    Beautiful Old Home

Beautiful old home in a great location, with amazing gardens, a small museum and balcony, and views of the harbour. Very comfy beds and a nice breakfast. A short walk to the centre of Strahan. Hosts Rose & Terry were extremely friendly and helpful.

    Historic but haphazard

This is a Victorian house which has not really been modernised and is rather in need of some tlc. We arrived late afternoon only to be told by Terry that we had just missed the drinks, nibbles and historic tour of the house! Apparently we were 15 minutes after the scheduled start time so, although we appeared to be the only guests, everything had to run to schedule - so why tell us? Our room on the ground floor was spacious but the bed was incredibly soft and the bathroom was tragically basic. Breakfast next day was fairly average and we struggled to get enough coffee. This is fine for a one-night stopover and I suspect you'd struggle to find a better option in Strahan but it could be so much better.

    History with comfort

This is a lovely old home with plenty of history. It has been comfortably restored with period furnishings and modern conveniences. Our host Terry greeted us with a glass of wine in the bar to tell us about the house and its occupants who had important roles in the development of Strahan. There is a gallery of historic photos upstairs and access to the widow's walk with a view of the harbour. Breakfast was beautifully served and Terry was helpful in guiding us to places to eat in Strahan. We enjoyed our stay very much.

    Fawlty towers by another name

We booked for 3 nights at this grand federation mansion based on the information provided on their website. It may have been a mansion in its hay day but it is far from this today. My first thought on entering this bed and breakfast was this is Fawlty towers. It was run down, overgrown with weeds, in need of a good clean, had cobwebs and was dark , musty smelling and cold. The towels were threadbare and only replaced daily at our request. There were no extra toilet rolls available- fortunately we didnt need any more. The bins remained full despite asking that they be emptied. We were asked each morning if we would like our room refreshed. We asked for towels to be replaced and bins emptied. All for $275.00 per night. The owner met us at the door and took us into the bar area ( the old library) and filled in the paperwork for our stay. He was friendly enough and told us that unfortunately we had missed the house tour with complimentary drinks and nibbles which was held at 4:30 pm each day. At this I checked my watch and noted it was 4:33 pm. We were actually being checked in when the tour was happening. The thing was - the owner did the tour himself! He said we could do it another day and we did get to do it 2 days later. It was a very interesting tour and the owner is very knowledgeable about the history of Strahan and Ormiston house. We enjoyed this tour. This was the highlight of our stay. This bed and breakfast has so much unrealized potential. We only saw one other couple once at breakfast during our entire stay. The place was deserted yet the website showed that most of the rooms were fully booked. In fact we couldnt book a room with a bath initially and had to book the more expensive room - turns out when we arrived 3 other rooms were available so we got a room with a bath. We returned after dark to a darkened house - no external lights left on yet the owner knew we were not returning until after dark because of our evening cruise. There was no fridge in the room and a kettle was placed next to a TV that was the size of a small microwave. If we wanted milk that was provided in a small thermos. We were asked if we wanted tea and coffee bags. Breakfast was adequate but continental only. In summary this was overpriced, under serviced and a poorly maintained bed and breakfast.
