    PERFECTO Y TRANQUILO

    Very pleasant stay, great service.

Very nice room. The bed was extremely comfortable, the amenities were top-tier. The staff were terrific, including Rainbow our bartender and the chef who came out to describe vegan options with my wife.

    awesome family friendly/dog friendly hotel

Went here with my kiddo and puppy for ski week in Feb of 2020 (pre-covid) and it was an amazing time. Conveniently located close to eateries and the beach. Rooms were clean and newly remodeled. Pool and spa area had plenty of lounging space for daytime hangouts with my daughter and in the evening relaxing by the spa. Can't wait to return!

    This hotel is a paradox.

A paradox: is this hotel a Marriott or not a Marriott? As a Titanium Elite, I often book with Marriott. Heres why I subject myself to this torture: 1. Room upgrades. This hotel unfortunately was playing games with room upgrades. First the suites were for sale on the app but mysteriously unavailable. Then there was a mysterious cancellation that made them available after I pushed back. Then... no, a quick radio out to housekeeping... unavailable again! We ended up in a standard room. 2. $10 Food and Beverage credit. This credit was given! Reluctantly! And upon several reminders! Woohoo! Of course the only F&B right now is a cabinet of Pringles and M&Ms. Thats not anyones fault. A sign of the times, lets say. 3. Breakfast for two. Also given very, very reluctantly. But executed just fine. Kudos! 4. Points and elite qualifying nights. Heres where the paradox becomes paradoxical. After many many efforts to try to earn points for this hotel stay, Ive just decided they dont want to do it. The hotel failed to notice my Marriott account upon check-in; this caused me to give a confused call to customer service. This caused the hotel to give me a confused call to my room. Later, while watching the sun set on the ocean, I got another confused call from the property. You opened a case against us, a manager said as cheerfully as he could. Later, at hotel check-out, another clerk began by saying: Theres a case against us. Lets settle this now. At first I thought the case was sort of unfair, but now Im thinking it wasnt really enough?! I still havent earned any points from this stay. 5. Brand standards. You expect a certain quality of bedding with a hotel chain. Sadly, this hotel seems to be skirting those standards. The sheets were threadbare and scratchy. The mattress was creaky and squeaky. My guess is these soft areas of maintenance have taken a hit with occupancy dropping. 6. Reliable HVAC. Do you want your room temperature to be 66 degrees when its 55 outside? That is not physically possible at this property. I have a five word suggestion for anyone considering this property: stay at the Hyatt Place.

    Mostly good, one big drawback

I came here alone over the holiday week to work on my novel-in-progress. I was looking for a pleasant, comfortable room with plenty of quiet. In most ways, the Paradox delivered. It's been nicely renovated, with stylish, minimalist rooms, a nice restaurant/bar, and fun pool/hot tub area. In non-COVID times, I imagine it's a great place to stay. My one complaint is that the walls/floors are paper thin. After moving into my first room, I had to request a move after my neighbors started playing music and it was as if they were in the same room with me (you know it's bad when you can sing along with the exact lyrics). The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, and moved me to a part of the building with no other guests, which was great for two days. Then, on New Year's Eve, some guests moved into the room above me and it was like elephants all night long. It's not the guests' fault, it's the construction. The beautiful hardwood floors in the room don't help -- they magnify rather than muffle the sound. Otherwise, it's a cool hotel and, like I said, the staff was wonderful. There are tiny mini-fridges in the room, but because of the COVID food situation, I requested a larger one and they accommodated me. My only caveat: if quiet is important to you, make special arrangements when you reserve. Two more points: This is not a beachfront hotel, but is an easy drive to any of the Santa Cruz beaches. Also, if you like poke, the Poke Bowl is wonderful -- super fresh.
