  At least the sheets were clean

  Not much positive about this hotel. Upon arrival, I checked the handle on the sliding terrace door and it fell off. I asked for a new room and it was a battle. The room/hotel in general was tired. Cracks in the walls, holes in the carpet and sheets, stains in the carpets etc. The only positive was that sheets and bed seemed to be in general clean... The service as others have mentioned was variable and especially since the local staff did not seem to be allowed to make any decision on their own. The price for the hotel kept changing as no staff could confirm whether the breakfast was included in the price or not. At checkout, I had some surprises on my bill, but as was in a hurry I had to pay for them including the breakfasts. The food was terrible. No choice. Fruit wasn't fresh and bread stale. For Asian food, I would suggest the Thai restaurant down the street. The pool was decent, but looks better on photos than in real life. The gym is dirty. The machines don't work and the weights are rusted. The only positive is the location, which is close to the conference centre and also the airport.

  Gotta Laugh or You'll Cry

  This hotel, owned by Chinese, has everything written in Chinese, down to the instructions on the air conditioner remote, so if you can't read Chinese and I don't, expect to be in for some frustration. The only thing really good about this hotel is that it is near the airport and is superior by far to the DUMP that Air Madagascar put me in (Flots Bleu, don't bother looking it up) due to its cancelling of its flight after 6 hours waiting for it to take off, a common occurrence I have since discovered. In the room, there is a written list of every item with a price tag opposite it down to the brush to clean the toilet -- a very subtle way (irony here) to say -- do not steal anything or you will be charged, even for the toilet cleaner. Gotta laugh. The front desk will not make a move without authority from the boss whoever that is -- when I left I needed a receipt from the restaurant, just anything to say I had been there and paid x amount for dinner -- no could not accommodate me, no how, must call the boss, or get it from the restaurant, yes, like after explaining the situation they would be able to find it, again, gotta laugh and anyway the restaurant wasn't open at the time. Like I said, better than Flots Bleu, Air Mad's hotel of choice, but then anything would be better.

  Hmmm... Chinese investment in Africa continues

  Built opposite the large offices of a Chinese company, the Orchid Hotel is a modern hotel handy for the airport. The rooms are large, but not well maintained. It took a couple of attempts to get a room that didnt have windows that rattled noisily in the breeze. Breakfast is served in a large restaurant at the back of the hotel, where there is also a good sized pool. The other reviews commenting on the service and Chinese writing are all perfectly true - I won't repeat it all... I'll add though that we were kept awake by the worst Karaoke singing EVER - in Chinese by a tone deaf couple of guys who could only shout. I had to go down to the basement in my PJs to tell them to shut up! Theres not much to do around the hotel, but if youre looking for a hotel near the airport, this one is fine. Not great, but it does the job for a night

  Good rooms and food.

  The reception area is run down but the rooms are good. Clean and spacious. Be sure air condition is working. I had to change room after many attempts to fix it. Check for hot water in the bathroom as that too was not working. Very close to the airport which is a big plus point. Nothing much around so cannot go out in the evening nor any supermarkets to shop. Service is okay. Wifi is terrible in the rooms. We had dinner twice and the food was super. Sufficient veg options- else chef is more than happy to cook for you. The restaurant is mostly empty so can have a meal peacefully.

  HORRIBLE!!

  After our flight was cancelled by Air Madagascar, the airline put us in this dump that claims to be a hotel. Dinner came and numerous NO SMOKING signs were put all around the restaurant, unfortunately some Chinese men who apparently own the hotel have rights above this. With the two small children we asked for a smoke free zone and the staff requested the Chinese men to smoke outside. A few minutes later one of them who became extremely intoxicated was screaming at the staff, making a complete fool of himself and abusing innocent staff members. He thereafter approached us as a family of five, several times in a threatening manner and wanted to clearly get into an altercation with us. Even going as far as to lay his hands on one of the small girls. He would even by reception come to us with a cigarette and smoke to show his superiority. The next morning we got out as quick as we could! A very terrifying experience and I advise anybody to stay away and if your flights are cancelled and the airline wishes to put you in the orchid hotel refuse, the IBiS is a much better alternative.
