We just enjoyed a wonderful morning with Albert, Maurice, and Mel. The kayak through the mangrove was a once in a lifetime experience. Fishing was very enjoyable. We couldnt have been happier to be interrupted by a family of manatee. What a pleasure to watch. Mel clearly loves her heritage and we were privileged to share her knowledge and her delicious cooking. Albert looked after out every need. Maurice is joyful and a pleasure to be around. Thank you.

    Thanks guys!

Our multi-generational family had a great experience at the palmento grove. Grandpa enjoyed the fishing experience and catching his first snook. Albert prepared it on the BBQ and it was absolutely delicious! My 4 year old son enjoyed playing in the open space and the proximity to the water. We kayaked every morning and enjoyed exploring the area, Hopkins, the ice cream shop down the street and excellent garifuna food. It is a comfortable, welcoming, no-frills place with kind and helpfil staff.

    A special experience

We spent a morning with Owani at Palmento Grove. We took advantage of the shuttle service and were picked up at our hotel. (Have a little patience as he was running on what we learned is "Belize time.") Our adventure began when the van came to the end of the road and just...stopped.... our confusion quickly abated as.we were soon pleased to learn a quick boat ride (launched at the end of the road) would take us to this magical place. We visited with our 5 and 7 year old sons. It was hot and they were distracted by dogs, but Owani was patient and managed to keep all of us very engaged for several hours. When the kids describe their visit to Belize, they often describe cracking the coconuts and cooking with traditional ingredients, the most amazing fish stew we have ever had. We had a great opportunity to learn from a master drummer, but unfortunately, our little intrepid travel buddies had lost their ability to focus and pay attention after all of the other amazing activities that morning. It is easy to go to Belize and stay at the resort to sip daiquiris or use the natural landscape as an adventure playground (and we did plenty of that too). This experience is a most wonderful way to connect to the culture, sounds, and people. Owani was open about her life, her history, and her culture. Bottom line. We are so glad we came here. Food was amazing. Tour was fun and instructional. Owani and her family's passion for preserving their culture through educating tourists as well as the younger members of the Garifuna community is to be commended. (Bonus for our family, our son's attachment to the dogs at Palmento grove inspired us to follow through on rescuing a puppy when we got home!).

    Do Not Miss

Our visit to Palmento Grove for their cultural experience was the highlight of our entire Belize adventure. Changing into traditional Garifuna attire, we spend the next several hours learning about the fascinating history and culture of the Garifuna people, seeing first hand the plants used in foods and medicine, and traditional building materials and day to day implements. At the same time we took part in preparing a delicious Garifuna meal. The day was topped off by learning drumming rhythms and making music with a master drummer. A magical experience with great value for the money and friendly and knowledgeable teachers who are passionate and sincere about sharing and maintaining the Garifuna culture. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

    Garifuna cultural tour

So much to say about our experience. My husband and I spent several hours with Uwahnie yesterday and the entire experience was amazing. First, Uwahnie has an intense passion for the Garifuna people and heritage. It was clear in everything she said and did. She taught us about their history, past and current struggles to have freedom and equality. The entire experience was very fun and enlightening. We learned about their basket weaving and thatching, language, and traditions. After, we learned to husk coconuts, learned about and picked fresh herbs for our lunch we were to prepare. We drank fresh coconut water and learned to crack coconuts and shred the meat for use in Hudut. We chopped herbs and garlic for the stew and seasoned the fish before frying. My husband mashed the plantains. The meal was fantastic and was followed by a drumming lesson with Boom Boom. He was patient and made it a lot of fun. We followed up with a dessert of Cassava cake and Plantain cocktail. This is an experience that would be great for families with kids as well. Listening to Uwahnie speak about the Garifuna culture, was the highlight for me. She is a strong, intelligent woman fighting for her culture to not get lost or become dependent on others for its survival. I was deeply moved by her and the entire experience. I can not recommend enough. I would also book directly with Palmetto Grove vs with your resort.
