway.
