the WORST GH in experience.-Stayed multiple nights in May 2017. -NOT good AT ALL. Better to find any guesthouse OTHER THAN this Morinoki. It is a waste of time or money. -Morinoki was the WORST guesthouse ever I had. It is not because its older or insufficient facility's concerns at all, but its owner's professional low level of quality over guests. (HP or FB information not necessarily show the real.) -The owner had been terribly annoying during my stay. He was very arrogant to guest and sometimes dishonored me and the other guests. Among us felt even fear to "his selfish hospitality". -His attitudes over guests in general were apparently out of professional. Never worth paying even one pence a night. -NO RECOMMENDATION, in order not to spoil your better expectation to Otaru experience, over "the Morinoki's (unprofessional) hospitality".

Cost guesthouse, cute pets & friendly ownersMy boyfriend and I had a lovely stay in Morinoki in the twin room. The guesthouse is like a home away from home, incredibly comforting after backpacking for several months. There are beanbags in the cosy living room, a large collection of manga and DVDs as well. There is an outside terrace overlooking the town which is lovely to have some beers on and watch the sunset. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating, and the Japanese style breakfast here was the best value and quality we have had anywhere in Japan (390¥ per person for miso, omelette, salad, vegetables and tea). This was the perfect base to explore Otaru and the surrounding areas then come home and watch some movies, which my boyfriend and I had been wanting to do for a while on our trip. The hostel dog and cat, Hug and Momo, are adorable and very affectionate! We loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone wanting to check out a smaller town in Hokkaido! Go to Le Tao and have the no. 1 cheesecake, it will change your life. We will definitely be back to Morinoki :)

Stayed for a nightHonestly, I booked this because of the corgi. The dog's super cute and only shows up in the daytime, in diapers. We booked a private room for 2 and a bed in the shared room. The place is an organized clutter, filled to the brim with manga. The private room was comfortable, there was a space heater provided when I was there in the winter. There's also a shared living area to lounge around. This place was super quiet, it felt like everyone was walking on tiptoes, and as a result all conversations were held at a whisper. Just giving people an idea of what to expect. The owner wasn't particularly friendly or not friendly, but maybe because we were only there for one night. It was a simple walk from the train station, although much more difficult because there was a thick layer of ice on the roads and it was snowing. No mention of buying breakfast either...you might have to ask about it. Location was very convenient to the main spots in Otaru. Walking distance to restaurants, a local bar/grill spot, where they only spoke Japanese--that was fun. The dog-lover in me will book this again, but space was just average.

Excellent, comfortable, cozy hostelThis is a really cool and relaxed backpackers hostel. From the start it felt like home. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They also make a delicious breakfast. The atmosphere there is very cozy and there is even a well behaved cat and dog. Perfect location for exploring Otaru or Yoichi. One of the best places I've stayed in Japan.

Japanese home guesthouse with a corgiIll be honest, the fact that this place had a corgi is what sold me. I love corgis and this one was super cute and lovable. The corgi and cat were well behaved. I stayed for two nights and had a fine stay. Its not like a traditional hostel, this is more of a Japanese home guesthouse converted to one. I was in the female dorm which would be very snug if it was full, fortunately I was the only one there. Beds are basic but comfortable, small locker available for valuables. Breakfast, dinner are available at a cost but there is also a fridge for guests to use, which is a tad small but is available. Laundry comes with powder at Y200 to wash and Y200 to dry. The house is a bit cluttered but there are public spaces to sit and relax and has a nice view. WiFi is okay but available. Owner speaks some English and was polite but not overly talkative. The other staff member speaks less English but was much more engaging. Hostel also has two parking spots. You need a reservation and request if it is available when you stay. There is some street parking just in front of the hostel too. Overall very quiet area, decent location. I would consider staying again, depending on my needs for that stay.
